Also a little thing I noticed and loved was the fact that despite lashing out at Toph earlier, Aang instantly believed her when she pointed out that it was Ghashiun who stole Appa. Despite initially blaming her and being angry, Aang still trusts Toph without hesitation.
XNorthEast actually yea, every avatars animal is there spirit animal. They are connected, usually if the avatar dies their spirit animal dies with them cause they are so connected. And honestly since here aang can’t control his avatar state it takes previous avatars to make him power up in that state along with rava cause she can just activate it herself as well. It also put a lot more to the table too since aang and appa are both the last of their kind so he was in a defensive situation.
Another thing is, this is the first time toph has been around when aang triggered it. With her having more sensitive hearing and never forgeting a voice makes it so chilling. Her friend, a kid her age, suddenly speaking with countless voices at once. Shes frozen in place so sokka has to get her moving(scene was edited out). Its so subtle and forgettable but i love it..
Plus, Appa is the ONLY one besides Momo who’s from his past. They are both over a 100 years old. He first lost all of his people & imagine then losing your best friend 🥺
@JACOB DARKO yeah Momo isn't from 100 years ago. He's not from the past. He's just a rare exinct creature that managed to still be born despite his species pretty much being extinct at this point.
@ShinobiPrince I highly doubt that 12 year olds would really understand muzzles being put on an animal that they have been friendly with for years. So taking it personally was justified in his perspective and he's still 12 years old, not much of a difference from 9 years old.
Sokka is the oldest at 15, Katara is 14, Aang and Toph are 12. These types of episodes where a certain character gets upset, you have to understand where they are coming from. Aang's anger is justified because he and Appa have been together since a very young age. "A sky bison is a friend for life." You'll get to understand the connection they have in upcoming episodes.
This is one of my favorites, it really develops the character of the main cast by putting them in a dire situation. We see Toph's weakness, Aang's anger, Sokka's recklessness and Katara's deep care for them. Katara is really the heart of the group, and so brave, she is able to stand to a monstrous being with the voice of a legion, and fearlessly holds him close.
Aang was understandably angry. Your whole culture was whipped out by genocidal maniac and the only thing that connects you to your culture is your best friend. Aang has the burden of being 100 years too late and some people hate u for that. Loosing appa trigger those emotions and hit aang like a ton of bricks.
Ok something you missed about Aang’s temperament this episode. Aang feels so under attack because Appa is the last remaining link Aang has to the era before he was frozen. And Aang is super connected to this animal where they can practically feel each other’s feelings as his own. To have Appa stolen and maybe even taken for parts, removes the last living creature he knows of from that era. If you were that close to your pet, you’d do the same. That hug at the end had me in tears too. And I’ve seen this show more than 10 times by now. Also Sokka getting high off of cactus juice and cave sludge like a dipshit is hilarious. But comic relief is hardly Sokka’s only purpose. (Plus Momo swirling around like crazy until he crash lands is my favorite Momo moment. And there’s some pretty good contenders.)
That ending is my second favorite moment in the entire show. Also, you have to love Tophs face as it was her first time hearing the avatar voice and she is terrified.
I feel like you guys are a little harsh towards Aang, he’s just a kid. He’s already lost his entire tribe and the fact that Appa was stolen from him is really sad. He’s only 12 so it’s very understandable that he’s so upset
Yeah, that’s the thing about this show. You get so invested in the characters that you forget that they’re children. They make mistakes, they’re immature, they say stupid stuff.
@@uhohmykokoro1616 So true. But it's not even just that they're children, though I do wish people would stop disregarding that. Adults who suffer loss and trauma say and do stupid things too. Aang should not be treating his friends badly but these are very real reactions, and mocking or downplaying it is disrespecting the very real effect that trauma can have on a person
Aang in that scene where he just takes out the vulture bee gives me chills. This is a kid we've known to be a this goofy little guy, a pacifist, a kid raised by monks, who never uses offensive fighting strategies unless he absolutely has to, a kid who is even a vegetarian because that is how sacred he believes life to be! But then in that scene with the vulture bee, he kills the bee even though Momo was already saved and there was no need for him to. And that cut to how dark his expression is afterwards is just so chilling, because you see how much losing Appa has affected him. Appa's the last living connection he has to his past life a hundred years ago, I can't imagine how much it must be hurting him to lose that last connection. And it's so hard as an audience to see someone who is so characteristically positive and happy-go-lucky lose that part of themself through pain.
