During 70s, steams were operated up to Ooty and you will be surprised, they were pulling the train till Ooty and not pushing as they were coal fired and very efficient due to high quality coal. Due to Age and also high quality coal is not available, Golden Rock workshop built 5 oil fired steam locos, which are not that much powerful than coal fired ones. There were some plans to phase out these steamers totally and to deploy YDM 4s right from Mettuppalayam, but was failed as diesels were not able to pull the same in gradiant where cog wheel rails were present and required steam engine to push behind. Hence this plan was dropped and oil first steam engines were used to push the train from Mettupalayam to ooty and will pull in the return direction...

But please note that YDM4 is very powerful loco indeed.. this is the loco that was attached to Vaigai super fast in those days to run at more than 100kmph!!! Hence I don't think, for sure that little steam has more power than the slim super fast diesel!! For all heritage trains, they always maintain steam at the start for the sake of maintaining that glorious olden heritage era and after sometime a diesel-mostly or electric-rarely is taken over.. the orient express heritage train also starts with twin steam engines up to a 2 hours initial run and then completely taken by single YDM4 loco... Power wise, a YDM4 loco has 1200hp sufficient enough to pull 11 meter guage coaches @ 100kmph which are much much heavier than this just 4 toy train coaches.. so I really don't believe this small steam is more powerful than a 1200hp YDM4 diesel loco!!
Tha.nk you bro. I too know that YDM 4 is more powerful than X class, but it works only in plains and NMR has steep gradients and also has 3rd rail with cog wheel mechanism in which it cannot perform. X class is specially designed to work on this steep gradients..

Nice vlog.. nearly 15 years before in my age 12, I have travelled in this train. After that I have travelled with you through this vlog. Amazing arrangements to passengers and train is tourist friendly. I have travelled in this train at a fair of Rs. 11, for child below 12 from ooty to metupalayam before 15 yrs at General compartment. At that period there was one general compartment and two reserved compartments I think. You have covered wonderful and amazing. You have showed me some wonderful memories of my past. NMR has lot of scope for development on the lines of Shimla or Darjeeling railways. There are lots of trains between Kalka and Shimla compared to the just on between Metupalayam and Ooty. I had traveled in one train called Shivalik Deluxe which is in Rajdhani class. Hope Railways take steps to improve the train connectivity and tourism.

Travelling through the woods of Ooty by train is my long period dream and passion. Though I am a Coimbatorian, that remained dream only. But today (8.5.2022) I have booked the tickets for our family after seeing this vlog. Tickets are available for August and September months only. My travel will be on 3.9.2022. Toy train. Runs in Dry cells. Used to play by children's. Or. Runs in park, for children. Ooty train is a narrow gauge train, with external combustion engine. Earlier, it used coal, now with Diesel. Has Rack & Pinion Mechanism. Ooty has toy train near Lake.
In Gujarati still there are narrow Gauge trains. Simla is also a narrow gauge train.
