I want to share the many tools and equipment I have made and modified. Many items were inspired by other TH-camrs and include things used for camping, bushcrafting and survival, along with the workshop. I love to cook so you can expect to see many videos on that! Knives are tools and I plan many videos showing knives I have made and knives I own. I have some pretty cool antiques I want to share. Leatherwork, blacksmithing, crafts, gardening, cooking, woodworking, metalworking, gun smithing, motorcycle restoration, boat restoration, appliance repair, fishing and sewing is the short list. I have many interests so, hopefully, I will have a video on something you are interested in! Thanks to anyone watching and I appreciate you subscribing to my channel!

How much soap is added ?
I don’t measure that but about 1/2 ounce per quart.
Those knives cleaned up great hope you find some good ones at Webster
Thanks, I really hope to get the chance to get there soon!
I watched Beyond Ballistics' video a few months ago and made a batch. I got great results removing rust from an old axe head and some old tools. I need to remove some rust stains from the stainless steel on my sailboat (Baba 35 PH) so I mixed in some fumed silica (Cabosil) enough to make a gel the consistency of honey and painted it onto the pulpit, chain plates, etc. In a few hours the rust was gone. (I got the Cabosil idea from Practical Sailor's article on normalizing rust on stainless steel.)
Fantastic idea! I love it, and I still have some cabosil lying around so will definitely remember that tip. I had a custom Bruce Robert’s 33 masthead sloop but sold it a few years ago. Grew up sailing, got into motor boats and became a charter boat captain. Retired now and making videos. 🫤. Thanks so much for the great tip and have a great weekend!
Nice work, brother. Cool sheath for the hawksbill and creative hacks for the last one. The pommel definitely has a Buck look to it. So many people modeled the Marbles stacked leather handle, it’s hard to say without a tang stamp. I bet someone will eventually recognize it. Have a great day!
Thanks for chiming in! Everyday is a school day, much appreciated! Have a great one yourself!
I would have thought you would get similar results using plain white vinegar. It is very inexpensive too, and much less fuss than having to prepare solutions and accurately measuring ingredients. As for damaging the base metal, this should be academic and should not in any way hurt tools or the like. I cannot think of anything valuable needing de-rusting which could be thus impaired.
In the 3rd video I made on testing I addressed this, thanks!
I had a buck that looked a lot like the kinfolk, had the curved pommel like that ... But it was stamped buck.
Thanks for the info. I suspect it had a tang stamp that was ground off at some point. It was badly sharpened, thanks!
Tip: tried looking at the camera, it frustrating watching your post
Sorry, I am recording on my IPad and the camera is on the side. I hope to earn enough money to buy a proper camera. Thanks for the tip!
Hi... great video... do you think there is a way to use this on cast iron... like maybe a vintage wood stove? You can exactly soak a wood stove... any ideas? TIA👍
I have had good success restoring old long hand saws by laying on paper towels and keeping them wet with evaporust, should work with this as well although it would be hard to reuse it. Good luck and thanks!
Would this work for a small gas tank?
I have not tried, but I don’t see why not. If it’s really bad I would try the solution along with some nuts and bolts you can shake around to get the heavy rust broke free, good luck and thanks!
In Wales UK there was a programme called on the farm and the farmer made up a solution citric acid in water at a strength of 40%, and he put a rusty saw into this solution and left it overnight. The result was a clean blade but the solution had turned a greyish colour?
Interesting, mine turned dark yellow and then brownish color. Maybe the addition of baking soda prevents base metal erosion, which would be gray, that’s the theory anyway, thanks for sharing and watching!
I've seen in the comments as well as your explanation that the purpose of the baking soda being added to the acid is to bring it down to a pH level that dznt harm the metal ... ok that makes sense... fair enough... here's my observation : wouldn't it be advantageous to "get a good blend/level" & subsequently use pH paper to get the "correct" level & then reverse engineer the exact amounts of whatever mixture acid etc one chooses to employ ? What I'm getting @ is one "could" control the pH by simply adding water only to an acid ( of whatever type ) and obtain the "proper" mix ? Does this make sense to you ?
