90 percent forward pass accuracy is wild 😯
Although It's weird that he said just because Messi scanned 5 times before being passed the ball; above the league average of 2.8 that he's like 2 times better, that's so stupid 😅.
This is why I've always liked players like Pirlo, Modric, Messi. There's such an elegance in intelligent game overview, awareness and the great passing plays that emerge from it. So much more satisfying to watch than the cheap technical skill and tricks of more individualist players.

Putting Messi next to Pirlo is an insult to Pirlo
@@bigsmoke6805 Messi literally is a greater Playmaker and an equal if not better passer than pirlo. I remember in one of the season when pirlo was still active, Messi created way more chances and big chances on the pitch than pirlo the entire season. If we talk about playmaking awards like "IFHHS Best playmaker" (an anuual award given to the best playmaker of the year), Messi have the most currently with 5. Pirlo have none since Xavi and iniesta dominated the award from 2008 to 2013. Then from 2014 to 2022, messi dominated mostly by winning everything except 4 years in between when kroos won the award once, modric once, and Kdb 2 times (and he'll probably win another this year.KDB was fire this season). Great explanation of a vital skill in modern football. Scanning is the difference between a good player and a great player. Very important video and every young footballer should study and continually work on this skill.
This video is garbage. Scanning isn't that important. Players memorize positions.
It's called football IQ. And this is why Messi tops Pele and Maradona. It's not just about scanning. Scanning just gives you the information on which to base your decision. The most important part is making the right decision (especially when you have more than one option), and then executing it. And unlike how the game was played 30 or 50 years ago, when the pace was much slower, all that usually has to happen in seconds, sometimes within a split second.
As an example of what happens when you don't hone this skill, take Kolo Muani's last minute lost chance in the final. If he had not been hypnotized by the goalposts, and turned his head ever so slightly, he would've seen Mbappe open to his left. A simple touch would have done it. He also fails to see Emi Martinez coming straight at him with arms and legs wide open, and decides to whack it instead of trying a gentle chip. He's a young player and has much to learn.
With Messi, this is a natural talent. Nobody taught him. He had it since he was a child. And by now he's perfected it. This is made evident in Argentina's second goal in the final, when he receives a ball from MacAllister with his back toward the French goal, and watches him run past him for the return pass. But he had already seen two French defenders behind him and knew that they would likely block the pass. Additionally, he knew that MacAllister would need a couple of seconds to gain the advantage. He also knew that Julian Alvarez was open by the side line with nobody marking him. So he touches the ball lightly in the air with his right foot and then flips it to Julian with his left, throwing off the French defenders. Julian makes the razor-sharp through pass, and MacAllister times his pass to Di María to perfection. IMHO, one of the best goals ever scored in a WC, certainly in this WC.
For all the skills, and dribbling, and speed, and power that a player may have (and it's good to have those too), it's using those skills smartly that makes the difference. This video highlights that very effectively, and I'm glad someone has finally done it, because it explains Messi's 'walking' very well, and how it works to his advantage. Some people think that football is about running like a wild animal, when actually it's about running when you can make it count, and better yet, making the ball run to make it count.
You've nailed it on so many points here.
Messi's technical ability stands out amongst his peers, and also amongst the best to ever play the game.
"it's about running when you can make it count, and better yet, making the ball run to make it count."
Exactly! As my dad always used to tell me: the ball is faster than the player.
I hope you realize how delusional you sound. Messi was born with it??! 😆 C'mon.
Brilliant analysis. Thank you 🙏
Another good example of this was his assist to Molina vs Netherlands. People ask how he saw the run of Molina, did he have eyes at the back of his head? But in reality it is his game sense. His understanding of the game is what seperates him from other legendary football players. He KNEW Molina would make the run and where he would be to receive his pass. And to top off his brilliant iq, he has the insane skill to pull off the execution of such a pass. He is unarguably the greatest player ever to set foot on a football pitch and he demonstrated all his different colours at the world cup: long shots, clutch goals, out-of-the-world passes, vintage dribbling skills, composure (ice in the veins) and the power of desire and leadership. The perfect campaign to summarise Lionel Messi.
His feet are on the ground, his eyes are in the air, his intelligence is above the wind. Master of eagle eyes. Lionel Messi.
It's NOT JUST THE SCANNING.
It's the incredible speed he processes what he's actually seing, which allows him to scan left to right and back again, with just a swing of his head.
He just "see" everything at a glance, and anyone who has played football at, at least, a semi professional level, knows how hard is to percieve things while moving at fast speed.
This is why Messi has that "spider sense" level awareness that alloes him to dribble players cominh right from behind, and makes us think "how the hell did he knew a rival ws coming?".
He not only scans a lot, he actually "see" things faster. His reflexes are out of chart.
Yeah but that practise since a kid. He just perfected the scanning by years and years of training and improvement. And helped that he started soon since a kid
Explains his insane football intelligence. He probably constantly create a real-time mental map of those around him in milliseconds.
He is a great strategist along with everything

