      Not only has Qantas had fatal crashes but has lost 2 planes due to shoot downs. All up the crashes and the shoot downs resulted in about 100 fatalities. Qantas itself doesn't claim that it's never had a fatal accident. They make the claim that they've never had a fatality due to a jetliner crash.

    • @geoffhill6992
      @geoffhill6992 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was not clear in my statement - should add that they have had a few minor crashes since advent of jet age - but none involved fatalaties since circa 1960 - but qantas did indeed have a few crashes before the jet age - involving prop planes - and fatalaties did occur

    Never noticed until now but some superb visual composition going on at 0.07 and 0.16. Firstly Ray’s head splits the screen, he looks at the TV on the right while yuppie Charlie is keeping his business afloat on the phone, on the left. Secondly - and this is brilliant from Levinson - you have Charlie taking up 2/3 of the screen on the phone, while the much smaller figure of Ray, glued to the TV, is on the right. The split in the screen contrasts their lives, the size of Charlie relative to Ray projects Charlie’s selfish mindset at that moment, where his own brother matters only to him because of money.

    Unfortunately this is UNTRUE. QANTAS never has had a crash involving total hull loss or fatality since the dawn of the jet era in 1960. That year a QANTAS Super Constellation crashed after a failed take off in Mauritius. No deaths however then. Prior to this, from its formation in 1922; QANTAS had 65 crashes with 72 deaths. Not including enemy activity in WW2 ! The worst culprit was the badly designed De Havilland DH 86. Bad experiences with this plane led QANTAS to American manufacturers and it has never purchased any British made aircraft since. it retired the Short Sunderland flying-boats in the 1950s.

    Qantas have crashed before, just never a 'fatal' crash since the jet age. There were a few crashes during WW2 of qantas planes, and one in the Maldives in the 50s where a Connie lost power after takeoff and crashed, killing the few passengers on board. With the outsourcing of the maintenance, i think a crash is inevitable.

  • @AussieVR4
    @AussieVR4 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    True, the planes were very out dated and back in those days flying was rather "primitive". Once jet planes were introduced so were far greater safety standards. Which has resulted in relatively safe air travel. These standards how ever have dropped since the new owners (a British based company) have bought the airline. Jobs that were performed by professional and highly skilled Australian workers are now performed by our cheaper Asian counterparts. Needless to say it's only a matter of time.

    i am an australian. and yes qantas have never crashed but they also dont fly as much as the big american airline companies, if they did they will eventually crash as the laws of statistics say.

    You'd think that Raymond would know that driving is far more dangerous than flying.

    right, but they safety record since '49 is pretty clean. No other major carrier can demonstrate similar. I thing Finn Air (AY) is pretty close though.

    This wasn't product placement, but two the film's writers were later rewarded with upgrading to first class the next time they flew with Qantas. The information is inaccurate anyway, since Qantas crashed several times during the propeller era. However, Qantas hasn't had any fatalities since the introduction of jets.

    Ironic, when he was talking about Canberra, he said "Very Lovely Beaches", yet Canberra is in fact inland. Great movie.

    The only reason Tom Cruise wasn't given Oscar consideration was because people dislike his character so much. But he played it brilliantly, biggest BS...