Makes perfect sense and I actually forgot to use litmus paper in the 3rd and final testing video! I mixed it based on beyondballistics recipe because I felt like he already found the “sweet spot” with all his testing. Thanks for the tip and for watching!
Nice finds. That hawk bill is super and you got it at a great price.
Thanks, my last video shows it restored with a case!
The problem with putting an acid and a soda together is that they cancel each other out. It foams up, sure, but that just makes it LOOK like it's doing something. The acid is what does the work, that's why you can just use vinegar.
Great! Thanks! I took note!
The bicarbonate really isn’t needed..all it does is weaken the solution…the important thing is to keep a close watch on the items..the more bicarbonate you put in the longer it will take…..and… it will dissolve steel if left long enough. Evapo-Rust…is a real rip off…it doesn’t last long at all…I would never buy it again… Citric acid or white vinegar work well….but needs to be checked at regular intervals before it starts to attack the steel… He sounds like Burl Ives..😉
Hi I am a fixer/maker/improver also and saw your mention of a pvc holster clip or knife sheaths and cant find the video, can you tell me how to find it? Thanks
Sorry, took a minute to recall. In the ultimate walking stick video about the 12 minute mark I talk about small plastic clips and how I made them. Hope that helps you. I had a jig for the holster clips but just made it with wood scraps, knocked out a couple dozen and chucked the jig. My latest video….a unique folder slip has a pvc clip I made. Thanks!
I've got 2 ,a Camilus and a kamp king and a K-Bar
Self reliant solutions to problems like this appeal to me😅
$ ?
If I found this video last year, I wouldn't had spent almost $100 on evabo-rust to restore four Humvee wheels. Thank you for sharing this.
Yeah, that stuff is expensive!
Great job. Thank you
Thanks for watching and commenting!
That's a awesome slip a friend of mine said there's a guy at the Webster flea market selling old butcher knives and kitchen knives for 25cents a piece or 5 for a dollar wanted to let ya know
I’ll try and make it to that flea market soon!
I'm going to try this solution in an ultra sonic cleaning machine to see how it works there!
I was told it works faster! Thanks!
Do you use a rust inhibitor after you de rust?
Sorry I didn’t mention that. Yes, the items look as if they have been parkerized and hold oil very well. I use mineral oil on knives but also any light oil works. Thanks for watching!
I recently discovered a new hobby, restoring antique drill presses, specifically, Craftsman models 80, 100, and 150 drill presses made by King Seeley from the late 1940's, up to the early 1060's. I'm not really a fan of the ones made by Emerson, after King Seeley. A TH-camr, Jeff's Shop, has several videos showing the very detailed process, and it's actually pretty fun to do as well. He uses undiluted Simple Green to remove any oils that might be on the parts, and if you allow your parts to sit in the Simple Green long enough, it can actually remove paint. After rinsing, the next step he does is placing the parts in water with nothing more than citric acid, about a shot glass of citric acid to 1 gallon of water. That actually works pretty well to remove rust, but there is a small caveat to that. Zamek, which is very commonly used to make pulleys that are on electric motors, can actually become brittle when soaked in the water, citric acid solution. He is willing to soak the zamek parts in it, but for no more than an hour. Zamek, like aluminum, does not rust, so I'm not willing to try it on my first restorations, maybe somewhere down the road, but not now, I don't have very many spare parts. I'll just chuck the pulleys up in my lathe, sand them up to 3000 grit, and put a mirror finish on them. I have found that the citric acid and water solution he uses does give off a bit of a foul odor, especially after 24 hours or so. I might have to give your recipe a shot to see how it works for my needs. Great video!!!!!!! I am a first time viewer, and a new subscriber to your channel.
I love your new hobby! I’ll check out Jeff’s shop, probably seen him before. Sounds like you do a great restoration and make it better than new! I restored my grandfathers benchtop drill press many years ago. It was a Sears Dunlap from the 40’s. Needed new bushings so I tore it down and cleaned and painted everything. I no longer have it but I kept it in the family. I still have, and use, his Craftsman jig saw from the 40’s. I still have the original paperwork for it. I also have his Craftsman 6x48 belt sander which I still use. I think he bought all of them at the same time. The sander still has the original bushings as I always oil it before use. I LOVE old tools. Thanks for the tips and for subscribing!
