Fix A Flat Tire With Flex Tape? Will It Work?

  • I decided it be fun to see if Flex Tape (by the Flex Seal people) would work to fix a flat tire. I tried a simple puncture with a screw, a cut, and a major laceration. I also did test rides to verify the tire would hold after patching the tube.

hey rj love your vids, very helpful. Please do a video on duct tape, electrical tape, gorilla tape etc as bicycle rim tape. Many claim it works great or even better than rim tape/strips and prevents nipples damaging innertube. Also some say nylon filament packing tape or 3M strapping/reinforced tape is the best. Thanks!

      They weigh nothing.
It's a sticker, you just rough up the tube near the hole and stick it on. No glue needed.

I really like the idea of using it as a tube fix as our local bike shop cannot get certain sizes of tubes and tires. As far as tires maybe a test of gorilla glue on holes or slashes might be interesting to try. I’m amazed at things I’ve fixed with it. I’ve used flex seal on my kayak to seal a compartment and it worked.

My thing is, yes I use tubes on my lesser expensive HTs, but I have a pinch-flat on a rear tire I had on my FS Stumpjumper that's tubeless. I replaced the tire, but if I want to use the "pinch-flat" tire again, I'd have to run it with a tube. I was wondering if I could try and patch the pinch flat from the INSIDE and see if it'll run tubeless with the sealant again. After seeing your little experiment here, I think I'm gonna' give it a shot. Can't get worse I'd still have to run that older tire with a tube anyway, so I think I'll try it.

Cut some quarter sized patches, add a few alcohol pads and you now have a glue-less patch kit.

Great video. Any idea whether this would work as an emergency repair on a slick tubeless tire when the sealant doesn't fix the leak?

I will definitely get some! Will go well with my shoe goo that I use on the tire.

Kinda fun to test it out. Higher pressure probably wouldn’t hold. Like the video.

Not sure. That's more pressure squeezing the tape between the tube and tire.

What did that inner tube ever do to you... 😄 I miss just one test of this for next time, cut the tube clean in half and do a full circle patch. Always love your videos, good to see you back on bike too!

Interesting stuff. Thanks for the heads up. I will check if it’s available here in Europe. Some small sections for emergency repairs on the gravel tube or as a boot for a torn sidewall....? Your back looks to be on the mend👍🏻

Great application, I was getting tired of buying the little glue tubes for patches that once opening dry out. Pain to have so many patches unused and no dang glue. And I had an unopened box of the flex products that was bought years ago, looks like some strong stuff.

This would probably work just as good as regular tire patches. Meaning that they will get you home. But, I usually replace innertubes that have been patched anyway.

Thank you. It may pay to sand those ridges down if patching over one of them. I use one of those scourers that come in the repair kits. I think the flex tape would be quicker and easier still, not having to wait for glue to get tacky. And patch glue, once you open one of those little tubes, it needs to be used fairly quickly.

Hey RJ, the third experiment was so rediculous , maybe a blown tube? I don't know, but how surprise it holds the seal. I can see why the second patch failed. You got to flatten the seam before applying the tape, perhaps stress it on a short pipe and file it flat, and use some kind of narrow roller on the tape to make it really bond to the tube. Great video as always. Stay safe!

“Punches tire” seems to be holding air
“Comes back a week later” we’ll it’s not holding air

Well it works better than some if those no glue patches that wirk if they feel like it. Its a good idea to carry some pieces of this in the tool bag.

The patch works fine, just needs more sanding on those ridges. Nice vid :)

In real world situations where you get a flat during a ride, I wouldn't want to lose time sitting on the side of the road with a small pump praying that my rubber cement patch holds when it's easy enough to carry a spare and install that. In most things I want to repair rather than replace, but spare tubes are an incredible time saver on the road.
Flex tape looks like a much more reliable option than rubber cement for those moments when you need a quick fix to get where you need to be without changing out the tube. I think this sort of option requires follow-up videos to see how well the patches hold over time.
I've never felt confident patching tires, admittedly.

Thanks for the tip. What kind of pressure were you pumping the repaired tire to? From the size of the tire I suspect it was maybe 40 psi or less. It would be curious to see if the results would be the same at higher pressures? Would the use of vulcanizing " glue" be beneficial? Just some followup thoughts.

Innovative, I can see someone packing this on a long cross country trip for repairs a long way from home. A good test though. I use a wallpaper seam roller to press a patch in place. And narrow gorilla tape as rim tape on 26" wheels.

Great video, going to start carrying some of this tape on my kit. Do you think the flex tape would hold up under high psi pressures like on a road bike innertube ?

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think it might since the tape is being pressed on tighter between the tube and the tire.