I will always respect Katara that she has such a deep love and understanding of what Aang is going through that she risked her own life to calm him down. Mad respect!
And just the look on their faces when she grabbed him. The look Aang gives her would make anyone piss themselves but katara was never afraid for a moment. Just sad for him. There is so much love and trust between them and such a deep understanding of his needs in that moment. That even in a situation where he was out of control, she fully trusted that he would never hurt her. She literally grounded him.
Can we all stop and appreciate how perfect the score is for this show. The music when Katara is hugging Aang to calm him out of the Avatar state is so beautiful. And so sad to see how much pain he really is in.
Its such a hopeless situation (Toph completely blind, Sokka not helping with plans, Aang completely furious and hopeless) that it just highlights how important Katara's motherly and caring ways are to the group. Also, Aang's anger this episode is so strong and impactful considering how cheerful and free spirited he is. As a monk, its a shocking sight to see him kill something (the vulture-bee) or the fact that he was on the verge of killing the sand benders.
The scary thing when Aang went into the Avatar State was that was 100% him and that he was in no danger. He went into that state with just anger hatred and fear
I just want you guys to remember that Appa is basically all that Aang has of his old normal life and the fact that he's gone is like more deviating for him then anyone else because now he is actually truly alone So while I'm not condoning him yelling at Toph like that, you don't have to be so hard on him for acting the way he is
Actually, Toph can't Sandbend. Or rather, that's too advanced for her. Remember, she attempted to, and she barely got it to move. It's a different form of Earthbending. It's also why she has a harder time using her vibration senses in sand.
I mean, she did sand bend, she just couldn't "see" right. And she was trying to stop the library from falling into the spiritual world, so... That is a pretty good hold back
everything about the confrontation scene is played so so well but I love the way Aang's emotions are displayed. When he learns they muzzled Appa the avatar state kicks in and is just 100% rage and revenge, but once Katara calms him down and the anger boils away you can see that underneath it was deep, deep hurt and sorrow. Beautiful shit, especially for a kids show on nickelodeon.
Aang: “You stole Appa!!!” Anakin: “And kidnapped my mother!!!” Sand people: “We surrender. Please don’t kill us.” Lesson of the day, don’t steal from people who’s names start with an A
I was in a pit of anger when Appa was stolen from Aang, but there was no way I could be mad at Toph she absolutely did the right thing and saved them. And man oh man! When I witnessed Aang go into the avatar state like that - I kid you not the atmosphere dropped (I can’t explain it any better, it was That feeling I never thought I experience as a kid) This episode had me good! Not only that my heart leaped when katara comforted Aang.
I still teared up with that aang being comforted by katara. Like you feel misery and pain in aang, and you also feel empathy from katara. It's just so sad to see aang, a usually happy person, to be in this state. And yeah, avatar state is scary, but even angry aang is scary enough.
The image of tears cascading down Aang's face as his eyes are still aglow with the infinite power and wisdom of countless Avatar's before him has been ingrained in my brain since the first time I saw this episode. Fucking spectacular.
That comes from having to step up after her mother was killed, and after her dad left for war. She's had a lot of practice having to keep a cool head with a lot of weight on her shoulders
I’ve been waiting so long I finished the whole Avatar series before this came out, I’ve waited to long!! But as fast as I clicked on the notification, was as fast as this video sadly ended...
His attitude here seems more in-line with firebending to me. Here's how I see it: Air - is about avoiding or being clever with confrontations. Freedom Fire - is about being confrontational/taking the initiative. Ferocity Earth- is about standing up to confrontation head on. Stubborn Water- is about manipulating the situation to your benefit. Adaptive
aang lost the last piece of his past and culture. He has every right to be angry even if he doesn’t handle it in the best way. It’s absolutely understandable.
Loved the reaction but imma need dude in the middle to cut Aang some slack. Yeah he shouldn’t take his anger out on them but y’all need to understand that Appa’s not just some pet to Aang, that’s his everything and they been through a lot together. So his anger is understandable. ❤️
Of course it’s understandable but that doesn’t mean we have to like it. Aang was out of line for actually blaming Toph and even claiming that she let it happen on purpose.