White vinegar works amazing
Yes, vinegar is a good choice too!
All that looked like surface rust to me, and the colour of the liquid after confirmed it to me.
See parts 2&3
Credit where it is due is everything to the creators. Much respect for doing the right thing Captain.
Wow the cleaner is so awesome and useful, you experiment like a professional chemist. I am so impressed with your videos, hope you will have more great and useful videos like this, thank you
Thank you for your kind words and for watching!
Would this work on a corrugated iron roof, thanks
The 2nd video shows how it affected galvanizing!
you could do better on a wire wheel...
I said that in video 1&3
Attach magnesium to metal surface
I am going to try this solution on everything I own now being the magnesium will only really be good for my toolbox, lawn mower deck and wheel barrel after I get it delivered.
would you have any thoughts on how to make a thicker solution that could be sprayed on a vertical surface and then washed off later?
Maybe add a lot more soap so it clings? Thanks for watching!
@@blademan175 Sounds logical I will try it and get back at you.
@@blademan175replace the citric acid with ketchup, and leave out the water
I used to use what you made up there on old vintage beer cans. It was great did not remove the paint or the lettering. Just the rust works great.
That’s a great tip, thanks for sharing!
@ yes it works very well
I am convinced, we need this formula. The Philippine Islands has been a wonderful retirement location for me. Early on, I decided to only purchase and maintain the basic tools needed for regular repairs. Fighting rust and corrosion should not have to be a daily activity. The often super humid environment is unforgiving. When I find a "borrowed" tool that was not replaced in its proper place, there is often rust on the surface. When you do not have free time to remove that rust and seal the metal when discovered, the rust accumulates. I thank you for testing and presenting a great way to combat an ongoing problem.
I am so glad this solution helps you! I live in a humid environment too and rust is always a problem.
How do you do your sewing?
I hand stitch leather, I use a white brand sewing machine for everything else, thanks!
Makes no sense the acid will neutralise the alkaline? Kitchen voodoo!
Watch episodes 2&3 for the testing
Where do you get citric acid?
Amazon or the grocery store, watch episodes 2&3, thanks!
Hook blade my favorite

Nice video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
?? 9 volt battery using your solution??
Nope, watch 3rd episode just posted!
What a great voice and accent you have sir. good recipie will have to try.
Thanks so much!
Try a strong Salt solution in water and tape 2 bare wires to a AA Battery & put the ends in the solution along with the part to be treated - It removes the rust by "Electrolysis". 🔋🚠🔪 you'll see the fizzing when it's doing its stuff ! Keep the battery out of the water. (I haven't tried a square, 9 volt battery yet - might work even better ? )
I enjoy old knife finds. If only you could get the story on them. That little one that was sharpened so much. What a story. Looking forward to what you do for it.
Yes, it is amazing the stories these knives could tell!

Great video did you say you would be at the flea market in Mont Dora Saturday after Thanksgiving if so I'll see if my son can come check your booth I'm looking for some tools to work on knives
Yes, i will be there with a trailer load of tools I need gone!
using your recipe, I made a gallon. Love the results. I cleaned up old, rusted files and rasps, small cast leads pot and some old railroad spikes. All cleaned up nice. thanks for your videos.
Glad to hear, thanks so much for your support!
To really get into the grooves and into something like the knife, you can make a cheap cleaner. Ultrasonic cleaners are $$ but they also make ones that use bubbles. Same “scrubbing principle as US cleaner but more gentle. But you can use a fish tank pump too. If the aerating stone is too small, make a grid out of tube or small pipe and make small holes. You’ll get a gentle scrubbing that can get into small spaces
Great info thanks for sharing that!
I was surprised at the addition of baking soda but it really does work. thanks for sharing your results
You’re welcome 😊
