Actually, this is the original riff that Kirk Hammett created for Exodus, but he showed the riff to Metallica and it became Master of Puppets. Look up Metallica and Exodus riffs and you'll hear all the riffs Metallica used from Exodus.
For those who repeat like automatons, this riff is very common in English Heavy Metal especially the NWOBHM era. Which is the biggest influence on the evolution of Thrash, therefore it has nothing to do with Metallica.
I agree that this is definitely a product of NWOBHM influence, but listen to the tempo. It is exactly the same as the Master of Puppets' main riff with the only difference being the minor scale instead of the chromatic one they later used (probably to give it a more "thrashy" vibe). But the prototype is definitely here
This song is great! I don't know if Kirk reused this riff on Master of Puppets (which is another great tune!). I know he reused some of his riffs on Ride the Lightning - on two of my favorites off that album (Creeping Death and Trapped Under Ice). I love this ditty too! \m/
Alot of people say Exodus was the "original thrash band" but honestly i wouldn't call this thrash at all, closer to british heavy metal i think. No disrespect intended at all because they are an awesome band either way but just because the band formed a year or 2 earlier than other thrash bands i don't this can be considered the birth of thrash. Just my 2c
Kirk and Gary never got credited for starting thrash metal and it pisses me off. Exodus formed before any thrash band did. 1979 was when they formed Exodus.
Maybe the first recording of a band that would later play thrash, but this is not fully thrash yet, it sounds a lot like NWOBHM, especially Di'Anno-era Iron Maiden, Tygers Of Pan Tang and Blitzkrieg! If you consider it thrash, why not, it's the final step of heavy metal before it became thrash by the way, but in this case the earliest thrash record would have to be something like Angel Witch's demos (1978) or Diamonds Head's first album (recorded in 1979) which were by no way less thrash than Exodus's first demo
It's a pretty comoun riff. I even heard a spanish band use the "Two minuts for midnight" riff (puta-extremoduro). But I think this exodus riff It's pretty close to the master of puppets's ones. Maybe we can say that they both share the same rythm but the aproach of the notes used is more closed to master rather than to maiden .

Meh, I don't think so, I play guitar and the two riffs are played completely different. However, master of puppets is also written by Kirk Hammett, just like this song, so it shouldnt surprise you that the two seem a little like one another.

Exodus, Slayer and Metallica (w/ Megadeth's Dave Mustaine) basically took Metal (injected with amphetamines) and created "THRASH Metal". But really before all of them was the biggest and baddest thrash before the existence of "THRASH "band, which was Motorhead who incidentally considered themselves plain old "rock n roll" which a lot of their material indeed was. However, Motorhead was basically Black Sabbath injected 💉 with crystal meth or could even be seen as punk with lead guitars 🎸. However you wanna look at it.
probably the riff of Master of Puppets was from Kirk......
Might also be from no remorse
Actually, the riff at the end of seek and destroy also kinda sounds like MOP

Awesome. Thanks for the HQ!!!

I can clearly hear Master of Puppets in the verse!

Master! Mas... Oh wrong song!
No, this riff is very common in the NWOBHM, which in turn is the major influence for the evolution of Thrash.
@@undisputedattitude2902 Hence the joke about a thrash song. Obviously the NWOBHM came first.

@ThrashAttack85 I'm glad you like it.

*wow great riffing, wish it sounded better.*
Fucking love the raw sound
Question: who had the baddest first album: Slayer, Exodus or Metallica? The 3 original "THRASH Metal " bands.

@DethReaperMoleRat It sure is!

@HerveGamerDude No, Mad Butcher sounds like this!
Don't correct me on this one, this is one of (if not) the first thrash metal recording/band.

Bon Scott is that you ??
0:40 Am I the one who seems this riff remembers more Two Minutes to Midnight than Master of Puppets?!
That'd mean maiden ripped off exodus. Which is crazy cause maiden probably hadn't even heard of exodus at that point

Yeah well, the Two Minutes to Midnight riff is almost verbatim with Riot's Swords and Tequila riff which came out way before the Maiden song.
@choconatio Haha, if you find a service that prints images on t-shirts, I think I can provide you the image in it's full sized glory :D
Seems like demo version of master of puppets
what ? nothing of this is anything like puppets. i know everyone is saying that.. i dont agree tho.
