- Whats up guys, I’m student Dr. Thompson and I’m a 4th year medical student. I can not believe I’m making this video!! I started this channel introducing myself as a first year medical student and it really doesn’t seem like enough time has passed. So good news is, medical school might go fast for you guys too!
In this video i talk about some of the major events that take place in my and all 4th year medical students lives. So I hope you enjoy and thanks for watching!
I picked up my phone and wondered to myself, "student doctor hasn't posted a video lately" and what you know. When I opened TH-cam there you are. Your videos are a great help me. I want to go to school for an MD/PhD which is slightly different, but the end goal is to help people who are sick. Thanks for the videos.
Josh Alvarado awesome comment!
You're journey has just become more personal to me since I am hoping to become an anesthesiologist when I head into med school.
Dude! I've been waiting for an update for soo long! I'm currently applying to MD/DO schools and re-watching all your videos always gets me excited. For more than a year, I actually thought you would want to do peds because your such an awesome dad and father and always thought your attitude would math well with that field. But, whatever you choose to do, you're going to do great. I'm praying for you and your beautiful family!
How'd it go?
OH MY GOSH IT'S STUDENT DOCTOR THOMPSON! So excited you posted again! Great to see you back on youtube again :-)
Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to load this very informative video. Keep it up. You are almost there...
Paule-Ines Beugre You are welcome, and it is a way for me to collect my thoughts so I really enjoy it, thanks for the support!
This has been another great video. Your video's offer great advice and guidance that I really appreciate. Thank's for doing what you do.
I definitely need to keep your advice in mind when my fourth year comes around! :) Thanks for sharing!!
I've been waiting to see your smile :) and the very valuable information you have to give. Thank you so much!
Keep on keepin' on!!! You are an inspiration!
JustmeKasie will do! thanks for the vote of confidence!
Chris!!! I love seeing your smiling face in my inbox! wow now THAT is a sign if thee ever was one to pursue anesthesiology! I am about to start my senior year of undergrad next week and am working on AMCAS and AACOMAS as I write this! This personal statement and character limit will be the end of me I swear! I understand what you mean about the uncertainty and stress that accompany 4th year bc that's a whole lot of what I'm feeling!! My MCAT score is definately not the highest (studying to take it a second time in Sep and that's an entire other beast!!l but other than that I feel like I have a decent application BUT the MCAT is the largest factor essentially so I really don't know :/ :( ahhhhhhhhhhh growing up!
ladycavie94 good luck!!!
ladycavie94 oh man, I know exactly how you feel, It seems like I stressed over every detail of the application process, and not knowing what will come of it is the perfect recipe for an anxiety attack! Good luck taking the MCAT over again, a good friend of mine ended up doing that and his score went up significantly! So yours will too! Study hard my friend
Where are you now? I'm curious! I'm in my first year of undergrad haha.
So happy to see another video from you! I k ow it must be difficult with the workload of 3rd and 4th year. But happy you find the time for us! :) thanks again and good luck!
thekcski you are welcome, I wish I made more, my phone has dozens of thoughts I wanted to share on here but couldn't so hopefully one day I will find the time
CS is scheduled, studying for CK at the same time. time's tickin. love your videos... keep em comin!
seeing your smiling face was great!!
Hi I'm an Italian med student. Here we do not have college and after high school (5 years) we go straight to med school (6 years). Now I'm going to start my last year of med school too! (I hope) Good luck for your career!
Stefano Agnolin how did it go?
Harambe I graduated last year and I've just passed state exame, which allows me to practice medicine in Italy and Europe. I'm waiting for medical residency test. It is similar to match day, but I have to pass another written exams in order to start residency. how are you?
Great video! It is interesting how different medical schools are. I went through it in Germany and it is not half as complicated and not as expensive as in the US. After graduating from HS you go right ahead to medical school, no pe-med and stuff. Getting accepted is the only big deal since you need to have a GPA of 4.0 otherwise you might have to wait for 7 years without attending any school at all in that time. Medical school takes 6 years including one year of internship at the end. You need to pass 3 board exams during those 6 years. First one after 2 years, second after 5 and the last one at the end of year 6. After that you apply for your residency and that is pretty easy and in no why as stressful as it sounds like in your video. No one would ever end up with a specialty they did not chose. Since we do not have to pay tuition fees, all we need is books, patience and commitment once we got accepted to medical school. Good luck!
SilkandButterflies crazy how different things are! But very interesting, a GPA of 4.0 would be tough
Ich studiere auch Medizin in Deutschland (ich fange eigentlich in zwei Wochen an)
hast du irgendeinen Ratschlag für mich? Ich würde mich auf ihre Antwort freuen.
+Good Man Privatleben hinten anstellen. Viel Erfolg!
+Student Doctor Thompson Yes, indeed! But on second thought, it is totally worth the study time you committed to in HS for the 4.0 in order to not having any debts after graduating Medical School, right? Well, at least in my opinion.
+SilkandButterflies Danke für den Ratschlag! An welcher Uni hast du studiert? Ich studiere in Bonn.
Congrats! I'm sure you're on your way to becoming a great DO!
NerdyNutrition Hey thanks!
I'm about to start my pre-med classes, and I've already decided to do anestesia, it'll be tough, but it's what I've always wanted to do. Thanks for the info man!