Javier M I never said Aang wasn’t out of line, he was but at the same time I get it. I’m not saying it’s right but anyone would’ve been pissed if someone took their animal. Not to mention Aang hardly ever gets mad so it was a shock when he went into the avatar state
This! Not to mention hes also 12 years old...cant imagine processing all he has lost at such a young age, and only adding Appa onto it. His behavior was unsavory, but if he acted any different, it’d take away from the depth and realistic emotions this show is so loved for. Aang in this episode is just a kid surging with pain, lashing out at anyone and anything.
Appa and Momo are the last remaining airbenders along with Aang. And Aang and Appa have been together since he was a child, and bonded since. His oldest friend and one of the last scraps of his culture. Oof.
I’ve watched this series so many times and I still cry watching this episode when Aang goes into the Avatar state and Katara pulls him out of it and Aang begins crying when he is in the Avatar State
im so obsessed with yall reactions i literally count days till the next avatar episode PS yall have to understand that appa is more than a pet to aang. they are spiritually connected and have been with each other since a young age. hes all he has left from his past and childhood.
I personally think that sandbenders are basically just a subcategory of earthbenders and due to their location they would do fsr better bending sand rather than solid rocks and the same foes for toph, having so much loose sand around her could potentially make it more difficult for her to earth bend considering its not something she's used to in comparison to bending solid earth/rock
IKR? They said they actually try to turn every moment into fun but sometimes it just can't fit... It kinda did with Zuko in 'Bitter work' but Aang's struggle here? Naa, I hope they don't do that to tales of Iroh and Momo and Appa's lost days

*TELL ME WHERE APPA IS*
@@Sa1nts Rava and other Korra shit isn't canon
Another thing is, this is the first time toph has been around when aang triggered it. With her having more sensitive hearing and never forgeting a voice makes it so chilling. Her friend, a kid her age, suddenly speaking with countless voices at once. Shes frozen in place so sokka has to get her moving(scene was edited out). Its so subtle and forgettable but i love it..
Aang: *"Tell me where Appa is!"*
Toph, who can't see what's going on and is having her first experience with the Avatar state: ⚪👄⚪
The fucking blind version of that meme has me 💀
Lmfao I’m sure Toph was like, you ok twinkle toes?
Nah she definitely sense crazy activity through the vibrations from aang! Probably saw everything vividly until he floated
Imagine being blind like Toph, and you have enchanced sense of hearing or something like that, and you hear *"TELL ME WHERE APPA IS!?"*
Twinkle toes?
I love the circle instead of the opacity one it’s better and more enjoyable please keep using it
I know why they did it but its nice being able to actually see the show :)
@@xnortheast1106 your script broken or something? Or you're a bot?
Just a correction:
Sokka is the oldest one. Toph and Aang are the youngest and same age (12)
Aang is technically the oldest.
I mean aang is technically the oldest 😂 but yeah he’s also technically he’s 12 lol
Brent M lmao u know what I meant😂
Appa is his family, Aang has every right to be upset lol.
@@mnrlzr2181 Don't forget Bumi! Lol
ShinobiPrince he ain’t 20 either
Sokka is the oldest at 15, Katara is 14, Aang and Toph are 12.
These types of episodes where a certain character gets upset, you have to understand where they are coming from. Aang's anger is justified because he and Appa have been together since a very young age. "A sky bison is a friend for life." You'll get to understand the connection they have in upcoming episodes.
If you want to be specific, Aang is technically 112 years old. And Sokka actually turned 16 near the finale of season 1.
Aang doesn't like sand, It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.
Just like Skywalker then
My favorite shot of this episode is when Katara first grabs Aang’s wrist and he just snaps to look at her in the Avatar state, that always got to me
This is the day Toph knew she should not mess with Aang. She is in shock without able to see him in the Avatar State.
12:21 that will always send chills down my spine....
Chills. Every. Single. Time. I watch that scene.
Aang was understandably angry. Your whole culture was whipped out by genocidal maniac and the only thing that connects you to your culture is your best friend. Aang has the burden of being 100 years too late and some people hate u for that. Loosing appa trigger those emotions and hit aang like a ton of bricks.
katara is the underrated GOAT of this episode, literally pulled her hurt and tired friends together through the FUCKING desert
"Keek Eet Down." My cousin and I have been using that quote since aired.
"Zuko so gangster he gots two wanted posters" 😭🤣🤣 6:00
It’s just frustrating seeing him get mad at toph, i get it but it’s just not right
Bro I just got chills when Aang spoke in the avatar state. “Tell me where appa is!”
