      Not as of this moment. Guohe is SUPPOSED to be releasing a new binary in the coming days. I pulled down my last update last month, giving them time to fix things as promised. That means if it is not released in the coming 3-4 days I am re-releasing my last one and also making a new one. I would much rather the new video be positive and include good and helpful updates. If the Guohe games continue, I will be quite honest and they will be very unhappy.

    • @brianc0620
      @brianc0620  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Russell.
      Not much to be honest.
      They fixed the software that makes it stable. So it doesn’t crash immediately thankfully.
      That said, DMR is now working (simplex mode)
      Power is a bit of a mess. Especially in upper VHF and UHF. The power settings basically do nothing. You have one set amount or transmission power.
      Funny thing is that that exact same power settings are different in the other 119. They gave different TX power results.
      So once again, no consistency.
      Long story short, while the radios are somewhat functioning now, I will not as of right now, in good conscience, recommend them for purchase. Until these things function as promised and advertised, and are consistently doing so, I will not promote them. I am still holding out hope against Hope.

      I heard they'd blacklisted you? If they're changing tact that's good to hear although still very off putting for them to have done it in the first place. Very disappointing this radio doesn't use standard milspec plugs for everything like antenna, 6-pin headset port, etc. Sounds like they should do a refresh with a major overhaul. @@brianc0620

    How safe are modern ham radios from hacking?

    • @brianc0620
      @brianc0620  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Interesting question. Here is my opinion on that.
      In general I would say “they are safe”. Ham radios are generally safe from hackers, with respect to some POS hacker trying to mess with you, your equipment or trying to gain access to your PII via your Ham radio.
      There is little for them to gain, communication TX methods tend to be painful slow (for hacking purposes) and thus very hard to exfiltrate anything obtained through the hack. So that covers the inbound hack.
      Now another angle would be, can radios such as SDR be utilized offensively to hack wireless devices, YES! Just check out a HackRF SDR device with a computer or Raspberry PI.

    hello, I had a question about the DMR encryption. Is it clear what algorithm is used? Is it AES 256 that would be compatible with other HT's on the market, or is it a proprietary encryption method where you would need multiples of the same radio?

    • @brianc0620
      @brianc0620  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It is a proprietary algorithm owned by Guohe. Nothing to do with AES to the best of my knowledge. It is a key that is issued based on your radio serial number. You will need a key pair for a similar radio. Each key is ~$320 per.
      Any digital transmission that is using this key will not be able to communicate with any equipment that is not made by Guohe.

    Did you ever try the original HF Antenna on Qso and did you add radials / counterpoise?
    I'm asking to get a feeling if it will work just putting out of the bag pack on a Sota or Pota reference and use it without a preparation of the area with much wire. TU vy 73 de Oe1rof

    • @brianc0620
      @brianc0620  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello sir. I have performed QSO on HF with the 119 using the OEM 3m long whip antenna. About 15 mile range and it worked well. I did not use radials or counterpoise, just a ground stake.
      Other than that I have used a dipole and it worked well too.
      That said, I was testing 40m on an NVIS wire antenna this past weekend and it was unintelligible. Robotic. I am still troubleshooting that.

    Hello There, AMATEUR Ham Technician here, I was interested in this radio but I'm not seeing a lot of information, and from the sellers, they keep mentioning something about a "Key"? for $300. Can you speak to that or do you only need that for if you want your data encrypted for whatever reason and is not necessary? Can you program channels into this radio? Any Help would be greatly appreciated as I don't have the funds to find things like this out the hard way, which is keeping me from fully exploring the HAM world.

    • @brianc0620
      @brianc0620  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You only need to pay the $300 fee for an encryption key if you are using DMR and are going to encrypt your transmission (you’re going to actually need a pair of keys, one for a second radio too, so $600). If you don’t want to encrypt the communication then you can ignore that item. The radio comes with DMR functioning as is with no additional fees for keys or licenses required .
      Channel programming is possible currently via manually punching in the frequency and channel name into the radio itself. The software that comes with the radio, while it has this option, it does not work. Additionally, the manual program in of channels is problematic as that part of the software is buggy and will overwrite the entry with jibberish. They are working to fix that.

    • @brianc0620
      @brianc0620  ปีที่แล้ว

      They have fixed the channel programming function, it correctly stores all entries. They also released a Chirp type interface to computer-program the channels into the radio.

    • @brianc0620
      @brianc0620  ปีที่แล้ว

      The good news is that they now include the data cable or will send on if requested through the vendor that sent it to you.
      The dongle that I made for the H250 works well with the exception that when transmitting in NFM for some technical reason, I need to use the original handset.

    • @brianc0620
      @brianc0620  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ericschuh4330 you can request the Data update cable from the vendor that you purchased the radio from. Guohe will send it to them.
      That said, the latest version is 3.4.0.
      It fixed one issue but my DMR does not function correctly now and WFM is is transmitting less that 1W on UHF.
      So with Guohe, it’s two steps forward, one step back.
      My advice is to do a baseline of what works and what doesn’t. So after you eventually upgrade, you know where you were. They are hard to deal with to be quite honest. The guys with the Q900 are straight up loosing their mind. There are many more of them than us 119 owners.
      Guohe will do themselves out of business if they keep up this break/fix drama.
      Side note: One positive of having the data update cable is that you can run a keyboard directly into the radio for CW and RTTY. CW is literally just type and it instantly transmits. They actually ship the radio now with both cables. Once you get it, plug in the usb dongle with the FW Update Bin on it, hold down the power button for a few seconds and it will start the upload automatically. It will just click once (the power up relays, you normally hear a series of like 4 clicks from the relays).

    Is it possible to do DMR only on UHF and VHF?

    • @brianc0620
      @brianc0620  ปีที่แล้ว

      I can confirm It does TX in DMR mode outside of VHF and UHF.
      I was able to check that TX was occurring against a SDR. I have no other dedicated DMR radios that can RX in a lower frequency than VHF/UHF, so the observation was not 100% other than TX was occurring and it sounded the same on SDR as the upper bands.
