No mention of Dr. Karel Raška? He was the head of the smallpox eradication effort in the 1960s and his disease surveillance method allowed the WHO to track the disease down to the very last patient. Before Dr. Raška proposed his plan, the WHO believed the eradication effort would never succeed in the developing countries.
Thanks. There's a lot here that I didn't know before. George Washington variolated the Continental Army during the American Revolution, before Jenner coined the term "vaccination."
I personally didn't even find it all that morally questionable. For one thing those orphans got to get vaccinated and it was the only practical method i can think of to bring the cow pox with them that I can think of that would be available. Those orphans getting cow pox was literally a good thing for them.
it was not a mistake is you need to put a small number of people to help millions then I is hard to argue that is inmoral. more so on orphans where nobody outside them is gonna care.
You can not reason with irrationality I'm afraid. Ergo for most of those flakes you will simply have to wait for them to die off while preventing new ones via better education.
But at least I can understand why that'd be the case in the beginning. New medical techniques from a small-town doctor. Slow spreading of information about and understanding of the process and results to the general public. Disastrous "replicated" procedures by other doctors. At least, the skepticism was understandable. What's the excuse now?

Once more another great mecial / epidimiological video of one of my most beloved channels on TH-cam. Keep up your great work.Always looking forward for new content from you. Just curiously asking, you mentioned that Smallpox was one of two diseases to be eradicated. What was the other one?
Would that we could. DA Henderson was the American epidemiologist who organized and oversaw the global Smallpox eradication effort. He wrote a book about the experience. Yet even back then with the scourge of Smallpox fresh in everyone's minds he faced considerable resistance. Many believed he would fail and he had to contend with doubters and politicos who initially opposed the effort. Nothing comes easy unfortunately. The world has not yet learned to work together.
This Jenner doctor seemed to be the embodiment of what all doctors should strive to be. Also anyone find this kind of ironic considering Covid became known not long after the video was released.
There are only a small stock of samples in a CDC lab in Atlanta and in the VECTOR laboratory in Novosibirsk. Neither are biological warfare labs. The WHO also hold the power to decide when to destroy the last stocks and officially destroy the disease for good.
I got smallpox(in the military but it's a weakened form kinda like a vaccine)and it honestly sucked. I could only imagine what the full fledged smallpox disease was like.
I met Richard Preston at a talk he gave a few years ago. He signed my copy of The Hot Zone and Demon in the Freezer. I was a CBRN soldier at the time, and both books were on the chemical school reading list.

Exurb1a, *Misery was*
You’re videos are the reason I’m going to get full marks on my history exams. Thank you :)
I hope that the policing London series comes back, anyways it’s good and interesting to see medical history.
Hello TH-cam why is this not Trending?
Medical Science is God's gift to man for pursuing knowledge and research and understanding. God bless those who risk thier lives for the advancement of Medical Science. So that no more will others have to suffer from disease and illness.
Vaccine was not an impostor
1 impostor remains
May 17th, Jenner's birthday, should be an international holiday I think.
don't we have an official date for the invention of the procedure? I think that is more fitting. :)
I love these kinds of videos, disease is a personal obsession of mine
kinky
Can relate
ik what u mean but this sounds horribly wrong😂😂😂😂
“One of only 2 diseases humans have eradicated.”
Reeeaalllly feels like you’re tempting fate here.
Finding this video just gives me that little bit of hope. That there are people out there so devoted to saving lives that that alone motivates them. Not profit or a political agenda. Just saving lives because it's the right thing to do.
A hut in his back garden called The Temple of Vaccinia? That's very extra ^^
“But not everyone believed Jenner’s work.”
People today still don’t accept it
Me getting shingles
Extra Credits publishes video about smallpox
Coincidence? I think not!
My great grandmother had this..she was from Elaine arkansas, had a hole in her nose from one of the pustules
I like how smallpox just loses opacity and distorts. BOOM eradicated.
Thanks. There's a lot here that I didn't know before. George Washington variolated the Continental Army during the American Revolution, before Jenner coined the term "vaccination."
For a story about using orphans to keep a virus alive this is a surprisingly wholesome story about humanity working together
Karen: its not written by my friend so its fake
everyone: :/
I hope you're joking i can't tell
the gaming cobra he is
Karen's children: x_x x_x x_x
9:22 literal chills
Love to see nothing changed in hundred of years
Humanity’s great right
i guess we still haven't gotten past that whole anti vaccination thing after all
You can not reason with irrationality I'm afraid. Ergo for most of those flakes you will simply have to wait for them to die off while preventing new ones via better education.
I often think how many people we have to thank to be here and to live in such a beautiful and safe world . Edward Jenner would be one of them .
What I found most interesting is that Anti-Vaccinations were around even at the start. I guess for good there must also be bad.
But at least I can understand why that'd be the case in the beginning. New medical techniques from a small-town doctor. Slow spreading of information about and understanding of the process and results to the general public. Disastrous "replicated" procedures by other doctors. At least, the skepticism was understandable. What's the excuse now?
@@em5522 Fear of the unknown? Or we have become so "educated" with the internet being so easily available that people have become pompous. Fearing other peoples motives. Those are my guesses.
Gaining trust is a good option.
"One of only 2 diseases we've wiped out."
Pro-Plague Parent: Hold my dead toddler...
It's true everyone, antivaxers have always been around sadly
Once more another great mecial / epidimiological video of one of my most beloved channels on TH-cam. Keep up your great work.Always looking forward for new content from you.
Just curiously asking, you mentioned that Smallpox was one of two diseases to be eradicated. What was the other one?
Cattel Pluage
A beautiful episode. Thank you
Guys, can we just work together and get rid of more diseases like how we eradicated smallpox?
Would that we could. DA Henderson was the American epidemiologist who organized and oversaw the global Smallpox eradication effort. He wrote a book about the experience. Yet even back then with the scourge of Smallpox fresh in everyone's minds he faced considerable resistance. Many believed he would fail and he had to contend with doubters and politicos who initially opposed the effort. Nothing comes easy unfortunately. The world has not yet learned to work together.
Soviet ambassador : I submit we eradicate smallpox
The US ambassador : The only good thing that’s come from your mouth
This Jenner doctor seemed to be the embodiment of what all doctors should strive to be. Also anyone find this kind of ironic considering Covid became known not long after the video was released.
This man needs a movie
Us: 'We have eradicated smallpox.'
Smallpox: ' * *laughs in secret biological warfare lab* *'
There are only a small stock of samples in a CDC lab in Atlanta and in the VECTOR laboratory in Novosibirsk. Neither are biological warfare labs. The WHO also hold the power to decide when to destroy the last stocks and officially destroy the disease for good.
This man deserves to have his face on a British pound note in the future
this is slightly depressing to watch in the distant future of 2021
Ohhh . . . The chills at the end!
I got smallpox(in the military but it's a weakened form kinda like a vaccine)and it honestly sucked. I could only imagine what the full fledged smallpox disease was like.
The letter at the end gave me goosebumps
The Demon in the Freezer is one of my favorite books
I met Richard Preston at a talk he gave a few years ago. He signed my copy of The Hot Zone and Demon in the Freezer. I was a CBRN soldier at the time, and both books were on the chemical school reading list.
