- Have you ever felt overwhelmed by deadlines, points systems, or even figuring out where to start?
Well, I’ve talked to a ton of new and intermediate western hunters and you're not alone. The good news is with the right strategies, tools, and some advice you can dramatically increase your chances of chasing elk and/or deer in the West.
Let’s be honest-between deciphering hunting regulations, analyzing harvest statistics, and wading through draw odds in multiple states, it feels like you need a college degree to navigate the increasingly complex process.
This is a huge topic, and we only scratch the surface in this show! The Wyoming deadline is looming, so today, I’m going to focus on some of the Wyoming issues and opportunities and share some insight and strong opinions!

Great info Mark, love the no nonsense presentation including the frustration of state draw processes!
Love the rants on ID otc and Wy Wilderness. All truth.
100%
Lots of good information..Thanks for laying it all out.
Thank You, hopefully will get better as I go.
I love discussion about solo camping / hunting staging food and equipment and strategies to beling comfortable alone in the back country
It’s funny you brought that up because I’ve written a couple articles about that and that’s on my list for some upcoming shows
This was such a great video. Also loved Marks “rant” about WY wilderness lol
Some folks don't like the truth, but that does not make it untrue... LOL
@ lol yessir!
I love all the information! What about an episode with some less experienced western hunters so we can learn what not to do or what to watch out for. You , Ryan, Brian and people like that are so used to doing it you forget to maybe mention things that we have no idea about. I hope this makes some sense.
I 100% agree, these first episodes are just to break the ice, we are going to get down to work in some episodes coming soon.
Great job thanks for the breakdown!
I wish Wyoming only had 1 type of tag for the draw.
Between wolves and otc tags going away it's getting harder and harder for a NR to have a decent opportunity at and elk.
That’s why you have to expand your horizons like you’re doing right here. Western hunters that are not continuing their education are going to more than likely see declining results.
Even as a non-resident I love the WY Wilderness restriction. Its not hard to find a "resident guide" and the hunting is unreal. It just takes a tiny bit of networking, which 95% of people won't do.
If it wasn't for this rule the hunting in WY wouldn't be nearly as good.
I understand that 100%, I have been able to do the same. But the fact is it is Public Land, The next step is to take all the Public Land in a particular state and completely eliminate non-resident hunting. That is already on the table in other states. We have to be very careful with what we are willing to accept! I really appreciate the comment, that is what this whole project is about getting the conversations going. I already know where the residents of WY would stand.....
@@TreelineAcademy I can understand your point of view on it.
For me when I see all these comments about hating the WY wilderness rule I instantly picture a "weekend warrior" road hunter that doesn't have the ambition to us the loop hole that wyoming has given.
@@TreelineAcademyremember the locals too. This creates a much better experience for us with less pressure
So many truth bombs in this it's absolutely refreshing. Mark should run for some new federal office that oversees state agencies that run these crazy ignorant big game application processes and bring some sort of common sense to all the systems across the board. Great information and love the sarcastic laden humor based in the sad reality of how nutso so much of this stuff is.
Good info. being only a few years into this, the tag systems are insane. Does an OTC cow tag exist? It so hard to just narrow down a meat hunt
I would like to know this too.
Yes there are some easy to get cow tags in several states. Again, I highly recommend GOHUNT or Huntin Fool to do your research....
@@PEAXEquipmentCo I have Gohunt. I think I'm getting closer to narrowing some things down. Trying to make sure I got a tag and getting out, and if all goes well I'll feed the family just a bit too. If you have any more advice or leads I'm all ears. Thank you sir.
The state is held in trust to manage the wildlife for the residents of the state if they feel they can give tags to nonresidents that’s a plus maybe people shouldn’t bitch about it they technically aren’t required to give tags to nonresidents
Neither are all the other states, that would really suck for a lot of elk hunters if these states started that game banning each other from hunting.
My only complaint would be it sounds like you are reading a script...or I'm reading an article...I've heard you on many podcasts and have always enjoyed your input and humor...maybe a co host?
I'm working on that, I would love to do more just free with no notes, but I want to cover quick and concise and only 20 min to cover a lot of stuff. When i start doing more training and how-to stuff that will completely no notes... I do appreciate that feedback very much... Some of the news-type parts are pretty monologue style on purpose, but it might evolve, thank you for the feedback means a lot.
@@PeaxLivesayI subscribed...look fwd to future episodes.
and dont forget colorado changing the rules after a guy has saved for 20 years
Oh, trust me, I have a show coming up on Colorado very soon. It’s going to be much then most people think
At least you have a few years until Colorado new rules start
I would be upset if I had 20 points spent all that money and now having the rug pulled out. I realize something has to be done, but poor planning put them in this situation, they failed to do simple math, just like with the wolves.... A very short sided view
@@PEAXEquipmentCo I have 23 WY sheep points. They cut the non resident quota in half. Waiting for people to die at this point.
Those Rants are so true on both ID and WY and have turned my family away from ID especially.
We definitely need someone who can Red Flag 🚩 all of the units that non residents have ZERO percent chance of drawing ever. Might have to knock on Brady Miller’s door and suggest that in either their Filtering 2.0, Draw Odds Stand Alone page and App Strategy articles.
But Eastmans sure do draw every year and I cant draw that area for the past 15 years
Why would Idaho change? Call them stupid but there is no incentive for them to change. Sell out every year with a line of people wishing they could buy a tag. So who is stupid?🤔
You are right, but the public is not happy and they work for the public, but you are 100% right, they might not change at all.
You are correct, except the incredibly bad PR they are getting not to mention the liability risks when the system goes down etc. The system is prime for major issues. If I was selfish I like the way it is too.
@@ericnave4547 lol maybe it is a random draw and you guys don’t even know it is
The wilderness regulation is a benefit for people who choose to live in Wyoming year round. No need to whine about it.
If we adopt that mentality, then all the other Western states should ban non-residents, starting with WY residents who hunt Montana all the time... But I can't blame people for wanting it, I mean who doesn't
...until the state has no money to fund their conservation efforts. Their only option will be to raise resident license fees. Maybe once they ban the non-residents, they will start putting restrictions on the residents. Eventually they will ban the residents from hunting. At that point, you might as well relinquish your rights to own a gun because, of course, there will be no reason to own one. When the government makes hunters fight with each other, the government wins. Divide and conquer.
Folks don't always like the truth...
Thanks for the video. Please explain what you mean by no refund, what money are you referring to for a NR tag? If you put in for the draw and aren't successful you are refunded your license money albeit not until the draw takes place.
I mean that if you draw the tag and for some reason you are unable to hunt, WY generally does not give refunds. Although you can withdraw from the draw before a specific deadline and get a refund. You are correct if you are unsuccessful in the draw you are refunded minus fees.
Stay out of Idaho go to Colorado
I understand that point of view. We should have the same here in Montana....
Because we don’t want you here Wyoming residents can’t draw either because of you out of staters
Yea, well, that's not True. The non-residents pay the bills for you all for one at $2,000 per tag, and the allocated percentage of tags is a fixed number.
Wyoming says it’s a privilege that you guys can come and hunt there technically by law they don’t have to give you tags. The companies like peaks go hunt all these other companies. Don’t want to make money for you guys got to get people out hunting so that they can make money.
Listen to this “ Karen “ 😂😂 …..Resident guides are easily found 🤷🏼♂️
Let me guess, your from Wyoming...
@ no sir but I’m guessing you are from Montana or Cali , same difference these days!
Got it, understand your position, it's not that uncommon
