VTOL VR - Weapon systems and how to use them

  • In this video we look at the available weapons on AH-94 and how to use each one. I also look at the different tactics to employ the gun, which is the most effective weapon on this aircraft.
    I am sorry, I lost my head a few times (literally) as my GoPro decided to stop shooting the video and do some photos and bursts, for no good reason. I salvaged what I could.

      I believe you mean AGM-145s? They have the ability to lock on after launch (LOAL) and can avoid obstacles in most cases. 114s are laser guided and in my experience, rather useless as you have to keep the target in optical/laser sight until it hits the target. I have to agree that the speed indicated is way off, you can see this especially when landing with helicopter - I didn’t pay attention to it until you mentioned it. I doesn’t take away from the enjoyment though and at higher altitudes, its imperceptible.

    @WesBrook77 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Cool vid! :) How do you keep the helicopter so stable when switching off AP? For me, as soon as I switch off AP, the chopper just rotates/banks/drops with no inputs whatsoever (and no trim). This is the one thing I really struggle with. I get everything lined up, switch off AP then it's a roller coaster for 30 seconds trying to get the damn thing straight again using manual control (Quest 2 tracking controllers).

    • @kruger78
      @kruger78  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Wesley, thank you for the comment. I don’t think there is a particular way to do it successfully every time (none that I discovered). I still sometimes experience the same as you described but maybe less often than before. I make sure to grab the right stick and try to centre it as much as possible (observing the input indicator bottom right on the hood) and reset the trim on every axis as this was countering the offset before so it would now be pulling to one side. There should be no need for any trim when hovering. Also, reducing the angle on the rotor blades by dropping the collector a bit, tends not to exaggerate the imbalance as much as when fully engaged. In other words, try an mimic the hover mode before disengaging, if that makes sense 🤔

    • @kruger78
      @kruger78  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@LarsZulfoDKJensen Agreed, I found that lowering the collective helps in most situations where you lose control of the heli, which makes sense as you are effectively depowering it. • @ScarryHarry93
    @ScarryHarry93 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also, a lot of people are complaining about head movement, but they must have never really watched VR footage or recorded themselves in VR. The only reason you don't realize how much your head moves constantly, is because you eyes counteract movement and can remain locked on a picture - making you think you are still.
    Recording raw VR footage on a square screen that can't gimbal will make you realize quickly that your head is never really that still, especially with an unnatural weight putting you off-balance while in VR

    • @kruger78
      @kruger78  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is very true, VR makes for a very difficult 2D watching. Some tubers have really nailed it with the head stability and I am doing my best but its difficult when I’m actually flying and it doesn’t quite work just to move the eyes around as the FOV is rather limiting. But watching VR, just like playing VR, is not for everyone and with some it does induce nausea 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @kruger78
      @kruger78  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is entirely possible. I never compared the range of in-game missiles to their real counterparts and its possible that the developer has reduced both, the range of missiles and the range of enemy radars, probably in order to bring us closer to the action and reduce the map size for better performance. I can only assume that both ranges were reduced proportionally.

    • @kruger78
      @kruger78  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael, I don’t think Ballistas work that way, at least not in VTOL. The in-game description is a bit misleading and I see why you would think that. You will see in my last video where I used the LOAL functionality, when I forgot to slave the gps point to TADS, the missile did not hit the target even though it was pointed in the close vicinity of the targets. They do automatically lock on to the target locked on by TADS and LOAL simply delays the target lock until the missile has a visual. I also never saw anyone use them as you described but I’m curious, I’ll give it a try with and without TADS just to see what happens.

      @@crooker2 In my experience with VTOL, you should be able to reload at any allied airbase, carrier or cruise ship, unless the mission briefing states otherwise (i.e. the stealth mission with F-45 where it states you start off from FARP and you will have no reloading or refuelling). Other times, you could be able to reload from an airbase that you’ve seized and cleared of enemies (i.e. last mission with AV-42C). In stock missions for AH-94, there aren’t many opportunities to reload apart from where you take off. I didn’t try the airport in Sudden Strike but I doubt it would be possible. In on of the steamwork missions, Basra in Iraq, mission developer has set a number of friendly reload points so you go wherever is the closest.
      You raise a very good point though - how to know where you can reload? I didn’t find any tbh, once you touch down at helipad, you hear “the ground crew is ready for you” but it would be nice to have a similar feature to Fuel where it would point you to the closest re-load point 👍🏻 or means to ask through the comms.

    • @kruger78
      @kruger78  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jamila, VTOL VR was developed around the VR, not just the visual representation but the interaction in the cockpit which depends on the VR controllers and virtual hands they create. This is why it doesn’t have any HOTAS support as it would be impractical - unless the controllers in the future could be replaced by haptic gloves. For the time being, there are no plans to introduce HOTAS support but I believe that the external rudder is supported, though I didn’t try it myself.
      The way it is designed though is incredible and very intuitive and you do have a feeling of working the actual controls, if you can try it yourself.
      Regarding the AI response - this is just a target practice map and enemies do bot fire back. This is so you can practice various weapon systems without any pressure. In any normal mission, AI does react, is organised and will shoot you down if you are not careful.
