  • I recorded before and after videos of 4 florists who I "cold walked" into. I also talk about other resources that can connect you with a florist to sell.

Look into using Gather Flora for your selling platform. They are free for the farmer since our margins are so much slimmer. The florists pay the fees. They’re way more farmer friendly than Rooted, in my opinion. They’re fairly new, but they are growing pretty quickly. Pretty much all in the west so far, but I think they’re planning to expand nationwide. I started selling there last fall, and everyone is so incredibly helpful.

@@bareflowerfarm I looked into Rooted a couple of years ago, but I just never really understood why the poor farmers had to pay all the fees. The florists have a much bigger margin to play with. Farmers barely scrape by sometimes!

Thanks for sharing. Very helpful. Being able to "take requests" for growing plants specific florists want locally may be a niche you can fill. I'm not sure there is a cure for the proverbial "Middle Man", but it seems like the more features and reach they have, the more expensive they become, which may not be worth it. Perhaps, focusing more on the local market with a less fancy payment system would be best. There's something to be said for keeping things simple. Cheers from FL.

There is something very simple and valid about this approach. There is def a bit of scattering as many darts as possible just to get a target hit but I agree - once I have a few florists I may go down this route!

Great content! Question, did you change your insurance to sell to florist? Thanks!

I actually did not because my co-op is still a market so I just changed the market name on the insurance :)

the website/iventory/pay system is where Im getting hung up. Is Square hosting your website as well as your inventory/payment system? I don't really want to manage a website annnd inventory annnd multiple pay systems. the more I can consolidate and streamline the amount of time im spending on all of the backend admin work the better....

So it's confusing because there are technically 3 different companies 🤣.
      1) Squarespace is what I use for my website. They are first and foremost a webhosting platform which means what they excel in is helping you design a nice website.
      2) Square is a "point of sale" system. This is the little card reader that people put on their phones to accept credit cards at a market. This means they excel in helping you accept credit card as payment without you needing a fancy system like you see at a brick and mortar shop.
3). Stripe is a credit card payment processor. One thing to note is that having a website vs a website that can sell products via ecommerce are two very different things. Squarespace is not in the business of processing payments so it needs something like a Stripe or a Paypal to process the payment.
In 2023, you actually have a few options. An example of 2 are:
Option 1: You predominantly sell at a market and use Square. Square allows you to set up a simple 1 page "website" where you can refer people to buy product. But this is not a full fledged website. That being said, everything is under 1 system for "ease"
Option 2: You want a nice website, you sell alot of stuff on your website and you want to prioritize having a nice website. But you also do some markets. You could hypothetically do everything via Squarespace as they have a point of system offering BUT this is typically more expensive then just using another service like Square. This is how people end up using multiple systems!
In my situation, I have a website and while I COULD set up wholesale for florists on there, there are a couple of limitations beyond inventory. For example, I would need to set up a locked area for only wholesale customers. It is doable but you have to pay extra for this service. The other is that I need to collect resale tax certificates AND not charge state tax on florist purchases. This is a bit more complicated to do on Squarespace. So I signed up for Rooted Farmers because it does those two things for me.
Okay, this was alot but I hope it somewhat clarifies what you're asking!
TLDR- Unfortunately, one can streamline everything by going through one "system" but the trade off is typically higher cost and inferiority in certain areas.

I have a totally off topic question. What is the humidity like when you grow tulips hydroponically?

    • @bareflowerfarm
      @bareflowerfarm  ปีที่แล้ว

My basement is naturally anywhere from 35-60% in humidity (thankfully)!