Aang: YOU MUZZLED APPA?!
Kyoshi: Finally. Give me the controller.
Exactly
Thank you
Just really being unempathic, really baffles me seeing adults react like that
Yeah, that’s the thing about this show.
Aang really said:

Ya muzzled Appa?!
I got chills everytime avatar state talks
"Cactus Jackass" idk why but that had me rolling bruh😂😂😂
I can't skip that intro even if I tried 😩

The scary thing when Aang went into the Avatar State was that was 100% him and that he was in no danger. He went into that state with just anger hatred and fear
Sokka just being baked the whole episode is the best
I just want you guys to remember that Appa is basically all that Aang has of his old normal life and the fact that he's gone is like more deviating for him then anyone else because now he is actually truly alone
So while I'm not condoning him yelling at Toph like that, you don't have to be so hard on him for acting the way he is
Actually, Toph can't Sandbend.
That is a pretty good hold back
@@zannchristo But that was more of her Earthbending the LIBRARY, not Sandbending the sand...
@@TheGloryXros Toph can sandbend. She just couldn't do it good cause like these two people said, she was literally holding up a whole library.
@Leanna S. she cant do it well. She says so herself, and works to improve it come next season
She can sandbend, but she says that the sand is always moving and shifty so it messes with her “vision”
I swear i was waiting for this episode just to see the reaction to "you muzzled appa" Boiii
Sheera’s tearbending when Katara hug Aang:’)
everything about the confrontation scene is played so so well but I love the way Aang's emotions are displayed. When he learns they muzzled Appa the avatar state kicks in and is just 100% rage and revenge, but once Katara calms him down and the anger boils away you can see that underneath it was deep, deep hurt and sorrow. Beautiful shit, especially for a kids show on nickelodeon.
Aang: “You stole Appa!!!”
Anakin: “And kidnapped my mother!!!”
Sand people: “We surrender. Please don’t kill us.”
Lesson of the day, don’t steal from people who’s names start with an A
This episode aired along with "The Library" as part of the one-hour special, Avatar: The Fury of Aang.
I don't know why, but I love the avatar state voice, its so epic.
The image of tears cascading down Aang's face as his eyes are still aglow with the infinite power and wisdom of countless Avatar's before him has been ingrained in my brain since the first time I saw this episode. Fucking spectacular.
Imagine Toph, just hearing Aang’s voice change
13:05 that scene not only brings me chills, but also brings me close to shedding a tear
Seeing Aang go in full anger because Appa was taken was one of my favorite moments and seeing him break down and cry was one of the saddest.
12:55 It made me chuckle so bad when yoshi said "The golden booty" like aw man 🤣 what a way to tag such moment 🤣🤣
One of my fav things in this ep is how calmy Katara responds 💙😭

I’ve been waiting so long I finished the whole Avatar series before this came out, I’ve waited to long!!
But as fast as I clicked on the notification, was as fast as this video sadly ended...
His attitude here seems more in-line with firebending to me. Here's how I see it:
Air - is about avoiding or being clever with confrontations. Freedom
Fire - is about being confrontational/taking the initiative. Ferocity
Earth- is about standing up to confrontation head on. Stubborn
Water- is about manipulating the situation to your benefit. Adaptive
Good comment
Yep spoiler if you haven't watched book 3...
Zuko literally yells at Aang to get angry when he's teaching him firebending...
13:05 she literally was going to make me cry that scene alone was so emotional
aang lost the last piece of his past and culture. He has every right to be angry even if he doesn’t handle it in the best way. It’s absolutely understandable.
Toph: You said to put a muzzle on him!
Aang: Avatar state! *YIP YIP*
Not to mention Aang hardly ever gets mad so it was a shock when he went into the avatar state
@@tasminegrayson3885 yeah Appa is the last thing Aang has of his culture so it makes sense why he was angry when he found out he was taken

XNorthEast isn’t fire about anger?
@@xnortheast1106 yes they are. Fire bending is about anger and passion.
At the time for most people of the Fire Nation, fire bending was channeled through inner rage.

Never was that early damn! Was waiting for this episode
"the golden booty" XD what a way to ruin a moment XD
IKR? They said they actually try to turn every moment into fun but sometimes it just can't fit... It kinda did with Zuko in 'Bitter work' but Aang's struggle here? Naa, I hope they don't do that to tales of Iroh and Momo and Appa's lost days
