'To Shiver The Sky’ Available Now
    Listen Now: christophertin.lnk.to/TSTSID
Sung in Polish, 'Astronomy' is a setting of the preface to Nicolaus Copernicus' 'De revolutionibus orbium coelestium' (On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres), the treatise that first posited that the sun, and not the earth, was at the center of the universe. The original Latin was translated and put into poetic meter by Janusz Mrzigod.
The sheet music to 'Astronomy' is published by Boosey and Hawkes, and more information is available at www.christophertin.com/sheetmu.... 'Astronomy' was commissioned by Piotr R. Michalak as a gift to Dorota Michalak.
'Astronomy' is performed by The Assembly, conducted by Dominic Ellis-Peckham, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Christopher Tin. Anna Lapwood plays the organ.

    Lyrics in Polish
    Astronomio, gwiezdna drogo,
    Tyś jest matką wszelkiej wiedzy.
    Choćby człowiek żył ubogo,
    Jego domem kosmos świetny.
    Nic czystszego ponad gwiazdy.
    Sięgaj wyżej, gdy nad sobą
    Przewspaniałe śledzisz
    Widowisko.
    Astronomio, piękne nieba
    Ty poznajesz, masz za swoje.
    Wobec twojej szlachetności
    Bledną ziemskie niepokoje.
    Patrząc w gwiazdy
    widzisz dzieło
    Boże.
    Gwiazdy, księżyc, I planety.

I've been trying to listen to the Christopher Tin channel while signing hospital charts... I keep having to stop and stare at the video, or read through the lyrical poetry, and in general pine for the beauty of this world, as well as the world to come in which God makes my job unnecessary and obsolete.
Thank you Maestro, for your generous gift of illumination.

I love the darker note at 6:35, reminding us that the work of Copernicus got criticized and rejected during his lifetime, but ends with a more hopeful tone, for he was in the right all along and got ultimately celebrated.

Okay, my friend, with the normal sized head that fits an extremely oversized brain in it to be able to put something like this together!!! This is just amazing! The music is absolutely heavenly, and to be able to watch the score come together with all the moving parts, then the constellations appear, is just awesome. I don't know how you do this, but so thankful that I get to do the easy part and watch and listen. LOL Best wishes to you, Chris, and your continued catapult past the greatest composers ever. :-))))))))))))))

I feel a bit late for the party, but this was a triple moment. First listening of this glorious music, then taken in by the sublime animation, which took me further into the score, and just when I had settled into that warm blanket, I found myself outside, under the stars. That transformation was just sublime. Now on second time around and loving it more. Thanks

This is my absolute favorite piece of To Shiver the Sky. It's breathtaking, for such a quiet piece, that there's so much depth and complexity with all the instruments and when they come in and all the unique notes they add to this beautiful tapestry of music. Reminds me a lot of the night sky, each little star, planet, and galaxy twinkling and contributing toward the beauty that we as humans get to enjoy for free! And the lyrics and meaning of the song come full circle. Thank you, Chris -- you've done it!

This came up today on my phone while I was pulling out of the Sonic after taking the kids to happy hour for slushies. It must have been the 50th time I've heard the song, and today I thought I was going to weep. It was just before the choir comes in. Maybe around 1 minute. I always loved it, but something about today. It felt new.
Thanks for this song and for your albums.

  • @EternalNation765

The organ at the start of the piece paints an image of sitting in a cathedral on a cloudy evening for an evensong mass, when the light is low but for candles and the soft periwinkle blue light coming through windows that stained glass. As the orchestra and choir begin Copernicus’ ode, much as the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor segment in Disney’s Fantasia illustrates, the sheer power of the music takes you away from wherever you may be and into your imagination: swirling galaxies, shimmering stars, planets and celestial phenomena, great and small.
I would personally dub this a celestial cantata: a piece that in all instruments and voices sings about the sacred beauty of the heavens beyond our little blue planet.
It speaks to my near-lifelong love of stars and has made itself my favorite piece from To Shiver the Sky; truly stellar!

but then right as i finished that thought, the vocals came in
which, im probably the only one, or at least one of few who got to experience and appreciate that timing, but it was a really nice touch
and then the decision to have constellations in the sheet music, absolute genius

Love this piece! Admittedly, I didn't think I'd like it, but it's not only relaxing but also quite musically interesting in my opinion. I have a question about the score though. Why is it written with accidentals in-score rather than with a key signature? I do notice a lot of tonicization going on, so maybe that's why. Or perhaps being a conductor's score it doesn't need a key signature? I really don't know enough about this haha. Keep up the great work!

    • @christophertin
      @christophertin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

That's a stylistic thing that we who tend to work in film/video games do. When you're in a recording session, it's a lot easier for players to sight read if there aren't key signatures. This piece would have been perfect for a key signature, true, but I like to be consistent and simply don't use them anywhere.

Absolutely beautiful as a whole. The revelation of the Pheonix was brilliantly placed. I also noticed that the constellations all fit with the theme of flight, even the ones that are only named ie Grus (the crane) and Corvus (the crow). Is there a translation of the words available? I don't even know which language it is.

@@christophertin this piece ticks all of my geek boxes. Apart from being beautiful, I am a musician so I loved the score unfolding, I am into science and am an amateur astronomer and took time in my youth to learn all of the constellations so to see them being revealed was WOW. I love thematic albums Alan Parsons is one of my favourites so to see the constellations revealed as all flying creatures (in line with your theme of flight) with no bears, serpents, dogs or scorpions and be able to recognise the arrangements of stars (even the ones only named) and see that the stars were the NOTES on the score had me over the moon so to speak.
