About ascension. Basically ascension is the final goal of cultivation, though not many are able to ascend. Some people cultivate their entire lives and never become gods. Some very talented cultivators stay as humans, but become immortal. Though in TGCF, unlike some other cultivation stories, ascension works a bit different. Sure, you CAN ascend purely through cultivation. Mu Qing ascended this way, for example. But you can also ascend through a single heroic action. In Xie Lian's case he did both. He cultivated for a long time and was very diligent, but he was also a remarkable and heroic person and for this reason he ascended at an extremely young age. He wasn't chosen by a person, or a God. Definitely not chosen by the Emperor. He's just the most powerful God, but he used to be human too. Gods are technically "chosen" by the universe. Also, in TGCF ascension is in your fate. Some people are destined to ascend, and some aren't. If a person isn't meant to ascend, there's nothing they can do to change that. This will be relevant in the novels.

You can never yap too much about Hua Cheng or fangirl too hard over Xie Lian. Just to be clear - the donghua will not include any openly BL scenes because Chinese censorship is stupidly strict. But the creators of the show do push every boundary and slide in every hint and ramp up all the romance elements they can get away with. We all know this is a romance from reading the books or hearing the tnfo, so we can feverishly pick out all these things and squeal like dolphins whenever there is flirting or tension or music cues. The only way to ascend as a god is to do something extraordinary - not "good", just amazing and impossible for a normal human to achieve. If a god makes you their assistant/raises you up to Middle Heaven, then they basically are giving you a chunk of their own power so that you can be useful. This is what Xie Lian originally did for Feng Xin and Mu Qing. They later did an amazing feat on their own and properly ascended. Of course, Middle Official's have way better chances of finding and then performing amazing tasks that most humans who hope to ascend one day. The Emperor only realized Xie Lian was destined to ascend - he did not help make it happen or choose Xie Lian personally.
Thank you for these clarifications! Yeah, I kinda guessed we wouldn't see anything explicitly BL in the donghua, but I am still amazed that the books apparently are canonically so! That said, I'm used to surviving on meager subtext only in shows/movies/books---I'm sure I'll enjoy all the attempts at pushing boundaries... especially knowing what the source material is! I actually like that in the donghua they decided to hide these, it makes it more mysterious and they don’t talk about it right away. It will be hinted at sometime in the show, but you learn more about it in the books. Also I really appreciate your discussions and theories throughout the episode. TGCF has a complex plot with complex characters, and there’s so many details to take note of. It’s not a chill watch anime 😂 I feel like a lot of people get confused and don’t like this show as much because they don’t pay attention to the world building and cultural references, so your attention to detail for this is fantastic! you're gonna like the next episode ! also you pick up stuff really fast! this is by far my favorite episode as we get a formal introduction to our bad boy love interest! so the second episode he was revealed as "dangerous" but then again, Xuan Ji and Qi Rong (the green ghost) are also seen as dangerous. this episode though we learn that butterfly man or Hua Cheng is more than just dangerous as he is called "a headache to the heavenly realm". the book, however remarks that the heavenly officials both fear and respect him, mostly for the amount of balls this man has for just strolling into heaven, challenging 33 gods and actually winning. white no face aka the white-clothed calamity aka Bai Wuxiang is a very important character but isn't mentioned much in s1. also Bai Wuxiang translates to White No-Face. also, Hua Cheng's official title is Crimson Rain Sought Flower. Hua Cheng (花城) "flower" "city" but is also translated as "city of flowers"
I have known Hua Cheng for a grand total of 5 minutes but I can already tell he has the biggest balls in the entirety of heaven, hell and the mortal realm-- Thank you for this additional info, they both fear AND respect him... I love that actually
So, on how ascension works. If you do something great (not good or evil, just something great) the universe makes you a god. No one personally makes you a god but yourself. As for Xie Lian and the Emperor, the Emperor didn't make him a god, he just knew that Xie Lian is going to ascend and wanted to take a look at him. A god can take you as their assistant, but that doesn't make you a god, that just gives you more time to figure it out yourself. That's actually why i find Pei Xiu so fascinating. He never was a deputy, Pei Ming didn't give him anything, he just ascended himself at the age of twenty and they are working in more of a partnership (older relative-younger relative) than master-servant status. That kinda amazes me
Also, the English dub says the four devils, but the most common translation and the one used in the books is the four calamities. The green ghost, Qi Rong, is not a devastation level ghost like the other three, he’s only a wrath, albeit a strong one. He was just grouped in with the others to make it even.

Nicknames by order of birth are common.