I'm glad u still make videos :) love them
Brianna Life thanks! I'll keep making them when I get some spare time
It also seems nice cause you get to focus on one case at a time.
How did you and your spouse decide to arrange living situations during your away rotations? Did she and your children live with family? Or go along with you to your audition rotations?
I've met a few anesthesiologists that aren't super keen on their specialty. Many like the lifestyle and compensation, but I met one that said it can be monotonous that he might have chosen a different speciality. Best of luck on your pursuit though!
Great insight. Thanks!
I love your videos. ...I actually was scared of med. school I mean really scared but now I am going to med. school thanks to u 😶
I think med school in the US is different in my country, the Philippines. I'm a 4th year med student also, but we're not allowed to take board exam until we graduated, but before taking the board exam, we have to take 1 year internship. So all in all, 5 years before taking the board exam. And after that, that's when we apply for residency.
So what as was the reason the family doc said he was unhappy???
I think in your case the specialty chose you , which is nice , and a great story to tell When you are asked why you became an anesthesiologist 😊😊 anyways, good luck wish you all the best !
aewsome video!
I do not know what to choose: general surgery or pedi attic
Could you not do a general surgery residency and a fellowship in pediatrics?
I wish you could make more videos! :( I love them and I hope you haven't left TH-cam.
Usually deans of the medical school will help you contact. It's not all of your own, at least at some schools its not.
there are so many programs, every program has different timing for when you can apply for 4th year rotation, and the start dates are variable. so how did you go about picking where you'll rotate and how did you go about scheduling them? any feedback is appreciated, thanks!
I just finished my first week of 1st year of medical school. 4th year seems worlds away. Haha
amberbuttersz Congratulations! A lot of orientation and getting to know the professors, I remember my first week, good times. I know it seems far away looking forward though, no worries, you'll have plenty to do to make time fly! good luck!
+Student Doctor Thompson Hi doc. So if now you are 30 years old and you are 4th year in med school. At what age did you start journy to become a doctor. I'm 25years now and I found my passion to become a doctor. At what age I will become a doctor if I started at 26 years old ?
+Ahmed Alqattan I'm pretty sure in most (if not all) med schools in the US requires you to take the pre-reqs. I.e: biochemistry, organic chemistry, psychology etc. (Pretty much bachelors on Pre-med) and that should take about 4 years and then you'd take you MCAT, then based on your score on MCAT, you'd attend a med school that is willing to take you and that's 4 years. Then you have your 4-6 years of residency. But to become a MD, it would take you 8 years. So if you start at 26, you'll be 34 by the time you graduate medical school and cam technically call your self a doctor in the US, but you won't necessarily be able to practice until after your residency. Good luck!
+VirtualBubbles Thank you ⚘
This guy is smart he is probably making a decent amount of money of these videos to pay for med school. But nonetheless good videos man! I'm only in grade 10 but these videos give me alot of insight into my future.
Hey Dr. Thompson,
I am a canadian resident and I am planning on going to the caribbean for medical school next septemeber. Can you please give me your advice on this? or your opinion.
Anesthesiologist is what I've always wanted to become!
Unfortunately, most physicians are unhappy with their specialty choice. According to the Medscape Physician Compensation report, only 49% of the Anesthesiologists would choose that same specialty - overall, only 45% of all physicians would choose the same specialty! BUT - it's really not a physician thing either - if you look at the US workforce, about the same percentage of all workers are unhappy! It's a cultural thing :(
I've just failed 4th year :( I'm gutted
Sooooo choosing a specialty is like being a kid in the candy shop
Do you think I should pursue the medical path if I struggle in chemistry?
Yes
Kai Jordan My best friend got all C's in chemistry, went to medical school (he was asked why his grades were low in chemistry, so have a good answer I guess) but then he went on to rock med school and do really well on his boards, so don't be discouraged and press on my friend
Yes! You can major in anything. It's okay if you struggle in chemistry. Chemical proficiency is not the only thing that makes a good doctor.
I'm surprised, I thought you would have gone for a surgical specialty!
skipyjohnjones my brother did, and I actually love surgery, but anesthesia just feels right, stay tuned though, a lot can happen in the next several months, I'll keep you all posted
How old are you?
Do you worry about what they say that CRNA's are taking over anesthesiologist jobs?
+Sergio P I don't think so.... CRNA's don't want the same level of responsibility that an anesthesiologist has.
CRNA's have the same responsibility that an anesthesiologist has FYI.
No they don't
i will make a video like you but i never share them. they only keep with me
Şeyma Bayram you never know who might appreciate them :)
+Student Doctor Thompson Which country do you study in ?
Neurosurgery ftw!
Hi I'm an italian
Aren't you concerned about CRNA's taking all your jobs? I would hate to go thru residency and then not get a job.
Yeah because nurses will make Doctors lose their jobs lmao...
They don’t do the same job. What an ignorant comment. My sister is a CRNA. They don’t have the same training. Wow. Inform yourself.
I knew something was off with this guy. He must have a lot of money. He seems kinda weird. What average American would take the risk of going to med school and going through all that hard work without having a clue about what field you wanted to go into? That seems kind of radical....tbh I was a neurosci major and didn't know what I wanted to research by the time I graduated and had the desire to do a PhD. But this is kind of different...more money, more intensive courses....and you have to interview to convince the faculty that you're ready for this...
