The rifle that's proving a favourite for snipers in Ukraine war

  • A sniper rifle has proven so effective on the battlefield in Ukraine that it has become highly sought after by soldiers on both sides of the conflict.
The Ukrainian military claims the UAR-10 can hit targets 1,200 metres away - more than the 800-metre range of the Russian Dragunov or SVD the Ukrainians were using previously.

1200 meters is really pushing the limits of 7.62 x 51mm. After about 800 meters the ballistics become very wonky. As in you’d have to roll custom match ammo just for this particular rifle. Much better than the SVD but any Semi auto will have difficulty at those ranges.

    • @sebastiang8634
      @sebastiang8634 ปีที่แล้ว +20

Pretty much my thoughts on the 7.62x51. That said, getting match ammo is probably still easier (logistically) than getting a different cartridge, such as a .338 LM or .300 WM cartridges and a set of Mk-18 rifles (which are, to the best of my knowledge, the closest to a mil-spec semi-auto in those cartridges).

Exactly my take. 1000 yds, maybe 1100 yds, with a 20" barrel .308 gas gun, 1 in 10" twist, 175 gr FGMM, but to ensure hits you need the 6.5 Creedmoor barrel in it like the LMT rifles to get a few hundred more yards of reach. The new 6.8 rounds are supposed to surpass that, but it'll be awhile before they are available in any quantity.

The AR-10 and AR-15 are inherently accurate systems as the gas piston and gas cylinder are also the bolt and bolt carrier and they are both in direct line with the bore of the barrel, so the working of the action during firing doesn't impose any bending force on the barrel. The design makes it very easy the free-float (make it so nothing can touch or bend) the barrel as any pressure on the barrel can effect accuracy.
Even an el cheapo $800 PSA AR-10 can shoot MOA (2.9 cm at 100 m) or sub-MOA with match ammo, I kid you not.

Even if it's being used to help accomplish goals by the NAZI leadership in Ukraine who caused this conflict? To believe otherwise is to not research and assess the data honestly. The MAJORITY of the country (both sides) wanted peace. It's the goal of vile cvnts that the US is supporting; who also intimidated Zelensky into accommodating. Zelensky after all RAN on a platform of PEACEFULLY RESOLVING the conflict and restoring relations with Russia... Only to renege (undermining the Minsk 2 agreement) declaring half the population TERRORISTS.
Or maybe see if any of the people in the Donbas who Ukraine claims it "liberated" are happy when W. Ukrainians controlled their territory. Why don't those videos exist? Is this actually "about the Ukrainian people," "Democracy," and "Freedom" as the US & Keiv claim? Such as the freedom to vote to separate from your nation when that nation has began a campaign of terrorizing it's civilian (bombing from aircraft & shelling with artillery) population.
If it's NOT legal to do so, why did the UN claim it was for Serbia / Kosovo..? If it is legal to do so ... why were election observers who wanted to provide reports about the legitimacy threatened and implored NOT to observe the elections-and those who ignored those threats who did...had their reports ignored...only to then claim (after refusing to accept the reports from the only observers who did watch) to "know they were not free and fair" ... when you can only "know" that in order to make that statement if you actually observed them..?

In fact, no single weapon alone will, other than maybe shovels (j/k). It is all about combined arms warfare. And the Russians are much better at that and getting better every day. The war is already over for Ukraine on the battlefield, while here on the INTERNET (La-La-Land), the Ukrainians won on day one. You didn't mention UAR-10 muffler improvements in breaking up discharge friction. One of the dead give aways for a sniper is where the sound came from. But with UAR-10 muffler, it levels out the bandwidth on to the sideways corridor of space(into a straight line), so although it's still possible to know from which direction the shot came from, it's impossible to pin point the location just by sound.

1,200 meters is just lobbing it, especially with a military round. A higher spec AR-10 chambered in 7.62/308 is my primary training rifle. Hitting a silhouette target past ~750 meters reliably requires optimal conditions and high familiarity with the setup (e.g. round, elevation, rifle support, et cetera) and environmental conditions. You aren't likely to see misses in grass at that distance. If your target happens to be in a dry mud patch, and you have excellent optics and recoil control, you might get lucky and see where your miss went. A first attempt hit beyond even 800 yards with a mil-spec round is not a high probability event. Follow-up shot adjustments will also be difficult. Lastly, the NATO round is at 60,000 PSI versus 62,000 on the 308 that I shoot. That 3.33% makes a different long distances. But if you are aiming at a vehicle or another larger target, I'm sure they do do damage beyond 1,000 meters. It's a 30 foot (not inch) drop at 1,200.
Either way, I'm glad it's working for them and it appears to be a great rifle. AR-10s are not the most reliable rifles ever built. Their rifles appear to be well spec'd too.

