First Sabbath, Opeth, and Gojira, then Maiden and now Mastodon?! I'll be putting my money where my mouth is soon for more Mastodon. Like others I was put onto them when I went to see Gojira on tour earlier this year (they were monstrous live as expected) but Mastodon blew my mind. Their range from heavy sludge metal, to a masterclass of progressive metal, and great use of 3 unique vocalists, while always sounding like themselves, makes them one of the only bands I listen to these days. Glad you enjoyed this, looking forward to much more! Their range and musicality is seriously enormous.

Branns' drum sounds on the last few albums is the best in the business imo. His drums actually sound like you're sitting behind a real drum kit, just perfected.

The bass player once described Brann as an octopus sitting behind a drum kit, and I think that's strangley fitting

Just went to Mastodon recently with Gojira. I feel like Blood and Thunder was the only song they did that Brann didn't do the majority of the vocals on. He was the "front man " in my opinion, for the entire show. He never missed a beat. They are a great band to see live.

There’s a MEINL Cymbals live drum cam video of “High Road” in which Brann sings and of course plays drums in. Also on their channel is live drumming and singing footage of “Dry Bone Valley” one of my favorites.
    Love the videos! 🤘🤘

One of the things I like the most about Brann's drumming is how he does so much on the snare alone. So many rock drummers do the classic fills with their 87 Tom's and 68 cymbals, but Brann does wild snare fills like some drumline escapee.

Saw them a few times in small clubs around Remission & early Leviathan tours. First time the place was half-empty but I remember standing there along with my band at the time's singer - both of us with mouths open like idiots while having our faces thoroughly melted! Brann is such a monster. Fill God.
EDIT: Leviathan is a masterpiece. The whole album from start to finish.

Brann is like the King of the drumfill. Their most recent album is alot more mellow (but still awesome!) Check out "more than I could chew". Brann does alot of the clean vocals on the later albums (And he has got a quite nice voice)

This is really someone you should do a deep dive with, Mastodon goes from almost grunge era sounding stuff all the way to really really heavy stuff in their early years. But Brann is a machine, you did the Ghosts of Karelia wayyyy back and I’ve always asked why you haven’t gotten back to him. You said you would and FINALLY you have. He is one of the greats and I think his style is one that will be right up your alley.

Battle at Sea from Call of the Mastodon is still one of my favorites! What i also love about this band is, that in the past 20 years I've heard them evolve their sound with each album and i love their oldest stuff as well as their newest stuff... no matter how their style changes, it still sounds uniquely mastodon

Brann is so unique and unusual for a metal player in that much of his focus is around the snare rather than going around the kit of double kick etc. Incredibly unique. Awesome songwriter too.

Their 3 first records where recorded without a metronome and that is why there are not alot of drum playthroughs of brann playing the songs except from some live drum cams. He made 3 more meinl videos though from the latest albums

A band you could throw a dart at and find a great track. Their earlier stuff like this is definitely more intense than where they are now. But they have held on to a great progressive vibe throughout.

Brann usually improvises even on the album drum tracks. But with Blood and Thunder, I'm pretty sure it's their most played song, so Brann has a set way of playing it, almost identically every time (from what I´ve seen)

I was on a shoot for work around 2005 and one of the crew members heard my team making fun of me for loving King Diamond. We started talking, and he LOVED Mastodon. I said I hadn't really listened to them, and I'll always remember what he said: They are incredibly important for our kind music right now. I bought the first two albums the next day.

Wow I’m late to this video. Great one Andrew! Spot on analysis at the end. To your wondering if he composes his drum parts with room for improvisation on the fills, making it different every show etc.. This is pretty damn note for note with the album, fills and all. He’s gone on to say he’s always played with guitarists growing up so developed a style that constantly follows them instead of a rhythm section so to speak. So it definitely sounds like this on pretty much all their music, which has gotten more mainstream over the years, but becomes more sludgy math Metal when you dive into their early works.
    Take care!

  • @Metalhead0985
    @Metalhead0985 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Brann definitely comps or plays with the guitars and bass. He grew up playing with only guitar players and tried to emulate with fills and such. And he plays live most spot on very few if any changes because of how the fills sit with the giutars

Andrew - PLEASE do yourself a favor and take some time to listen to this album('Leviathan') all the way through, it's a MUST, an incredibly executed concept album(the music fits the story amazingly well).
This is the album that got me 'over the hump' with metal, this is the first one where metal stopped sounding like "they're just putting too many notes in" and I actually started to hear the story being told by the instrumentals & vocals. Following the 'Moby Dick' telling as the album moves along, it's incredible how they translate it into music. Without a doubt, a GOAT prog metal band!

Greetings! Not sure if you’ve caught onto this yourself, but from recent interviews Brann revealed he was reluctantly pushed into singing when they were working on a song that the other vocalists just couldn’t execute to their liking. He gave it a go and then the rest is history. Also, turns out his unique drumming style is due to his beginning stages of learning on his own. Someone eventually revealed to him that he should be in sync with the bassets rather than the guitar. Haha! ✌🏼🖖🏼🤘🏼 (peace, live long and prosper, rock on)

The earlier stuff was a lot heavier, but still had a great deal of musicality and melody. Brann didn't start singing until a few albums in, but he was always actively involved in the songwriting, particular the lyrics. I've never sat down and compared live to the records, but if his drum parts are not verbatim, they're pretty close. The whole band throws in little improvs here and there, but the core still remains. Cheers!
