The great debate about football GOAT'S ... I used to think that Messi had to win the WC to be classed in the same bracket as Maradona (who in my generation is the GOAT) .. maybe i still do but .. Messi is more than a striker or a false 9.. I ve seen him pick the ball up in the DM position and prompt things, play one-two's make his way upfield and finish the move that HE started.. I find it hard to put a p[layer like that into a bracket of any kind.. His presence at Barca allied to the Cryuff 'total' football concept is a marriage made in heaven.. The concept of 'total' football is that EVERY play should be comfortable in EVERY position.. not just his natural one.. Messi is a footballing anomaly.. Quite extraordinary
My point was that , as a modern day player, he is capable of picking up the ball in almost any position on the pitch and prompting an attack, usually with a mazy dribble and a few one-two's .. Not saying that he could play a a defender, per say, i also agree with ur top 3 just disagree on the order slightly
Football Hub The reason why I rate Maradona so highly is because he twice almost singlehandedly dragged Argentina to WC finals.. especially in 1990... Not to mention what he did with Napoli. . Pele is the Patriarch no doubt but he played with Garrincha, Carlos Alberto, Jairzinho etc.. WC players in their own right. . He didn't necessarily carry the team. . I'll never cease to be impressed with Diego. . Ur right about the longevity though
Football Hub it was not a below average Napoli . And messi is the epitome of consistency he usually fails in 1 or 2 games the entire season and he is not the player he once was . It's easily evident when messi plays, then Argentina are good or they r so disoriented . It's the same with Barcelona . For me he will be the greatest of all time.

I would say country/world cup teams used to have a lot of significance, but there are some countries who don't have the capacity to make that happen, and then there those who just don't care. I think Argentina cares, but with the economic crisis they have been suffering for the last 20 years it does not seem to be a priority nor should it, and you can probably say the same about Brazil. They will continue to produce stars but for them to push for an above average World Cup team doesn't seem to be in the stars atm. You also have to think, it is pretty hard to get all the way to the semi finals today, you have players playing year round, and they are now playing all over the world. IMO the European players going forward are always going to be at the advantage since they are going to play in their country professionally or one country over, which is going to be a short plane ride home and give them more opportunities to play and visit with their country team. 18 years since Brazil has played in final, and they won. 2014 since Argentina and would that team have ever gotten to the final without Messi? Can Messi bring home the cup next year, a bad bounce here and there and a player or two not injured, it could happen, but I would probably bet on Belgium. I also believe Messi has been transitioning to different positions over the last 3-5 years based upon what has been his team needs and it looks like he will drop to the CAM, which will be just as much a problem as him playing the false 9 imo.

As much of a great playmaker he is, & knowing a lot about football, it absolutely angers me when Messi receives the ball around half field. yes he can provide great through balls but the odds are against a good defensive side like Liverpool or Atletico Madrid aren’t high. You can’t expect messi to hit a 30 yard diagonal pass (which he can do but not the point) every game.
A bit of a late reply but it's about options my friend. For messi to take charge further ahead as opposed to further back he would need a secondary playmaker (like inesta or xavi). The absence of these guys has left messi almost crippled because there is nobody who can match upto him. So messi makes the necessary sacrifice to let suarez take his place (suarez does a decent job too).
A very strong defensive side was already FCB's weakness (even during ineista and xavi times) but FCB managed it thru possession and war of attrition. So sadly there are very few ways for the current FCB to cope up with these teams. But it's a work in progress.

Then he played as an inverted winger at LW and won golden boot and fifa the best. Then after joining rmcf, to fill the void of Raul and rmcf having best midfield, he became a box player. Again in juve, he didn't play in the same style as in rmcf because here the midfield is weak. So he roams around flanks and attacks. When higuain goes absent, CR7 takes his role. And when higuain present and Dybala absent, He drops down. And if Messi can minimise his team's weakness. When both suarez and fati was out in 2019/20 season, why Messi didn't step up as a pure striker and why signed brathwaite controversially. Just because Messi can't play as a pure striker and can't outmuscle defence mark standing inside the box.

This ronaldo was a midfielder/not a pure striker at United bs y"all pull make it seem like he was some amazing playmaker when all he did was run in straight-line. There's a reason he thrived in Madrid as pure striker beciz that's what he's best at. He NEVER had the playmaking, creative dribbling abilities of messi.
