The only thing I hated about being a DA was whenever I went to work with a new doctor, they expected me to know what they wanted and how they wanted it on the very first try, without even bothering to tell me how they liked things. Every dentist works differently, has a different style, and it takes time to learn their movements and their personal flow. Yet explaining this to most dentists is like talking to a brick wall.

    • @Geminitwins247
      @Geminitwins247 5 ปีที่แล้ว +64

Agreed, in the office I work for we have an oral surgeon come in every few months or so and at first I thought I would be able to get his flow but unfortunately I haven't been able to grasp his way of working. I'm to use to the way my dentist works and the way she does things. Luckily for me I think the dentist I work for sees that and decides to chair side assist him when he comes in.

      Omg Ik!!!
When I started working with a new doctor I didn't know he wanted me to do the cleaning after put the crown (like cleaning the remains of the cement)
And so he want to the other room to see another patient and I didn't know what to do, cus the patient was waiting with his fricking mouth open with remains of the glue and the cement, when I told the doctor we didn't finish with him yet he rolled his eyes at me, and said very loudly (in front of the patient!) What don't you understand clean the rest, you are wasting my time...
And I was like : fuck, he is gonna be very fun to work with😑

It’s absolutely ridiculous how hard we as assistants work out of everyone else in the practice and yet we are paid the lowest. Between maintenance, ordering supplies, preparing lab cases, sterilization, disinfection of rooms and surface areas, we hardly get what others receive as a full break or lunchtime. Constantly trying to get setups, rooms and patients cared for and yet we are the ones disrespected patients, staff and cheap dentists. During these times of pandemic we are highly at risk of an exposure and yet we continue our roles and duties as health care providers to provide patients with proper treatment and oral health education. Dental assistants deserve more respect, higher pay and benefits just as much as others receive in the oral healthcare field. Without assistants there would be no dental practice.

@@jodieton3630 We do provide! Everything!!! From making sure the instruments are sterilization to checking the patient's medical history so they're not given epi if they have a heart issue!! No one wants to be on the front line of the #1 most dangerous job there is in this pandemic. Doctors don't know anything about sterilization protocol let alone breaking down a opertorary and set up. Most don't know where anything is!! Why do hygienist have a national group and assistant don't. Why aren't we organized. Why aren't we unionized? We have been abused, monetarily, emotionally and in some cases physically!! We hold the cards now ladies. Let's empower ourselves!!

Months before deciding to enroll into DA school, I searched for a video that actually showed “A day in the life of a DA”, & not just a “sit down vlog” without an actual visual insight of what to actually except! As a DA student, I can say that your video is spot on! Great video this really gives aspiring DAs a huge glimpse into the DAs job description.

@@amydumas573 No, I won't say i've been messed treated working as a dental assistant. But I will admit the pay isn't very good. Lucky for me the dentist I worked for was very kind and friendly. A very good employer to which I was sad that I had to leave. I already have a bachelor degree so I wouldn't say I messed up. Also the dental hygiene programs in my area are very tough to get into cause there are only a few. For me, i've decided to try to make use of my degree and find a decent paying job hopefully with benefits. That is another thing with the dental field. It can be tough to get full benefits. But yeah Lucky for me I had a good experience working as a dental assistant.

Great job on making this video! I'm one of the very few male dental assistants. I've worked as a DA for more than 8 years. I enjoy the work itself, but the dentist you work for makes all the difference. I've had my share of working with verbally abusive dentists. That feeling of dread of coming to work in the morning is the worst, all because of the dentist.

Way to much duties on one person, not to mention no breaks in between patients. Your honestly lucky if you even get a lunch or time to drink water. You literally have to cut yourself in 3 to get everything done. It's impossible for one person to tray set, get the room ready, sterilize, assist dentint, and handle the front desk all at once. This is the main reason why everyone that graduates as a DA doesn't stay long in the practice long

I’ve been a dental assistant for 3 years and I love it!!!! The excitement of all the different things I can do ! To a extraction , filling , making dentures even implants.. it’s all repetition. Once you get the hang of it it’s all easy and fun ! Yea there’s tiring ass days and not only do you deal with mean patients like most ppl do in the health field .. you always gotta deal with dental anxiety ! To comfort someone and educate them and to help them reach their goals is satisfying . Also yes it’s very true that a lot of the dentist are mean the first office I worked at I had a very asshole of a Dr. to work with but now i moved onto a office and love the Dr. I work with!! One day I would love to go back to school to become a hygienist to further my dental career !

The roles of a dental assistant are similar yet so different from a dental nurse. Its weird to think you all help each other out so much and can flow so we'll. We have to see 15-25 patients in the morning and again in the afternoon and half are emergencies. It's great you all work as a team as we have to do all this on our own. I work in a 7 surgery practice so we get through a lot of patients each day as every surgery is running.

I’m a dental technician and I’ve had the opportunity to experience this role as part of my national service. For me it’s been an okay experience. The downside for me is the long hours on your feet and the workload. Also you’d have to deal with very disrespectful doctors who don’t appreciate the effort you put in place to keep the surgery running at all times. I don’t like the job because it offers no career progression. I got a degree in Dental Laboratory Sciences and somehow learnt the nurse role in a week so for me it’s not a special job and it doesn’t even pay as much considering how stressful it is. Highly wouldn’t recommend 🥴

Now I am employed and after ten years it’s kind of all new to me again, the staffs are great and supportive but I am nervous because they said they would train me for another week, I’ve taken training for four days from last month , kind of nervous Will I be ok with it? Are there any specific questions that I need to ask the dentist? Definitely I love what I am doing, just wondering if there are any tips that might help me overcome my fear as I’m very nervous all the time but I’m trying my best. Once again #Truth, it is a total shit show... the profession doesn't get the respect and appreciation it deserves... I literally was just offered a job for a position at an office I temped.. I did not even apply for the perm job.. I believe bc the applicants were not showing up bc the office is so toxic... all the workers look miserable and I hated temping there myself... dentists there are so entitled and disrespectful. I can't blame them for feeling miserable. But yeah they offered me the job and I told the office manager the dentist I worked with spoke to me in a condescending way, she debated with me... I told her people naturally do not want to go places or be around ppl who talk down to them. It is honestly such a shit job based on who you work with and how they treat you.

I just started watching some of your videos I'm only 16 but I'm kind of interested in the career. But I'm very very indecisive. This is because I really really do not want to go to college. I don't mind doing a technical school or something like that for maybe two years but yeah. But really thank you for these videos even though I'm like a year late watching them it's helping me to see what I want to do.

Oh noooo! It becomes second nature once you get the hang of it! But, yes, jobs in the dental field = nonstop motion!!! :)

I worked as a DA for almost 20 years and wish I was in a office like this. Need to talk about the craziness and politics in the clinics.
