The scene where Katara grabs Aang is one of my favorite scenes in the entire show. It's just a beautiful moment between the two characters. The music, the animation, and the mood was just perfect. It also really shows how Katara is Aang's anchor, something that ties him to reality. It's such a great moment.

I think I would add that there is significant evidence in both ATLA and LOK that an Avatar's "Animal Guide" as, Aang calls them in S1E7 _[that's "Winter Solstice part 1, by the way]_ also ties an Avatar to reality, as well as to the Avatar Spirit inside him or her, I think. It's almost like the two are part of each other. It was that way for Roku and Fang, it's that way for Aang and Appa, and it will be that way for Korra and Naga. Now that Appa is gone, Katara is the only anchor Aang has left.

Does anyone else notice tophs face? This is her first time feeling/hearing Aang in the Avatar state. She has a look of shock & fear. She hears the earth running beneath her and the wind blow. Sokka sold that "Just get out of here! RUN!" line. All the Avatar voices speaking as one. It was epic. I say he cares about Appa so much that, Aang himself felt threatened. He, appa, and momo are the last of their kind. And oF course.. katara being the MVP! Keeping everyone in line and when the look Aang gave her when she grabbed his arm was bone chilling. So much pain and anger. And katara looks back with pain and understanding. She out of all people know how it is like to have someone you absolutely love be taken from you. I love this show and it's attention to detail!!!!!
Anthony Dimas I rewatched tophs face and I almost shed a tear. She was in complete shock and probably very scared and helpless. Already in the desert where she can't see (whereas her whole life she could adapt to vibrations) and now hearing aangs avatar voices and the wind circling. AAAH I LOVE AVATAR
This is the first episode where you see how SCARY Aang can be when he's pissed, even when he's not in the avatar state. That look on his face when he kills the wasp thing was pure hatred and rage. Big change from the goofy, happy kid. Also, the kid who voices Aang does a great job this episode. Hard to believe he's only 12 but is on par with the other voice actors who are mostly adults.

There are actually tears streaming down Katara's face while she holds Aang at the end. It's really, really hard to tell from the video and from other uploads of lower quality on the web but is visible on the DVDs. I just think that it's worth noting that as much as Aang was hurting this entire episode Katara was hurting just as much. It's simple: when Aang isn't happy, Katara isn't happy. I love this show.

I agree that was beautiful... But to me the amazing part of that scene was how Aang was crying in the Avatar state...... Which means all previous Avatars were crying with him as he began to realize he might never see Appa again..... All his past lives cried with him and that was majestic
Man.... that ending always gets me. The music and the no-dialogue understanding from Katara. And the fact that Appa is not just a pet, he's his best friend, and the only thing left to remind him of his past. I mean you could say momo, but he's only a reminder of the Airbnders, not the life he had before the iceberg. And that's all gone, and Appa's all that's left.
I love Katara so much in this episode. So far from what we've seen, she can sometimes come off as some goody two-shoes and sort of a bossy individual, but she truly cares for the people she love and I love that in this hard situation they were placed in, she was able to tough it out and stay strong for everyone's sake. Man, the character development for every single character on this show is fantastic. And I can't wait until you guys get to S3 with a certain Katara episode. 2 of them actually, if you know what I mean
This episode converted me to Kataangism. The fact that Katara is willing to risk her own life in a reckless and dangerous attempt to snap Aang out of the Avatar State shows how much she loves him, and the fact that it actually works shows how powerful and unyielding Aang's love for her is. I'm emo.
I didn't really ship anything...I was just going with the flow and was pretty ambivalent towards all the potential ships. I thought the idea of Kataang was pretty sweet but up until this scene I never put much thought into it.
Pretty much everyone on the team has their purpose Katara: Holds the team together. She's basically the mother than people can come to and will always be there Sokka: Believe it or not he's the leader. He's the cynical one that isn't easily manipulated and also seems to be the only one that stays constantly focused on the mission. He's the driving force, the protector and the man with a plan Aang: With Aang its more that its his destiny but he's also the peacekeeper. While Katara is the one people can turn to and rely on. Aang is the one who resolves conflict and protects the team from themselves. He's also the moral center I'd say. Toph: Let's be honest Toph is the powerhouse of the team. She's the one who does the dirty work. Basically she's the backbone of the team that stops anyone fucking with them.
The reason why Aang went into the avatar state was because Appa, not only being his oldest, and best friend, also represents the last vestige of his heritage. Therefore it is an attack on Aang himself.
Man, I felt bad for Aang in this episode. Those "circle birds" are actually called buzzard wasps :) also, Aang didn't just hurt the buzzard wasp, if you look closely, you can see that it gets cut in half, so Aang actually killed it.
When Aang speaks in the Avatar State it gives me chills every time. On another note, yep. Appa is more than just a pet to Aang. He's more like a brother to him. At the end of the day Appa is also the last Airbender just like Aang.
Loyda Perez Appa is 100% Aang‘ super. But in the way you grow up with a dog or cat. I think Momo is more like Katara and Sokka’s. But Appa KNOWS Aang. He feels him. Understands him. Kids usually only get that once in their life.
This is the first time Toph sees "twinkle toes" go HAM. The shocked expression on her face when he goes full avatar around her for the first time really hits you. They didn't miss a single detail in this show. I love it

