I have to agree with you about your "growth" from not liking them to liking them. I remember buying this album in the late 80's and thinking, "wow, there's some wasted money..." Then I played it again, and again, and again... Appreciation for this band snuck up on me.
Lydon’s lyrics and the wall of guitar are why the Pistols piss (that word again 😂) all over the rest (yes including The Clash, although their first album is sublime)
This album, although a classic punk album is actually a gem of a ROCK album......Steve Jones is a criminaly underrated guitarist.....his solo album Fire and Gasoline is a classic. Love this album.
Classic album and every track is an absolute banger. I have a rare 12” picture disc of the album that I picked up in the late 70s as a teenager and is still sitting in my record collection under the stairs. The mini series ‘Pistol’ is well worth a watch and gives a good background to what was happening at the time this was recorded. Punk was a refreshing change to years of boring prog rock. Don’t forget they took a pink Floyd t shirt and punked it up by tearing rips into it and scrawling ‘I hate’ above pink Floyd. Good times.
You’ve gotta do a whole album review!! It’s one of the most influential albums of all time, so many of the best bands from the 80’s and 90’s were majorly influenced by it. It was one of Kurt Cobain’s favourite albums and was part of the reason he named Nirvana’s second album Nevermind 🤘🏻
I actually loved that one. I like punk when it's not taking it self too seriously, even if it's being nihilistic. But the entire delivery of that one was pitch perfect. And thanks for looking up that idiom. I also learned something new today!
Love this album, God Save The Queen is still one of my favourite songs. if you want to get into punk a bit more try the album Killing Joke by Killing Joke, i know its more industrial post punk, but they started in 1978 out of the punk scene. Try Requiem, which is a classic, and The Wait, which was covered by Metallica.
I totally agree with you about needing time for this to grow on you, even tho I already enjoyed a decent amount of punk before my first listen to this classic (I was also late to this party like you haha). I remember hearing this whole album for the first time and there were a few tracks that stood out, but overall I didn’t know if I would come back. After a break and listening to it many times over.. most of the songs from it really grew on me!! Glad you’re in the same boat as me and I hope you continue to listen through this album!!
Wall-lah. Ironically against his stage persona John Lyndon was a very dedicated husband and took care of his wife during her battle with Alzheimer’s. He’s a great human being in my book for that and calling out pedos in Great Britain
The first wave of punk was awesome... I can listen to the Ramones and Sex Pistols all day long.. for a great Ramones song, try Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment, from their second album... or listen to the whole second album, called Leave Home...it's my personal favourite Ramones album
This is my take on what Punk meant to me - I was 16 when Punk 'Broke' and it was at last!!! there is a sound I want to listen to and the message was - The world is fucked up and wrong and we want to change things and put it right.
Took me a few songs to fall in love with the Pistols also. Can’t say all the songs are as good as this one, but several strong songs yet for you to hear. ‘Problems’ comes to mind.
The Pistols are what first got me into punk but I don't listen to them that often these days - it might be different if they had more than one studio album. I mostly listen to the anarcho punk bands such as Conflict, Crass, and the Subhumans as well as other punk bands such as the Anti Nowhere League, Angelic Upstarts, Exploited, GBH, The Lurkers, SLF, UK Subs... Although since the passing of Shane MacGowan I've been listening to a lot of the Pogues and the Popes.
I have so much fun listening to the Pistols. I always find myself smiling and laughing, in spite of their angry messaging. Lydon’s snide delivery is supreme theatre.
Old Usenet had a saying for discussions that had run their course: "The wheel's still turning, but the hamster is dead." (Not applicable here. Just remembered because you used a hamster metaphor.) Taking the piss is more recent than "Taking the Micky out of someone", I think? Or "the Micky" was just an old Bowdlerization, maybe. What does it mean to take the micky out of someone? (Literally - origins again.) It's probably ephemeral or already gone, so I suppose it doesn't matter any more. Could be the same applies to piss-taking. (I'm a bit skeptical about the involved morning wood story. Sounds too complicated to me. I get the feeling that might just be someone who did things like the ancient Greeks in such matters - find some meaning to explain a meaning, and if you can't, create it.)
I knew the phrase but not its origin. From what I gather, the Wiki page was saying that was a possible origin but it was speculative, so may not be true. I like the track, although I find the Pistols a one dimensional band: once you've heard a couple of their songs you don't hear much new in the rest. The lyrics describe an unpleasant individual, and one assumes Lydon is expressing his disgust at such people. It does remind me, though, that there was quite a lot of violence associated with the original punk movement. Those were more violent times in the UK, e.g. with football hooliganism, and there was the backdrop of the troubles in Northern Ireland, love and peace had indeed receded into the past.
hearing this now confirms my suspicions that the singles were fab and the b sides, this being one in my imagination , were ok. Imagine Aerosmith recording 9 versions of Toys in the Attic for that LP and you can sense my slight disappointment with this and my appreciation of truly great 70s wok wecordz....Aerosmith ROCKS being the greatest ever perhaps!
Jonesy's guitar tone is beautiful

No urination over The Stranglers for my money!

NMTB Was the gamechanger album which inspired thousands but was never equalled.

This production just ripped through the speakers , the arrangement is spot on . Best Rock album of all time for me
Love how your reactions are pure and insightful. You really do your research! Thanks!
Appreciate it Jill! Ty for watching

Almost all the song on the album almost one best album ever prefect album and first take
OK Justin talks Punk describing Hamsters on a wheel. Too good!
Mate, I’m glad you’re appreciating this album now, it’s a blast 👍
Thanks Jodie :) Took me some time, but I'm getting it now
Hi Steve, taking the piss basically means taking the mickey. Great reaction from a monumental album
Love this album, God Save The Queen is still one of my favourite songs.

Another great tune on an album full of them.

The best track on the album, along with 'Submission'. Strange choices perhaps, but twas always the case!
i agree! Submission is my favorite track from the album. However Bodies is good too
@@junehoornweg18 Most definitely.
i was a young teenager when this band was playing venues hahahahaha.

Oh, how could you have left Peni & Flux etc. off your list?????
@@garylovell6017 let's just say that it was a rudimentary error. 😉
@@GrumpyOldGit-zk1kw Fucking excellent man!🤣
Just like you,I have often wondered what that expression meant.I just thought it was silly, but now that I’ve heard it’s origin,it makes sense to me.
The narcissists anthem. Jonny must have been a prophet

I allways like this track ❤
I'm English and I didn't know the origins of extracting the urine. Consider me schooled, JP!😄
Glad I could be of service :)
Got detention at school for having this album in a clear plastic bag ! Bloody Marvellous all the way through !
I believe he wrote this song about their despised former manager, Malcolm McLaren

Welcom to the rock n roll hall of fame. Where gods live and mear mortals knock all day but cant get in .
Believe it or not, Bananarama does a cover.
Piss proud .. I already knew that 🙃
It's ok. Certainly brings back memories, but not necessarily something I'd play today.

Taking the piss? Ridiculing, mocking.
