Truestories, since you are covering a band that covered a Johnny Cash song, can you make a video on what made Johnny Cash do covers on Depeche Mode, Soundgarden and others?
Plus, yes, I know you already did a video on Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt".

I just seen them the other day in Pittsburgh. I question if Mike really beat cancer, or he said fuck it, if im gonna die, im gonna go out doing what i love to do. Joey Ramone kept quiet about his cancer issue. Either way the older we all get, the more this music slowly disappears. Glad alot of them are still hanging on and keeping it alive as long as they can.

Mommy's Little Monster was my favorite album way back when Mike moved in next door to me in Huntington Beach. I was thrilled to say the least. We hung out in his down time before he got sober - sharing meals and stories. We even worked out some progressions on songs that ended up on Prison Bound. He said I played well but that I was too metal (my early Ritchie Blackmore and Iron Maiden influences always intruded). He was like a big brother for a bit, rightfully telling me that some of the punks I hung with were bad news. I eventually took his advice and cut them loose. In some ways it was it was a case of "Don't meet your heroes" because the mystique could never match reality. God forbid he be human, right? He was and is a solid human being. I wish him well.

Thanks for this! I was a little late to the game- I was more into hardcore hip hop/rap in the late 80's and early 90's, but loved some metal and hard rock too (as well as country- I'm all over the place...). I remember hearing their cover of Ring of Fire, and then seeing the videos for Bad Luck and Ball and Chain in '92, and was hooked. Just their sound and how they melded genres, and their whole sorta retro aesthetic. Just the definition of cool in my mind. I bought a few CD's and have been a super fan since. I fucking love them! I finally saw them play about 10 years ago- such a great show. I bought tix again last year, which was sidelined since Mike was battling cancer. Now I'm hyped because he is healing, and I'll get to see them play TWICE this year (once in May in Charleston, and again this fall for last year's postponed show up in VA Beach). Long live SxDx!! (Side note- Bruce Springsteen said "Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell" was his favorite album that year)

I caught them about a half dozen times over the years, from Boston to San Francisco. Never saw a bad show, because they killed it every time. And they often had bad ass opening bands that just set their shows apart right out of the gate.
I spent most of my early teenage years on being a huge fan of Social D. And all these years later, the right song can pull me right back to where I was when I first heard it, or a strong memory from hearing it again while doing something important. They're one of those "once in a generation" bands as far as I'm concerned.

A friend and I went backstage after the show but unfortunately Mike Ness had left right after the concert to see the doctor as he had strained his vocal cords during the show. Never got to meet him but we saw the only Vegas show that tour as he had to cancel the remaining Vegas gigs due to throat issues.

A while back, Mike Ness was leasing an industrial unit in the Fullerton complex
    I was a tenant also.
I had casual conversation with Mike a few times. He’s a really down to earth guy.
I wish I had witnessed to Mike about
incidents involving Jesus Christ that I
had experienced in that very industrial building complex.
I regret opportunities I have not taken.
Nobody needs to spend eternity, existing in a
    terrifying state of regret.
I don’t know what The Lord is doing with Mike. I should’ve asked.
I have been privileged by The Lord to
    witness several of His Interventions.
I should’ve spoken up, instead of being
    silent.
I Suppose I’m shy about declaring that
am solidly a believer in Christ Jesus. Folks
are quick to mock Believers in Christ.

My first taste of SD was in the early 90s after getting on the guest list through WNYU for their gig at CBGBs, I was hooked for life. I was too young to get into punk during NYCs scene, rather I got into it after metal became hair metal and I couldnt relate to my heros looking like girls. I found the rawness in punk and started backtracking. At my place in time I was a hybrid in my musical appreciation and did not get stuck being within the lines of one genre, especially growing up in the NYC boroughs. It was NYCs creative peak, punk, rap, house music, thrash started its rise and I got into that in a huge way with Metallicas And Justice For All. Im lucky to have come up in this period and SD being part of my mix.

It's true - their early-90s successes made them look like a part of the Alternative-movement.
From my perspective, it was "White Light...", with its often Bad-Religion-like melodies, that brought them into the consciousness of the 90s-Punk-crowd.
And the follow-up would ride high on the Greaser-/Punk'n'Roll-movement from the turn of the century... Which closes the circle and shows that they became one of the few acts that everyone can agree on.

What blew me away was hearing the description of the band as "like if Nirvana met Garth Brooks". Like, how are you going to write as a music critic, and not know what the hell rockabilly was? Social D wasn't even the only rockabilly influenced band around even at that time, they were just doing it better than everyone else. How the hell does a music critic not know any of that?
I saw Social D at the Warfield in San Francisco years back with Tiger Army opening. It was before Tiger went full-on psychobilly, so it was a great show front to back.

Mike was ahead of his time. We weren't friends but knew alot of same people. Got in a fight not by choice but he ended up with broken nose, nobody bit his ear but it was messed up from asphalt. We left as cops pulled up i believe he went to jail. I moved to Central Coast Ca 2001 he lived in Morro Bay then I think. Did tile at his mother inlaws house he was supposed to come by and have a beer days end but never saw him. His success was self made all his songs about where he grew up and how tough it was being punk are absolutely true. His music to this day is timeless. He earned every bit of his success. Got to see him in concert in Paso Robles several years ago and he rocked it.

Opened up with my band for SD in 96 (?) Dennis was the sweetest person I ever met. Got to play Mike's guitar cos we were full on about Les Paul Deluxes. We both had one so we swapped guitars back and forth during soundcheck. His one was better. Drummer called out and said something like: 'it's a soundcheck but there's a bunch of kids on the stage'. Mike gave me back my Les Paul and asked the bass guy: 'does the smell bothers you too?' Classic. I use that line to this day...