Like in the other episodes, Aang is made up to be this peaceful, fun-loving kid who was raised by nomads to respect all living things. His entire s3 issue was whether or not to kill ozai when the time came. In the swamp you might remember him telling Sokka to not so carelessly kill off the plants there. He's even a vegetarian. So, this is the one time in the whole series you see him kill something, and out of a malicious way, too. It's kinda scary if you think about it. Like that shot at 11:24 always gives me chills because it's like looking at what Aang could be like had he allowed his grief and emotion to overpower him.
Also, if you watch a later episode, Aang says he's even a vegetarian- that the monks taught him that all life is sacred. Aang killing any creature is the equivalent to most people actually killing another person because in his mind they are equal.
Katara is Aang's lullaby! Real talk though this episode shows that Katara is the emotional center of the Gaang. And she steps the hell up and leads when she has to.
This is sush a good epsiode because of dark aang and the ending to it. It is not a filler. You see how aang reacts when appa is not there! His best friend and the only thing to remind him of the time when other airbenders existed. Aang cried at the end and I thought that that was one of my favorite moments of the series. You see the pain he has to go through and everything that he has gone through up until this point :/

Filler doesn't have to do with if the episode is good or not idiot. If all that happened was seeing how aang reacts to missing appa and the story didn't progress it WOULD be filler. It's not filler because group avatar is now headed towards appa at ba sing se and has a way out the dessert. We also learned about the white lotus and now Zuko and Iroh are headed there as well. So annoying you're commenting on if it's filler when you don't even know what it means...
Even though it's sad, the part where Katara grabs Aang is one of my favorites. It's touching to just see the unique bond that Aang and Katara have, she's the only one that can bring him out of the Avatar state, which is really impressive considering Aang has such difficulty controlling it himself. She gives him the strength to resist acting on his anger and pain. And I think that is such a beautiful thing.
The thing about Appa is that he's Aang's Animal Guide. Not only that but he's one of the last air bison in existence -he's an extension of the air nomads, the monks and Aang's life. He's one of the last living pieces that Aang can't get back if something happens to him -it's like losing a part of his home all over again. Appa is more than just a pet and you can feel the raw anger and pain in his voice -the pure devastation and rage when all the Avatars voices kicked in is one of the more powerful moments of the show for me.
The only other time Aang went avatar state just from anger is when he found out his people were wiped out :( it's supposed to be a defense mechanism but I guess it's for emotional defense too
It's good you guys only uploaded 1 last week because The Library and The Desert should really be watched/shown together. When they premiered on TV they were advertised as a special called "The Fury of Aang" I make videos about Avatar, if anyone is interested.
As a child, the Sokka-being-High moments were what made this episode bearable. It made my sister and I forget that these characters were in real, life-threatening danger (danger that can’t be fought with bending etc.). That, and the loss of Appa, made this a really dark episode that I appreciated later.

