  • A Discussion and Deep Dive into Richard Mille Watches. It's a name that enthusiasts often criticise, but should it not also deserve some respect? The brand is extremely successful partly because of how RM found an opportunity to create bespoke watches for the 1% of collectors. It has one of the most successful partnerships shared with Athletes and continues to be a name that makes headlines. The question we can ask is: Will this popularity last?

I remember when I first saw the name Richard Mille was on the side of formula one cars, initially I wondered what it was all about, a bunch of drivers that strangely all had the same name. Joking aside until some geezer hit a tennis ball at a watch I didn't really know anything about the name. Many years later knowing what these watches are I can appreciate the strides the brand made to develop mechanical watches in a way that pushes the engineering extremes. The brilliant marketing strategy targeting high profile sports people has also permitted the brand to push on with very expensive development while delivering a limited number of pieces. For that they can be applauded. An income stream from the very well off people finances the development and with (anti) social media jumping on every bandwagon pulls in the as you say 'I want what is unavailable to the every day Joe Soap' and show it off as a status symbol driving up the used market for a bunch of wannabee owners lusting for the same.

I can imagine the people who like Richard Mille also like Hublot.

Seems like a very expensive fashion watch.

The heavy use of colors (especially the primary colors: red, yellow, and blue or green) seem to shout that they are intended to interest children, and so to me - they appear to be mere toys.

Great out take ending to a well thought out RM analysis.

I’m glad that so many people are enthusiastic about the brand and if it brings them joy, then that’s great…but aesthetically, for me, I don’t quite understand the look, size, and scrunchy material straps…and I agree, that it in the near future, these may look like parachute pants or acid wash jeans from the 80’s - a must have then - but not sure, I could envision a scene where a young man thoughtfully looks up to his grandfather and aspires to be able to own a similar pair of ‘sport trousers’ 🤔 can you imagine the Patek tag line replaced by RM? You never really own an [RM], you merely look after it for the next generation??? I’m not sure I could… instead, I think, this is a game of “hot potato” or “musical chairs” and personally, I wouldn’t want to be the one who paid gray market prices, when the music stops.

Great overview of the RM phenomenon. What comes to mind for me as I see the pieces, prices and who is buying them is the "Emperor's new clothes". And no grandpa Jones won't be rocking a RM in his rocker.

I like to say that what you are paying for in high horology is time. Time the watchmaker used to carefully craft the watch, to polish and finish the case and movement, to make the dial and hands etc (in addition to deveoping the movement in the first place).

Love the brand and the unique look. The classic watch shape (circle) and the Cartier square models I’m not a fan of. The tonneau shape is classic and timeless. Not sure if this is the next FM but it just might be, which would be great since it will be more in my price range

Any truth these watches are the preferred choice for money launders? Great video, as always!

Great video - fascinating in this video next to Adrian's video on Hublot (got to say this is far superior). Love your coverage but I think you opened interesting questions around art/design the purpose of a watch (jewelry vs tool), the balance between timelessness and genericism, challenge vs comfort, satisfying the many vs just trying to reach a select few.

Awesome video. Very honest. You cracked me up with your ending. I have seen a few in person and they kinda look like toys! They don't exactly look like serious watches and they're not made for suit and ties either. They're just this fad, status symbol nonsense. But I do like the use of exotic materials and the innovations.

Regardless of any perceived innovative qualities their watches may have, their design aesthetic makes RM the Franck Muller of today. That is, they are popular amongst trend obsessed non-enthusiasts and their designs are in no way timeless, meaning that their appeal will inevitably fade and disappear within five to ten years.

The good thing about RM is that I will never cry about not being able to get one at retail. I'm sure their movements are high end but I will never find the design desirable.
