      I have a few more newer videos from there and I still have a few more trails in the Porcupine Mountains that I haven't hiked on yet.

      Thanks! I hiked the 32 miles in 24 hours and that included the camping. It was a goal that I set for myself last winter. 22.8 miles on the first day was also a personal record. Being in my mid 40's makes it a little harder. 20 years ago this would have been easy.

      Thanks! I'm hoping to try a higher mileage hike in the same area next year. It's a good challenge, but I still need to know my limit for safety. I hiked about a 10 mile stretch without seeing anyone. Without a cell signal hiking alone you need to be a little extra careful.

      It was humid on that day, but the wind did help a little being a high mileage hike. Setting up the hammock in the dark with heavy rain was a challenge. Making it even harder was that I had to wait until after 10:00 AM to get my permit.

      Thanks Tim! That wind was crazy on top of the cliffs. The Escarpment Trail has beautiful views. The Warbonnet Blackbird is still my favorite. I just wanted to save weight with the Half-Wit hammock. It looks like our main trip will be out west this summer. We will be making reservations.

One of my friends is a Yooper, and has told me for years about hiking the "porky's" and also about backpacking on Isle Royale- both are on my bucket list along with section hiking the Superior Hiking Trail. Are there maps available to look at in order to plan a hike?? What about fishing in those streams?

    if you put the pad of a Band-Aid over your microphone it will eliminate the wind noise and your voice will still come through

    • @uptrail7169
      @uptrail7169  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Sony camera has a built in noise reduction. I was a little surprised on how much wind noise that came through in the video. Of coarse that was a very strong steady wind.

      I had band-aids in my pack. That's a good idea to try for next time. This was a faster than normal trip for making a video since I wanted to do 32 miles in 24 hours. The Escarpment Trail was the most challenging.

    How crowded is the park now. Can you still camp basically anywhere?

    • @uptrail7169
      @uptrail7169  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They campsites must be reserved online and you will pick up the permit at the visitors center. The weekends can be a little crowded. Sometimes all of the 63 campisites will be full, but not too often.

    Really enjoyed your vid! Would love to hike that part of Michigan (UP). Looks like you weren't to far from Isle Royale-- been on my bucket list for many years.. • @uptrail7169
      @uptrail7169  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I only saw campers at 2 sites out of about 40. Of coarse one site had to be the one that I wanted. The campsites are first come. Isle Royal is on my list. It's very expensive to take the boat ride. The weather can also be a factor on that island. We do have an island trip planned near Pictured Rocks in the future.

    • @uptrail7169
      @uptrail7169  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was a light rain before I found the campsite. Soon as I found this campsite it poured for over an hour when I setup the hammock and cooked food under the tarp. I didn't even think about the camera because I got soaked setting up the hammock. After hanging the bear bag I changed clothes and jumped into the hammock. I heard that it rained 3 inches in that time. That was the only time I had any rain during this 2 day trip.

    • @uptrail7169
      @uptrail7169  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That wasn't an easy 22.8 miles on day 1. All that I could think about was laying in the hammock after setting it up and eating my supper. I ate very little during the long hike. You have to purchase a camping permit at the visitors center and they open at 10:00 EST. That made it a late start for the long hike.

    Enjoyed your video! I need to go there some time. I'm thinking of possibly going in May or June - what's your recommendation?

    • @uptrail7169
      @uptrail7169  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The trails will most likely be a little wet in May or June and the bugs will be out. That really don't bother me that much. The Escarpment Trail and Big Carp River Trail are the best for views. The Lake Superior trail is nice, but you need dryer weather because the trails can be a mess. You have many options to make a loop. Mirror Lake is also very popular. The loop in this video is nice, but long. This is the map that I like using. www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&ved=0ahUKEwiHyLjI9rbSAhVpy1QKHcRcDdoQjRwIBw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mobilemaplets.com%2Fshowplace%2F1118&psig=AFQjCNF3vv8hSyR5DL2UQWx6epDjrCA5bQ&ust=1488513326849076

    How often did you encounter other campers/hikers on the trail? I'm going in August with some friends that live out of state and we're trying to find a very remote place

    • @uptrail7169
      @uptrail7169  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The weekends can be a little crowded in some areas around the Lake of the Clouds, Lake Superior side, and Mirror Lake. This was a weekend hike with storms in the forecast. I only saw about maybe 12 people the entire time. Remember to reserve your campsites online and then sign in at the park. This is something new they started for 2018