Man one of my favorite episodes! So many emotions and feels! Also, this episode shows me, all these years later, the bond Aang and Katara have because she is only one who can bring him out of the Avatar State!
Appa is Aang's avatar spirit animal-guide, similar to Roku and his dragon; like Nahid said they are apart of each other. Even more so he is all Aang has left of his life one-hundred years ago so yeah, the fact that he was taken like that has pulled all of Aang's triggers lol.
Reactors also always forget that the Avatar state is also triggered by extreme emotion and not just danger. He went into the avatar state when he discovered the fire nation killed Gyatso.
One of my favorite episodes. Aang's anger is just so focused, he actually controlled the Avatar State for just a moment when he demanded to know where Appa is. He just desperately wants his friend back so much and is scared that he might be lost forever. And his reaction is like a kid throwing a tantrum, but it doesn't feel annoying or bratty. It just... it's sad. I get emotional every single time I watch this episode.
My favorite thing about this is how its all up to Katara. Aang is angry, depressed and gave up. Toph can’t see or bend well enough, and Sokkas drunk. It would have been easy to give up too but she didn’t. She kept going and kept them together.
You gotta understand, Aang is acting like this for a reason. Even before he was frozen, Aang and Appa had what you might call a soul bond. Their connection was already very deep. After he discovered his people were killed, the ONLY two things aside from himself that he has left of his home are Appa and Momo.
Lets all take a moment to admire the animation and voice acting when Aang went into the avatar state. As powerful as Toph is you could tell she was absolutely terrified of Aang that being the first time she's ever been present during the destruction of what avatar state can do. Not only that but the voice actor for Sokka in this scene was phenomenal! Just the sheer tone in his voice telling everyone, even the sandbenders to run! Amazing. Terrifying and beautiful!
This is also an interesting character moment for toph, she didn’t even know the avatar state was a thing and she kind of triggered it, brought on something so powerful beyond her understanding
Favourite part of this episode is the pure shock on Toph's face when Aang goes into the Avatar state since it's the first time she's experienced it. She cant see shit, but even she knows he's off the deep end.
I love Katara's facial expression when Aang goes into the avatar state. She isn't afraid of him and she doesn't stand by and let him destroy everything in his anger. She knows he'd never hurt hurt so she just walks up to him and touches him. She looks at him empathetically as a friend that is sad to see her friend in pain. She knows this isn't him and she brings it the best in him simply by believing in him. It's so sweet!
Something I realized recently when rewatching the show, after watching Korra: every Avatar since the first one has had an animal guide, so when the past lives are speaking through him it’s *every single Avatar* feeling his pain and rage, feeling as though they lost their own guide. It’s so fucking intimidating, and so heartbreaking, hearing them all speak together.
If you notice at the end, and it’s hard with TH-cam compression, Katara is actually crying too. To me it was both how Katara was in pain because of how Aang was in pain, and maybe a little bit of her own self pain. This entire episode, she was doing her best to keep the team together and alive through sheer will: keeping Aang’s temper in check, helping Toph walk through the desert, keeping Sokka and Momo safe while they were super high from cactus juice. This episode really showed her strength of character. And then she kinda failed at one of those things in the end: Aang lost control, even briefly, due to the pain of losing Apa. She had tried to protect everyone during this, and it must have really taken a toll on her. So I believe those tears were both for Aang’s pain, and for her own. It’s hard to be a leader. I felt that pain, maybe even more than Aang’s.
The bond between an Avatar and their animal guide is the strongest thing ever. They are literally connected to one another as they are meant to be lifetime companions. So for Aang to face the possibility of losing that puts him through an extremely emotional experience. He probably wouldn't even know what to do without Appa. I think these strong connections are shown for what they fully are when a sweet character like Aang changes completely because he lost that part of himself. Avatars and their animal guides are tied for life. ❤️ And you'll see that connection again through another Avatar and their animal friend in the future. ;)
WOW I just now noticed that this was setting up Katara being the thing that grounds and to the world and “holding him back” from reaching the Avatar state enlightenment. But also showing how that’s a good thing. God damn this show is amazing
I think Toph recognizing voices is less a bending power and more about being blind. Think about it, if you can't see, the voice is the only way to recognize people. The voice is to blind people what a face is to others.
Kataang is the only relationship in the whole Avatar franchise that actually worked out. They have both been through so much they deserve each other 😭😭🥰

