That sheath really looks good. Not for metal but knife sheaths or any kind of leather a blow dryer and Vaseline petroleum jelly. Just glob the jelly on at one spot and use the hair dryer to heat and push it along. It will liquify like water and soak into the grain of old dry leather. You can take old stiff leather and watch it wilt into a flexible limp noodle. You can do hard bees wax the same way on the ratiest old wood you can find. It will make a thin coating that will go into the grain and put a paper thin even layer on top that can be polished. Warning on the Vaseline jelly. It will open up the cracks in the leather so they can be seen. But it will be durable and, for an old sows ear, it won't look too bad.

Thanks for the tip. I have some leather 80 years old and should be a good test.
Dave thanks for your videos, I watch all of them here in Philippines. So for nice and robust patina on a blade it’s good to use also ferric chloride - this is what they do very common for commercial/manufacturing knifes. Ah, I also worry about Patriot (Dwaine) He just disappeared that is. I hope he is ok, and nothing bad happened with him. Anyway God bless you Dave. Always stay safe and put your head on a swivel (Patriot words)
Thank so very much, I appreciate your kind words! Great tip on the ferric chloride, I knew I would forget some. In hindsight, I should have mentioned in the video that oxidation won’t take place without oxygen! The air did not get to the encapsulated mustard blade and that’s why the blade wasn’t as affected. Hopefully someone can clue us in on Dwayne 🙏🏻. God bless you as well!
I’ve been a full time butcher for 40 years and I will take a carbon blade over stainless every time for a whole list of reasons. Also prefer wood handles over any other material for comfort. I use mustard on my hunting knives (mostly 1095 also A2) and noticed if I just barely dab mustard on the blade it gets a darker finish. Less mustard (real thin dabs) seems to gets better colors. I kinda agree if it’s carbon you should put a patina on it.
Thank you, I know it’s controversial but I highly respect the opinion from a professional, such as yourself, over a collector of high end knives! I neglected to say in the video that the blade that was encapsulated with mustard had little change because oxidation can’t occur without oxygen! Thanks for taking the time to comment and watch my video, have a great day!
Great thoughts on this subject! Not really a fan of forced patina. I have plenty of knives with beautiful natural aged patina. But only if I get one that is badly pitted I will knock the rust off smooth out the surface and coat with cold blue finish for a nice look and takes the eyes away from the pitting. My general rule is still if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!
Hey Dave, I've been loving your videos of all of your creativity and craftsmanship. I've been wondering if there is any way to get my hands on some of your inventions, do you have an Etsy shop or anything like? If so, I'd be a fast customer!
Very kind of you to say! I will eventually have to start selling some items due to lack of space for storage! They will go on eBay, my account name is the same, Blademan175. I will make a video announcing it when I do. Thanks and have a nice day!
Maybe those copper rivets come with a coating on them to protect them. I would maybe wire wheel them with a Dremel and see if that works to get them prepped for the patina.
I worked in waste water treatment and know that purple stain very well. You got lucky with the navel jelly. Worked in the lab 47 years and had to use the emergency shower only once. To me even mustard is just more chemicals. Love your video, thank you for leaving that accident in the video. I know sh*t happens. My job depended on that.
That’s a great safety record you have! My hands don’t work like they used to, glad it wasn’t as bad as it could have been! Thanks for the comment and the chuckle, have a great day!
The old mil spec Parkerization is also still available from Brownells. I use EEZOX , and since 1987 I haven't had any major rusting problem on my Cold Steel Carbon V outdoor tools. I do not work for them or sell EEZOX
Nothing like a good well set magnetite dark black patina on a kitchen knife. As long as ya keep it clean and dry its like the old gray wrench finish. Can't beat it off with a hammer boss!😂
Walter Sorrells did a video called "Caring for carbon steel knives" , using a version of an old gunsmith process that converted the Fe302 to Fe304 , from red rust to magnetite. Far more stable and durable finish than most forced patinas

@blademan175 haha I could imagine that storage is probably running low haha, I'll have to keep my eye out for that video!

I tried that, didn’t seem to make a difference. I’m beginning to think that they have some other alloy in them. Thanks for watching!
@blademan175 Yeah more than likely more tin in them
Crushed black walnut hulls mixed with water will stain steel they use to stain gun barrels with it
Thanks! I once made a very nice colored wood stain with pecan shells! Thanks for watching!
Raw potatoes will pot that blue hue on carbon steel
Yes, forgot to include potatoes!

If you're interested, Solingen is pronounced ZAW-lin-gen, with the g pronounced as a g rather than a j.
I am, and I appreciate it! I will try to remember that as I have been pronouncing it the American English version my whole life! Thanks for watching!

Brownells is where I used to get all my parkerizing and nickel plating supplies. It was fun playing around with condiments!