The benefit to Ukraine of claiming "1200" when in fact they've had a single operator make a kill with the weapon at more like 1173, and most of their confirmed kills are more like 700 is in the fear it might evoke in opponent forces and the panache it conveys for Ukrainian forces. an accurized AR 10(like the M110 or SR25) hitting targets out to1200 meters isnt much different than the UAR-10 hitting them at 1200 meters. Its the same basic platform (maybe a different gas system or short stroke piston) with the same potential. Accuracy might be a little different, barrel length might help with a little extra energy..But chances are its the round they are using as opposed to the rifle. M118LR is possible, difficult but possible. 175smk..Hand loads, maybe? 1200 meters is a very difficult shot for the 308. Its running out of energy very fast past 800 meters.

.308 is considered too heavy for a standard issue rifle. Difficulty handling a .308 rifle in full-auto is a main issue, along with ammunition carry capacity. For GPMG use, .308 is considered a little light. With modern ballistics technology, the 6.8mm can outperform .308 at less weight and slightly more compact form. However, it will be difficult to push a new standard ammunition without a significantly obvious advantage, and I don’t think 6.8mm is there, yet. The argument for the 6.8mm GPMG is pretty attractive, though it still needs lots of proofing.

The moment the 6.8mm becomes standard military ammo, there quickly will be plenty of that ammo available.
The argument about to much that can go wrong has been used so many times about all sorts of weapons in history, but history has shown that it doesn't matter so much if many things can go wrong if the product is very well made and the quality control is strict, because very few things go wrong then.
It has been the weapons that have not been made well that have gone wrong, no matter how simple or complex they have been made.
I am all for moving away from the 5.56 NATO as I am far from satisfied with that cartridge, so I think going to the 6.8mm is a good thing.
I have been plenty happy with the 7.62 NATO, but I think the 6.8mm is a better overall cartridge to use in many different weapon platforms and that is much of the reason for why they have decided to go for the 6.8mm.
Many soldiers also struggle a lot with the recoil of the 7.62 NATO, but I think much of that could be fixed with good suppressors.
There is only thing I am worried about when it comes to the 6.8mm and that is the question of making the soldiers good enough shots with it as it takes a lot of practice to become good with it and that will cost a lot of time and money and I am not confident that the military will prioritize it as much as they should do.
There are plenty of soldiers that are far from good enough with the 5.56 NATO and I fear it will become worse with the 6.8mm.

It's even a decent hunting rifle for some big game applications. It's a bit heavy though. Not surprised the Russians like it when they get a hold of one. Good Optics combined with decent ammo, a well-made barrel, and trigger adjustable stock to fit a marksman properly make for an easier-to-shoot rifle. It is sinful that to find this out both sides must kill each other. As for some of the other posts here, there is nothing wrong with the 5.56. it's light, you can carry more, little recoil so most will shoot better, and within most engagement distances it's plenty for the task. And the 5.56/223 is a fine hunting cartridge for some applications. Hogs in Texas come to mind. With the right Scope and mount set up 1200 meters is doable for a skilled marksman. It's a long way, things get a little funny once the bullet slows to sub-sonic. A lot of things have to go right. Still, it's a very long shot for a 7.62 NATO round.

That said, as you alluded to, it definitely has its limitations. Especially with standard issue ball ammo. You won't be dropping a boar at 1,200m with green tips. It's gonna slap with like 12lb of force.

I can tell you one thing for sure and that is that this gun in 7.62x51 NATO is no 1000+ yards sniper gun at all.
This gun is in reality not a real sniper gun either, but there are always some journalists or others that love to attach the word "sniper" to any gun with a scope on.
This is as one said in this video, more of a marksman's gun that a marksman in a normal rifleman's squad would use.
And for that use out to about 800 yards, it is a very good weapon, and you can always try longer shots with it, but I very much doubt they have good scopes for that on these guns.
In general are no guns in 7.62x51 very good for sniping at 1000+ yards.
And that goes for any 6.5 caliber gun too.
      Can it work? Yes
      Is it ideal? No
Specially when you consider that many have body armor and extremely few non specialist snipers are able to shoot headshots at long distances.
For a 800+ sniper rifle, you want to use minimum a 300 Win Mag and if you start to stretch it out to 1200 yards and more, then a 338 Lapua Magnum or 338 Norma Magnum is by far the best choice.
When it comes to Geezah1's comment about a 6.5, then he is clearly correct about one thing, and that is the fact that a rather fast 6.5 cartridge is better than a 7.62x51 NATO if you want to snipe at 1000+ yards.
But with any of those two, you better hope the enemy is not using a decent body armor if you hit them in their torso.
And just a small correction for you, is it 6.5mm and not 6.5cm.