EXCELLENT post. Of course, scanning is but a part of Messi's skill. It will NOT make you a Messi; his level is unteachable. But this is a critical skill that will ultimately improve your game.
You can scan as much as you can, but you do need to have the skill of a genius to capitalise the play as Messi does.
Yehhh, it takes almost two lives to get there . Keep it up !!
That world cup final healed 99% of all my pains.
Didn't feel like an ad. Well done.
When we say Messi is the GOAT it’s not only about goal scoring .. it’s about everything else he does before that and this video explains it better
This ability to scan is explained well in the Blue Lock manga and it is called “metavision”. The best players always scan the field, take in all of that information, and then using their football IQ, they come to the best decision to achieve their goals, whether that goal is scoring, or setting up a teammate, etc. This is exactly what Isagi (the main character of Blue Lock) learns and uses it to absolutely annihilate teams.
I've always been a scanner. The best players are scanners. Xavi was the grandmaster (and, of course, the scanning midfield of Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets, and Messi was deadly). It's shocking to me how many pro players are poor scanners. As you say, it's a skill that can be practiced and learned and, frankly, easier to learn than most physical skills. Any coach teaching young players should make this skill a priority.
people say there is no such thing like talent only hardwork, but when i see Messi it just alters my opinion some people really are blessed with god gifted talent.
You're absolutely correct. If it was only down to hard work we would've seen a lot more Messis.

Tremendous class in this marketing strategy itself.
👏👏
The point you make at 2:55 is impeccable. How much uicker he was to react is literally the difference for La Pulga, and any great, ie Steph curry.
Its good. We perceived what we see with our central vision. We dont really process anything we see on our peripheral vision. Moving head like this help to deeply understand the circumstances of the game and make the best just in time decision making.
Leo's playmaking is the epitome of fluidity, a transcendental river that cascades through the heart of the opposition, carving its path with the finesse of a master sculptor.
His passes are the whispers of the wind, guiding the ball with the delicate touch of a poet's quill, each stroke a verse in a breathtaking symphony of creation. His vision is that of an eagle soaring miles above the earth, surveying the battlefield with a clarity and precision that defies mortal comprehension.
Very good info. You could also notice many times the players around him often ended up watching Messi when he's on the ball instead of scanning their surrounding first.
Now I'm curious how Maguire scans his surrounding in every matches lol
He his simply God gifted.
This deserves a 100 part series. Give us 99 more. Then you can do 100 on his shoe laces.
we all football lovers need to be grateful because we are living with this legend. I'm not sure we will see legend like that anymore
Situational awareness is what divides pros and amateurs
Another good point is his walking is actually brilliant. Not because of the walking itself, its where he walks. He consistently occupies whichever space on the pitch is the most dangerous one, and slowly adjusts his position to remain in that as the players move. Towards the beginning of the game he drifts in and out of it. Part of why he often starts slow. As he gets the feel he pretty much lives there the rest of the match.
They used ML to analyze player positioning a few years back and figure out if any players were especially good at it. Messi was better than everyone else by a country mile. The group after him where all brilliant midfield playmakers.
Its the reason he picks and chooses his moments to help defensively. He's maintaining the dangerous position so he can spring after the attack.
He's basically playing a playmaker they way some strikers play poacher. Its mental. So people talking players innovating. . . What position does Messi truly play? Whether hes a striker, midfielder or right winger, he pretty nuch drifts into whatever the weak point of the defense is and wreaks havoc as a creator, and then often turns around and becomes a striker, frequently finishing off the chance he created in the first place 4 passes ago.
His location changes, but he basically plays his own position that no one else has any idea how to play yet. Someday people will catch up, just like how many players can replicate the skills and way Pele played now. But like Pele, we'll probably be old by the time anyone catches up.
Messi also uses it because he is constantly shadowed and double teamed. He uses it to find pockets of space where he can recieve the ball and where the openings are
For those wondering about Be Your Best… yes it absolutely helps you and one of the nicest perks is that the more you train the less nervous you get in matches and the better you can keep your cool. This is crucial to provide good performances to your team

What’s crazy is all the little touches on the ball he does that you can only see in slow motion.
This is the real life basis of Meta-Vision in Blue Lock.
Annoying thing is when your teammates delay releasing the ball then all scanning goes to waste. Or when you have no idea when they will release the ball because they dribble unnecessarily.

The best coach my son ever had pulled him up from a much lower level team bc he liked the way he checked his shoulder as the 6 and made mostly simple, decisive, 1-level passes on the ground. Thus cosch’s mantra to the team was “check your shoulder, check your shoulder, check your freaking shoulder!” He incorporated scanning into even simple drills. That team’s focus on the fundamentals of possesion football made them successful. Teams that have been less succesful tend to be the ones with guys who are convinced of their superior ability to dribble. Footskills have their place when you have an advantage or a 1v1 but some guys think they’re gonna go ‘coast to coast’ numbers be damned.
