As someone who specializes in dinnerplate dahlias, and wanting to have a specialty outside of their season. This really intrigues me. Valentine's Day is over right when dahlia tubers get started. It is also is not back breaking work so to establish this as an off season income means ones body still gets the winter recuperation period. I am really enjoying these last three videos where you talk about tulip forcing and am seriously paying attention. It is something I never even thought about, so thank you.
I was thinking of you actually when I was typing in “dinnerplate dahlias” 🙂. I totally agree, this is the least back breaking work unless you count receiving the tulips in the crates and moving them lol!!
The crates when wet are around 60lb. But its a massive pain because they may be dripping or soil flying around. They hydroponic trays are way more clean and manageable around 10lb with water!
@@bareflowerfarm For me, I don't buy soil, but rather make my own. I can only make so much so that is one reason the hydroponics really interests me. Plus my seed room is basically not being used over the winter, so it has a place to happen already.
A lot of good stuff in this video Jessie! I started my flower business in 2022 just like you, but I chose to be a florist who grows flowers instead of a farmer who sells flowers. If you'd like to pick my brain about the florist/supplier dynamics, let me know!
Hi Jesse, I wslked in to a local florist, I bought 2 stems of mums and two of alstramaria.. I asked do you by from local growers besides whole sale.. he perked up and said yes😀 he sells a mum stem for $6.00. Very long and sturdy. he said bring some in..he also asked what do I grow? I rattled off a list and said he really likes zinnia. All your coaching and others helped me go in and speak to them so naturally. So grateful.. the more outlets the better is so true. I am looking for a collective in Buffalo Ny. Not seeing any like yours. Many ways to sell you just have discern what is best and for me I wait upon God to direct. Sometimes I move too slow or too fast. 🙃
The florist I went to didn't mention that about quantity.. I will only sell quality stems. He can always go to a wholesaler. But as we know Zinnia is not typically at wholesale warehouses so he was glad to hear of those. He did reassure me about tulips I'm growing, that the stems didn't need to be very long only about 12" be because they lengthen. So ask and let them decide. 🎉
I know this doesnt pertain to this video, but question...... Could you share how you did your deer fencing? The process, supplies and such.... Would love to know how you did it. Thanks.
Hey Karin! So I ordered a deer kit from Deerbusters. The quality is good but the instructions and experience weren’t so I created a video on this. We talk about high level process and challenges to watch out for but if you search for deerbusters on TH-cam, you can find more detailed videos. I believe that deerbusters is a “dealer” and other companies sell basically the same deer fence kit so I’m not sure if another company would provide more instructions! th-cam.com/video/J-tZaQ2fmVo/w-d-xo.html
Thank you Jessie this is such valuable information! Entering my second year of flower farming so I appreciate all that you have been sharing. When selling to florists are you collecting sales tax or do you have the florist give you a resale certificate? I am guessing it varies from state to state. I am new to the business world so learning all this when also learning about growing can be tricky. Thanks for the amazing content!
You are correct! It varies by state. In my state of NJ, you would ask for a resale certificate. Anytime you sell to another party who is going to resell to the end consumer, this would apply since the state would be “double dipping” if we also collected sales tax. I just save the pdf’s to a folder just in case the state ever asks!
Thank you! You produce such great videos with much needed content. What is the easiest web site platform for someone without experience setting up or maintaining one?
This is a good question and one I struggle to answer! It depends on what you want the website to do. Squarespace in my view is the easiest to set up for a newbie who doesn’t have any front end (html) experience. However, it falls short in e-commerce. Shopify is by far a leader if your website is going to sell a lot of stuff online and they have templates you buy to make it easier to set up. But… it is a website geared towards e-commerce vs a site that is housing information. I would stay away from WordPress as a newbie bc you really need coding experience to make it look good. As for WIX, i have never used it but I’ve seen mixed reviews. I would start off with Squarespace - there’s a free version before you “publish” it and you can see if you like the interface!
Hi , thank you for this video. Question when you do go to shops/florsit to sell flowers do you need to do paperwork or have a licence beforehand to sell?
Hi! Every state is different. In NJ, we don't need a license. I know in Lousiana, you actually need to get a florist license. You can look this up on your state's website!

@@bareflowerfarm As long as the crates weigh 60lbs or less, my back is good. How much do they weigh?