Someone else posted this before I ever had the thought, but they mentioned how Toph had memorized voices because her senses were heightened for being blind. Imagine her hearing Aang's voice and knowing it, but then suddenly hearing his voice combined with the thousands of past avatars? The shock on her face makes sense. Without that ability to see, suddenly hearing her friend accompanied by thousands of previous masters would terrify anyone. I honestly wish I could remember who commented it, but it definitely wasn't me who first thought of it.
"THIS IS WHERE I CRY OVER THE DEATH OF MY FAVORITE CHARACTER" I need like a thousand of those cushions honestly, and when I noticed what the cushion said, it made me smile for just a second, and then I got the intense need for ten of those at least, immediately after. :'( And then I watched this video, and cried (again) over that emotionally freaking powerful scene that ended the episode, with Aang and Katara.

I just think that it's worth noting that as much as Aang was hurting this entire episode Katara was hurting just as much. It's simple: when Aang isn't happy, Katara isn't happy. I love this show.

Man.... that ending always gets me. The music and the no-dialogue understanding from Katara. And the fact that Appa is not just a pet, he's his best friend, and the only thing left to remind him of his past. I mean you could say momo, but he's only a reminder of the Airbnders, not the life he had before the iceberg. And that's all gone, and Appa's all that's left.

I love Katara so much in this episode. So far from what we've seen, she can sometimes come off as some goody two-shoes and sort of a bossy individual, but she truly cares for the people she love and I love that in this hard situation they were placed in, she was able to tough it out and stay strong for everyone's sake.
Man, the character development for every single character on this show is fantastic. And I can't wait until you guys get to S3 with a certain Katara episode. 2 of them actually, if you know what I mean

This episode converted me to Kataangism. The fact that Katara is willing to risk her own life in a reckless and dangerous attempt to snap Aang out of the Avatar State shows how much she loves him, and the fact that it actually works shows how powerful and unyielding Aang's love for her is. I'm emo.

I didn't really ship anything...I was just going with the flow and was pretty ambivalent towards all the potential ships. I thought the idea of Kataang was pretty sweet but up until this scene I never put much thought into it.

Katara: Holds the team together. She's basically the mother than people can come to and will always be there
Sokka: Believe it or not he's the leader. He's the cynical one that isn't easily manipulated and also seems to be the only one that stays constantly focused on the mission. He's the driving force, the protector and the man with a plan
Aang: With Aang its more that its his destiny but he's also the peacekeeper. While Katara is the one people can turn to and rely on. Aang is the one who resolves conflict and protects the team from themselves. He's also the moral center I'd say.
Toph: Let's be honest Toph is the powerhouse of the team. She's the one who does the dirty work. Basically she's the backbone of the team that stops anyone fucking with them.
The reason why Aang went into the avatar state was because Appa, not only being his oldest, and best friend, also represents the last vestige of his heritage. Therefore it is an attack on Aang himself.
Man, I felt bad for Aang in this episode. Those "circle birds" are actually called buzzard wasps :) also, Aang didn't just hurt the buzzard wasp, if you look closely, you can see that it gets cut in half, so Aang actually killed it.

