This has got to be the most perfect foul in history. Just everything about; Caniggia goes flying, the boot comes off, even the commentary "He won't get past that challenge!" just brilliant
Massing was a warrior, he was a friend of my dads and I met him once in January of 2017. He didn’t speak much but he had a massive presence not just because of his size but because of the respect he naturally commanded. May god bless his soul and may he rest in peace.
Believe it or not, this tackle actually appears in the best book on football ever. Nick Hornby writes in Fever Pitch, that "I enjoyed enormously Massing's murderous assault on Caniggia, followed by his valedictory wave to the crowd".
Canniggia is rolling round in agony and none of his team mates even bother to check if he's ok. Too interested in telling the ref to book him. That's why he gave him 3 cards, they all asked for 1 each
The second tackle just about unbalanced him enough for him not to be able to escape the execution of the third. This conceivably changed the course of the tournament. This could have been the best goal at any World Cup ever, the score would have been one all, and Cameroon might not have made the quarter finals. A fantastic take out though. Merciless, and self sacrifice beyond measure.
Can't believe i found this. Was just telling my son about this crazy moment that i remember watching in my childhood. Thought I'd try n find it to show him. Great times and thanks for uploading bro 👍🏻
Took one for the team, wasn’t going to allow this kid to do to them what Diego did to the English 4 years earlier…it was building up to be something special.
1990 - The greatest world cup ever, even better than Mexico 1970. It had everything, and this match summed up the world cup superbly - the underdogs beating the then world champions. Every world cup has shocks wins and defeats, which makes it so special. That tackle was legendary. Having watched two of his team mates try to take Caniggia out and fail miserably, Massing set off on a mission solely to kick Caniggia into orbit - ball, what ball?. Mission accomplished. It was 1990 that 38 year old Roger Milla (pronounced Mee-la) was superb, scoring several goals and then the iconic celebration around the corner flag. He then played in the 1994 world cup at the age of 42 and scored a goal or two from memory! Happy dayz and memories of 1990.
that was brilliant!! then the defender pleads to the ref "Look ref - we tried to foul him twice and he ws too quick or jumped to high...what else could I have honestly done??" LOL
These are the Indomitable Lions we know; they are just a shadow of themselves today. We, Cameroonians, are wondering if we will ever have a squad like this. With tears in my eyes.
massing should have received a trophy for the best tackle in football history. Carneiga is lucky, that he is still playing football, he should have been in hospital..bravo massing
The first one thought about scything him down then decided against it, the second tried but didn't quite manage it, but there was No Messing from Massing.
Watched this in a bar near the office where I worked. The cheers for each challenge on Caniggia reached a comic climax thanks to Benjamin Massing (RIP). The whole world could see that he would the one to clean the ponce out.
This is a on point example of how much tackling a Argentina boy can take for their country. One of the fastest for sure. This is similar to that Italian soccer that the world knows what it is. La velocidad de Argentina no se replica 💯
Oye che, you are so right. I am an Argentina fan, and I go for England too. Just like you, but in reverse. Let's not hate, cause the beautiful game is a worldwide thing. That goal that Michael Owen scored on us in the World cup was just brilliance. It was my favorite of that cup. (Im sure you remember which one) Peace out bro, Let's not let a stupid war interfere in the beautiful sport we call futbol!!!
and typical of an argie (burruchaga) to tread on Massings toe - classic - you gotta love the gamesmanship. The Argentinian league is one of the worlds most entertaining too - shed loads of goals, skills, fouls and sendings off - great stuff!
I love the fact the ref showed him a red card and then afterwards a yellow one. It made it look as though it was so bad a challenge that a red card on its own wasn't good enough.
Etoo is such a good attacker because in cameroon, this are the defenders you have to pass if you must Score.I love my country. This team was great. Milla trained with guys rawer than massing
Massing with a tackle that borders on criminal assault. Watch closely you'll see that how the skillful Caniggia managed to avoid two yellow card tackles prior to this sickening challenge!
because he wanted to tell him that even though you have a yellow card from this game that foul is worth a red card, then he showed him his second yellow
I used to play as a defender and sometimes you just have to do this and take the hit for the team. Full marks to Cannigia for staying on his feet, a lot of modern players would have gone down under the first challenge.
Sometimes you just “have” to brutally savage a player while making precisely zero attempt to play the ball? You must have been a horrifically bad defender.
Exactly right! he's their most hated player. He's booed everytime he gets the ball but in the last game at our ground he scored and it went real quiet, until he ran to the EFC fans and kissed his Man u badge!(to wind them up because hed been booed) Then it erupted in fury! Im not one to 'hate' him - i think he let us down but you have to be realistic re:his career and £. Im quite proud that our academy 'created' such a player - hope we do it again
"NO LEAVY GO!" Were the pidgin lingo words that Massing heard from his defense partner before acting out. Apparently. I don't know if this sequence could get more beautiful than what it is, but if so, that background storyline would.
I believe the uploader's comment, "The greatest tackle in the history of the World Cup" is fairly accurate. I remember this, remember the 1, 2, 3 - oh shit! I can only add - but what did the Argy-Bargies do, to deserve this..?
Why can't England players make that sort of challenge when we're 1-0 up against someone?! It is the best tackle of all time. Really does the term 'committed' justice.
The most vicious tackle I’ve ever seen. Caniggia was flying. What a run. Credit to him for keeping his balance. Any other player wouldve swan dived instantly, particularly Neymar the great faker.
No I mean really. He died relatively young just recently. Read here. www.fifa.com/worldcup/news/y=2017/m=12/news=maradona-rend-hommage-a-massing-2924455-2924558.html
i can still remember coming home from school and watching this, the sickening stupid crass 'challenge' by the unprofessional cameroon and then the argentinian chap pushing him when hes trying to put his boot back on
I'm sure Massing would've gladly been sent off if it meant ensuring his teams victory. It's not difficult to see why he did it. All I'm saying was that It was still a cruel tackle that got what it deserved. That's all. After all, how would Cannigia have felt?
Thats a quality tackle .... a patriotic one too. He knew Argentina will not score from the resulting free kick. He knew the game was over ... he had to make a choice .. too bad for Argentina. I love the way Cameroonians defend when they mean business. Look at Song. 2 red cards in 2 world cups. He holds the record with Zidane lol.
i would agree with that in terms of entertainment value, and i would but the Argentinian league up there as well - they just dont have the same number of big name players there due to finances. We used the get the games here over 10 years ago and i used to watch them all - great stuff
Its a bit like the team-work you see among carnivores on the African savannah, taking turns in softening the prey before its butchered rather heavily by the last one.
Now you don't have to be racist to post a racist comment you can say something that given context is quite racist and be perfectly oblivious to it, whether through willful igorance or cheerful naivety, but one thing remains, that's a bit of a racist comment you've posted there. Of course comparing, for example, the Wimbledon of the Crazy Gang to a bunch of animals is a different thing, but I don't make the rules up.
After seeing this amazing tackle, the NFL’s Buffalo Bills tried to sign Massing for the 1990 season, however, negotiations broke down at the last minute. The Bills would go on to lose that year’s super bowl, partially due to poor tackling. Too bad, Massing had perfect form here.
People forget that African football was largely an unknown quantity in 1990. Bobby Robson expressed surprise at the physicality of the Cameroon side, and that the players knew who he was!
Alex Gasson Did you watch 2010 final between Holland and Spain? I don't remember anyone talking about the 'physicality' of European sides. Or look up Schumacher on Battiston, 82. This sort of thing is hardly peculiar to any one continent.
I dislike Argentina like most Englishmen do but I find it hard to keep hating them when you see the brilliance of Maradona or that incredible 24 pass goal in the last World Cup. Let's not hate, let's enjoy the special rivalry our two countries have.
Right on! Who says football isn't a physical sport, right? I mean, in leagues where the ref calls every single contact as a foul, the game gets boring, it builds up no momentum. You'll often find the fans yawning or going to buy another beer. But in our leagues,(for example) the quick pace is kept alive.
haha, what really adds to the comedy value is when the ref gives him a straight red and then a yellow after as well!!? As if to really make sure everyone knows it was a bad tackle!
This has got to be the most perfect foul in history. Just everything about; Caniggia goes flying, the boot comes off, even the commentary "He won't get past that challenge!" just brilliant
the best reducer i've seen in 40 years
🤣🤣😆
If Neymar got tackled like that, he would be rolling for the next 10 years.
Caniggia was down for eight. he'd been hit properly.
Kkkkkkkkkkkkk
😂😂😂
Duracell bunny
Neymar would have gone down from the first challenge!
Massing was a warrior, he was a friend of my dads and I met him once in January of 2017. He didn’t speak much but he had a massive presence not just because of his size but because of the respect he naturally commanded. May god bless his soul and may he rest in peace.
Claudio Caniggia the LEGEND!!
greetings to all Argentinias from Serbia
Nikola K. I join my fellow Serb in greeting Argentina! Жив био брате!
Rest in peace Benjamin Massing, he passed away yesterday December 9, 2017 at the age of 55.
his suspension from this tackle was going to be lifted in 2018, shame
Claudio Caniggia finally comes out of hiding.
shame. a heroic defender
Good
@@donmauro8123 you're a poor useless creature...
One of the greatest open-ice checks in the game of hockey...
man, how I loved watching Caniggia do those long runs.
How I love seeing the long runs come to a happy ending.

