- February 18, 2024 Afternoon Listening Session --
Listening whilst doing an hour-long GPS RINEX logging, I got some surprising distances on SW. It started with 12,000 kms to New Zealand! Station frequency and time is given for each station in video.
0:22 NZ 12,170 km
0:51 Brazil 10,458 km
1:20 China 8,663 km
2:06 Thailand 11,478 km
2:48 China 10,703 km
3:19 China 9,522 km
3:47 Brazil, music 9,031 km
4:37 Kashi Saibagh, China 9,763 km

Even if we didn't know you were in Alberta, we could geolocate you quite precisely with these data points!
True. But if you could geoguess based on the backpacks, park bench, sun angle at 00:00 UTC, and snow type [!] a la Rainbolt, then I'd be impressed 😂
this is a special radio
It has its drawbacks. Fit and finish leave a lot to be desired when compared to XHDATA and Tecsun. Cost is high. BUT, but it does receive well 😁
Thanks, interesting. Is there "chuffing" when you tune?
It has soft muting. On auto (scan) it goes deaf. On 10Hz or 1Hz tuning changes the radio mutes as well, but only momentarily.
@@RSears thanks for taking the time to reply!
I'm holding out for a new model with SSB mode.
Wouldn't that be sweet. There is so much one could do to improve the SR-286.
@@RSears People more knowledgeable about radio DSP chips than I am claim that it can't support SSB. The fact that the generic TEF6686-based aluminum case radios don't support SSB either is a hint, because these have an open-source firmware. Too bad, because it would be really great and make the steep price of this radio more bearable. It's still a great receiver, which often outperforms some of the best ones like the D-808 or PL-330.
Isn't that interesting. I will have to dig up the data sheet on this chip. Thanks for passing this along. Wouldn't that be sad if this was essentially the end of the progress line?
The chip doesn't support SSB, but that doesn't preclude adding SSB demodulation to a TEF6686/7 radio: th-cam.com/video/qptoMJ4OE7E/w-d-xo.html
@@RSears That's a very interesting reply, thanks.
Where di you buy this? I don't see it on Amazon
True. It was available on aliexpress.com. Worked. Didn't take too long.
Great scan. You'll find this hard to believe, but that is a plastic film over the display that can be removed.
Too funny. Is there anything more triggering for folks than unremoved protective film!