When Aang speaks in the Avatar State it gives me chills every time. On another note, yep. Appa is more than just a pet to Aang. He's more like a brother to him. At the end of the day Appa is also the last Airbender just like Aang.
Loyda Perez Appa is 100% Aang‘ super. But in the way you grow up with a dog or cat. I think Momo is more like Katara and Sokka’s. But Appa KNOWS Aang. He feels him. Understands him. Kids usually only get that once in their life.

This is the first time Toph sees "twinkle toes" go HAM. The shocked expression on her face when he goes full avatar around her for the first time really hits you. They didn't miss a single detail in this show. I love it

I'm glad you noticed that! Like in the other episodes, Aang is made up to be this peaceful, fun-loving kid who was raised by nomads to respect all living things. His entire s3 issue was whether or not to kill ozai when the time came. In the swamp you might remember him telling Sokka to not so carelessly kill off the plants there. He's even a vegetarian. So, this is the one time in the whole series you see him kill something, and out of a malicious way, too. It's kinda scary if you think about it. Like that shot at 11:24 always gives me chills because it's like looking at what Aang could be like had he allowed his grief and emotion to overpower him.
Also, if you watch a later episode, Aang says he's even a vegetarian- that the monks taught him that all life is sacred. Aang killing any creature is the equivalent to most people actually killing another person because in his mind they are equal.
Aang and Katara both have episodes dedicated to showcase their moral dualism, how pain and rage can twist them out of character. So powerful
Katara is Aang's lullaby! Real talk though this episode shows that Katara is the emotional center of the Gaang. And she steps the hell up and leads when she has to.

This is sush a good epsiode because of dark aang and the ending to it. It is not a filler. You see how aang reacts when appa is not there! His best friend and the only thing to remind him of the time when other airbenders existed. Aang cried at the end and I thought that that was one of my favorite moments of the series. You see the pain he has to go through and everything that he has gone through up until this point :/

Filler doesn't have to do with if the episode is good or not idiot. If all that happened was seeing how aang reacts to missing appa and the story didn't progress it WOULD be filler. It's not filler because group avatar is now headed towards appa at ba sing se and has a way out the dessert. We also learned about the white lotus and now Zuko and Iroh are headed there as well. So annoying you're commenting on if it's filler when you don't even know what it means...

Even though it's sad, the part where Katara grabs Aang is one of my favorites. It's touching to just see the unique bond that Aang and Katara have, she's the only one that can bring him out of the Avatar state, which is really impressive considering Aang has such difficulty controlling it himself. She gives him the strength to resist acting on his anger and pain. And I think that is such a beautiful thing.
The thing about Appa is that he's Aang's Animal Guide. Not only that but he's one of the last air bison in existence -he's an extension of the air nomads, the monks and Aang's life. He's one of the last living pieces that Aang can't get back if something happens to him -it's like losing a part of his home all over again. Appa is more than just a pet and you can feel the raw anger and pain in his voice -the pure devastation and rage when all the Avatars voices kicked in is one of the more powerful moments of the show for me.

As a child, the Sokka-being-High moments were what made this episode bearable. It made my sister and I forget that these characters were in real, life-threatening danger (danger that can’t be fought with bending etc.). That, and the loss of Appa, made this a really dark episode that I appreciated later.

Appa is Aang's avatar spirit animal-guide, similar to Roku and his dragon; like Nahid said they are apart of each other. Even more so he is all Aang has left of his life one-hundred years ago so yeah, the fact that he was taken like that has pulled all of Aang's triggers lol.

One of my favorite episodes. Aang's anger is just so focused, he actually controlled the Avatar State for just a moment when he demanded to know where Appa is.
He just desperately wants his friend back so much and is scared that he might be lost forever. And his reaction is like a kid throwing a tantrum, but it doesn't feel annoying or bratty. It just... it's sad. I get emotional every single time I watch this episode.

My favorite thing about this is how its all up to Katara. Aang is angry, depressed and gave up. Toph can’t see or bend well enough, and Sokkas drunk.
It would have been easy to give up too but she didn’t. She kept going and kept them together.

