This game is so good. I usually play games that are way more complex then this ( On Mars, Gloomhaven, Brass, Trickerion, Anachrony, SW Rebellion.... ), but this game just blow my mind.

That last turn is the epitome of what happens when my wife and I play a game like this. We are at some parity during the game, and then the last turn I'll have a big blowout turn while she did very little, and it ends in a 20 point difference. Lincoln said it bets when he said it's all about accounting and some people are just not great at that and also looking ahead and setting up that final turn. Overall I don't think the game is very crunchy, but it does have a lot of mechanics and a point salad feel. I recently bought this game and am looking forward to playing it with my wife and hopefully some friends. Thanks for the playthrough.

29:40 Lincoln played 3 free action cards but took no action. If you take no action, you are supposed to pass. Nikki passed on her turn and Lincoln took a turn to move up the exploration chart. You may not see the difference, but it could make a difference in game play.
I thought players were able to cash in their compass and gold cards for those resources without spending them
Anthony it is a free action to do that, but every turn you must take an action or pass. Free actions are not actions.

Nikki could exile cards she had already played. Thinking she had to exile cards in her hand was holding her back a ton.

I want to agree because it's entertaining to watch, but there were a lot of rules mistakes during gameplay so that's not great...
Don't know about you, but I enjoy just watching them play, NOT taking up space by calling out mistakes. I'll learn it myself when I receive it anyway. Have fun Game Night, thanks for playing!

During setup @20:11, the top spot on research track is suppose to be seeded with tiles facedown equal to the number of players, not a single faceup tile. First person to reach that spot gets to look through the ones available and choose which tile he/she wants leaving the remaining tiles facedown for anyone else who reaches the top.

On the research track can you just get the top level tile if you have the required resources? Or do you have to get a first level tile then a second then level then the top?
You can go straight for the top.
1:07:06 That assistant requires you to play a card from your hand to your play area when you draw a card. The upgraded side of the assistant would be a purely free draw...
And 1:12:27 I think Lincoln should have gotten the bonus tile and the row bonus, both were to draw a card, so he should have drawn 2.

Can you go into discovered site afterwards and get the reward the second time in later rounds? Its kinda weirdly written in the rule book.
I played with my wife first time and we played so we could not get the reward the second time (or even go to the site second time if there was no guardian) , so it was little bit painful to do anything cos of the lack of resources.
Yes, you can go to a discovered site with the dig action. The difference is that you don't pay the cost of compasses, just the cost of the travel to that site (car, boat or plane) and then get the reward of the site even if it has a guardian on it.
I would be delighted if you could do a mini series involving playing classic games like clue...Battleship...Yahtzee.etc....

I loved that too.. Having a spyglass and arrowheads there just turned into hourglass.! Teaching games with a lot of resources does that to you..
Entertaining game for sure
I enjoyed the gameplay when I owned it but what ultimately killed it for me was two things:
I get it that thematically when you're exploring you don't know what you'll find and what guardian you'll run into which makes it random, but that randomness in a board game hurts when someone lucks out pulling a guardian that uses resources you just got from the location itself and someone else is screwed into something they can't defeat.
Also at higher player counts that I've played at, the person who DOESN'T explore often tends to win. They allow the other players to explore and piggyback off the new locations and jump up the temple track. It's almost like not helping the game progress is rewarded in a higher player count.
It looks beautiful and is super thematic. Love the overall idea and tons of unique item and artifact cards but i ultimately had to trade it because of what I found to be annoying gameplay flaws. To each their own though.
I totally agree with you. Do you think that the game needs more rounds than 5 and also wouldn't be better that at some point, maybe at round 3 to be able to play one more card?
@@WhiteOpsDude At first I absolutely thought the game needed at least an extra round, but after playing a few times you understand how to stretch your resources to get the most out of them. So basically the more you play the less painful only having 5 rounds feels lol
I'm not sure what you mean by an extra card play since there isn't a set amount of cards you get to play per round... It all depends how you maximize your hand in the first two rounds if you'll be playing more cards than everyone else.
Did you find this criticism to be the same even if you played on the snake side of the board?
@@Vagueperson yes, the two criticisms i had are the same on either side of the board
They made a lot of mistakes during their play through; they often took only free actions on their turns without doing a main action (they would have to a “pass” main action if they could not or chose not to do anything else, but they still would be able to do their free actions. They bought artifact cards & they should have remained in their play area for the remainder of the round (they used the immediate effect & then placed it at the bottom of their deck). I think there was a round in which Lincoln passed & then his next turn he bought an artifact (he should have been out for the remainder of the round).
you can do free actions before, during, or after your main action
@@minimii1000 True, but you can't completely skip your main action one turn, and then do one the next turn. Main action or pass is mandatory.

he paid two compasses instead of three to explore, is that correct?
I think he also played a compass card, and then another card for the boat icon. They shortcut the playing of fast actions for coins or compasses.
I think it needs more rounds than 5
It sure feels that way the first time you play, but with some practice round 4 and 5 you can get so much stuff done by chaining everything in a smart order.

Thanks for demonstrating an exploring heavy gameplay! Yea.. doesn't seem to be worth it. The explorer carries all the risk + the extra cost of compasses. I would just wait for other players to explore locations, meanwhile i spend my saved compasses for artifacts and benefit from the explored locations for free the next round.
I would probably house rule this game to make exploring more enticing:
1. Reduce the cost from 6 to 4 and 3 to 2 compasses
2. Fill all the location spots at the start of the game with the guardians revealed. The location remains secret. That way the game becomes more strategic (you see the boss but the 'treasure' is still a gamble)
Exploring has huge benefits. The exploration track is most important but exploring garners lots of resources (which turn into points later) and guardian victories pile up.
does exploring become more enticing on the snake side by having the research track more difficult?
@@darbyl3872 You can fight the guardians as long as you have the resources and are in the space (so right after exploring!) Exploring early helps ensure you have enough resource to defeat them on the same round
This feels a little more substance than quality - and a little too messy. But I enjoyed watching them play!
Uf, this game might be fun, but it seems like a lot of mess to me.
I turned off 5 mins into watching the How to Play, there's much better guides to the game out there. Then came back to watch them play and still gave up.
One of the best games I played. Its so easy to teach and learn
far too much material on lincoln's clothing. Very distracting cuffs.
Most overhyped, overrated game of 2020.
at first glance i loved this game and vowed to get a copy, but the more i see it played the more i realise it is quite flawed and also i hate games that run out before i have had my quota of fun.