Canniggia is rolling round in agony and none of his team mates even bother to check if he's ok. Too interested in telling the ref to book him. That's why he gave him 3 cards, they all asked for 1 each
his team mates knew he was ok....Caniggia was "rolling round in agony" 75% of the game lol
Massing deserved man of the match award for that moment alone
The second tackle just about unbalanced him enough for him not to be able to escape the execution of the third. This conceivably changed the course of the tournament. This could have been the best goal at any World Cup ever, the score would have been one all, and Cameroon might not have made the quarter finals.

The best tackle in world cup history.
That wasn't World cup. That game was the final of Olympic Atlanta 96.
Santo Santos No, this was in the opening game of Italia 90.
Santo Santos Argentina vs Cameron 1990 in San Siro, Italy ended 1-0 for Cameron
Andro Barsoum Cameroon

Great stuff. The Argies have always been dirty so that challenge was well deserved. They have no right to complain about anyone.

That wasn't a tackle, but a well-executed waza-ari.
red card....yellow card.....and another!
The yellow was for the foul. The red because he lose his shoe.. FIFA's rules.
That is _LIQUID_ football!
Best world cup moment ever
My favourite slow mo chop down, took 3 goes but got there in the end. I remember watching the game we were laughing for ages.
@Mrfairchap😂😂😂😂😂
One of kind was Claudio. Great player with a madcap personality.
In Romania lots of boys around that time had the nickname Caniggia. I thing it’s true all over the world. Great player indeed !
He even lost the shoe!!! Fantastic!!!
never stops being funny
I love the fact the ref showed him a red card and then afterwards a yellow one. It made it look as though it was so bad a challenge that a red card on its own wasn't good enough.
Or maybe the ref meant to show the yellow initially but accidentally held the red up, so was correcting his mistake 🤣
The greatest tackle of all time