You gotta understand, Aang is acting like this for a reason. Even before he was frozen, Aang and Appa had what you might call a soul bond. Their connection was already very deep. After he discovered his people were killed, the ONLY two things aside from himself that he has left of his home are Appa and Momo.

Lets all take a moment to admire the animation and voice acting when Aang went into the avatar state. As powerful as Toph is you could tell she was absolutely terrified of Aang that being the first time she's ever been present during the destruction of what avatar state can do. Not only that but the voice actor for Sokka in this scene was phenomenal! Just the sheer tone in his voice telling everyone, even the sandbenders to run! Amazing. Terrifying and beautiful!
This is also an interesting character moment for toph, she didn’t even know the avatar state was a thing and she kind of triggered it, brought on something so powerful beyond her understanding
Poor Toph. She looks so scared when Aang pulls out the avatar state. She hasn’t seen that before!

Favourite part of this episode is the pure shock on Toph's face when Aang goes into the Avatar state since it's the first time she's experienced it. She cant see shit, but even she knows he's off the deep end.
I love Katara's facial expression when Aang goes into the avatar state. She isn't afraid of him and she doesn't stand by and let him destroy everything in his anger. She knows he'd never hurt hurt so she just walks up to him and touches him. She looks at him empathetically as a friend that is sad to see her friend in pain. She knows this isn't him and she brings it the best in him simply by believing in him. It's so sweet!
I love the part where Aang goes into the Avatar State. Mostly because Katara just looks 100000% DONE
The tear jerking level of emotion here and later will just make the eventual reunion all the more joyful I think. :-)

Something I realized recently when rewatching the show, after watching Korra: every Avatar since the first one has had an animal guide, so when the past lives are speaking through him it’s *every single Avatar* feeling his pain and rage, feeling as though they lost their own guide. It’s so fucking intimidating, and so heartbreaking, hearing them all speak together.
If you notice at the end, and it’s hard with TH-cam compression, Katara is actually crying too. To me it was both how Katara was in pain because of how Aang was in pain, and maybe a little bit of her own self pain. This entire episode, she was doing her best to keep the team together and alive through sheer will: keeping Aang’s temper in check, helping Toph walk through the desert, keeping Sokka and Momo safe while they were super high from cactus juice. This episode really showed her strength of character.
And then she kinda failed at one of those things in the end: Aang lost control, even briefly, due to the pain of losing Apa. She had tried to protect everyone during this, and it must have really taken a toll on her. So I believe those tears were both for Aang’s pain, and for her own. It’s hard to be a leader. I felt that pain, maybe even more than Aang’s.
The bond between an Avatar and their animal guide is the strongest thing ever. They are literally connected to one another as they are meant to be lifetime companions. So for Aang to face the possibility of losing that puts him through an extremely emotional experience. He probably wouldn't even know what to do without Appa. I think these strong connections are shown for what they fully are when a sweet character like Aang changes completely because he lost that part of himself. Avatars and their animal guides are tied for life. ❤️
And you'll see that connection again through another Avatar and their animal friend in the future. ;)
WOW I just now noticed that this was setting up Katara being the thing that grounds and to the world and “holding him back” from reaching the Avatar state enlightenment. But also showing how that’s a good thing. God damn this show is amazing

I think Toph recognizing voices is less a bending power and more about being blind. Think about it, if you can't see, the voice is the only way to recognize people. The voice is to blind people what a face is to others.

Someone else posted this before I ever had the thought, but they mentioned how Toph had memorized voices because her senses were heightened for being blind. Imagine her hearing Aang's voice and knowing it, but then suddenly hearing his voice combined with the thousands of past avatars? The shock on her face makes sense. Without that ability to see, suddenly hearing her friend accompanied by thousands of previous masters would terrify anyone.
I honestly wish I could remember who commented it, but it definitely wasn't me who first thought of it.