Info for your conspiracy board: the ghost kings are known like that because they reach the level devastatio level, they can destroy a kingdom. Qi Rong - Green ghost or Night-touring green lantern, he make the forest of bodies. He Xuan - Ship sinking black water, he is calm most of the times Bai Wuxian - the White clothed Calamity, his name means white, no face, was killed by the heavenly emperor. Hua Cheng - Crimson rain sought flower (Xue Yu Tan Hua, is so cute to hear it) the name is flower and city, but i think together means red or something similar (that is why Xie Lian say it suits him). Qi Rong is actually a near-devastation ghost, but they include him to be the four demons or the four great calamities. Opposing to the four famous tales, these are 4 gods that make the more amazing things to ascend: Xie Lian - The crown prince who pleased the gods (Tai Zi Yue Shen) Shi Qingxuan - The young lord who poured wine Pei Ming - The general who broke his sword Yushi Huang - The princess who slit her throat

I don't know if it's been mentioned in the comments yet, but seasons 1 and 2 currently cover book 1 and about 1/2 of book 2 (in the physical copies). Anyway, I have watched a lot of tgcf reactors but so far your theories and ways you input your thoughts have been by far my favorite. I really like the board too and I think people would agree that it is really fun and interesting.

I read tgcf when it was still translated in websites no official or anything, danmei ( means Chinese BL) wasn't popular as much as today. @@SpacedOutPuffin My favorite is Mo Dao Zu Shi( it is also my first danmei ) which is the second novel written by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu the author of TGCF(tgcf is the third novel) Mo dao zu shi also has a donghua ( chinese animation ) it has 3 season and drama ( 50 episodes named The Untamed ) and it is finished. After tgcf if you have enough time and wanna continue i can recommend mdzs.

Another fun non-spoilery fact - the English voice actors ship the characters and their romance. When Hua Cheng's voice actor was asked (at a fan convention) what he wanted to see from the series was "I want them to bang". The voice actor for Xie Lien worked on the English dub's script and has read the entire series.
8:18 Honestly, when I have seen a character who hides their neck in world of supernatural, It usually hides a deathwound or a scar from attempted/successful hanging. With wrists also hidden? It screams either suicide attempt, or torture scars.

This is not clarified in the donhua yet, but it is explained in the books already. The thing around XL's neck is a chacle symbol of his banishment and bound his spiritual power (mana in the English dub). In fact, he has two chacles, one on his neck and the other one in his right ankle.
BUTTERFLY MAN TIME BUTTERFLY MAN TIME BUTTERFLY MAN TIME! :D 1:28 so i can see how you would think that bc this is basically the case for live action "BLs" as those are censored/banned in china, donghuas are too but they can usually get away with a bit more obvious gayness, but you still probably won't see any gay kisses or overt declarations of love. however, most live action dramas and donghuas that are labeled as "BL" or "bromance", like tgcf, are adaptations of novels which are explicitly gay, as writing gay webnovels is not banned (and they are pretty much all webnovels, as published books in china are also more censored... tgcf was originally published as a webnovel, but when it got popular enough to have a printed version in china, that version was edited to be more censored, although the author did her best to keep the original meaning there). technically the tgcf donghua is censored to an extent too, you'll probably continue watching it and think it's really gay (and it is), but there are a few scenes that got censored (off the top of my head, i can only think of one that happens in season 2, I can't think of any in season 1. but i can point them out as you come across those scenes if you want! obviously don't want to say anything now bc spoilers) 11:45 when i first read tgcf i was so shocked at xiao ying's death. not the fact that she did die necessarily, but how it was treated by the narrative. it helps set the tone and lend seriousness to the gravity of the things that are happening in the story. with fantasy stories like this where you have larger than life characters and events, it can be easy to lose sight of the risks and consequences at stake in any given moment, but mxtx (the author) uses moments like xiao ying's death to bring the viewer/reader back to reality. it's so sad :( 20:19 to summarize the Four Calamities/Four Devils: Hua Cheng (our boy!) - Devastation Rank, his Four Calamities moniker is "Crimson Rain Sought Flower" Qi Rong - Wrath (but a very strong one), Four Calamities Moniker is Green Amor/Green Night Light Walker (or the other translations i mentioned before... but you get the point) Black Amor - Devastation, water demon. We only know his moniker at this point, but the more common translation of it is "Black Water Sinking Ships" or just "Black Water" for short White Calamity aka "Bai Wuxiang" - Devastation, the most terrifying of the four. actually Bai Wuxiang is also a moniker and not a proper name, it literally translates to "White No Face". he's usually referred to as that or "White-Clothed Calamity" 24:29 not confirming or denying anything to avoid spoilers, but during this scene in the novel, the narration states that "the name Hua Cheng was very obviously fake". it literally translates to "flower city" so it doesn't exactly sound like a name someone would give their child in Chinese, do with that info what you will! 31:58 spelled "Shi Wudu", the god of water and wealth 43:32 the proper name for "Mount Furnace" is "Mount Tong'lu" btw :) (seriously, i do love the dub, but some of the translation choices made for the proper names are a bit odd i'm not going to lie) loving your reactions as always, it's so fun hearing your theories, i think when you're further along in the story you'll have a fun time looking back on it lol! on to the next episode!

There are a LOT of things which are hinted or mentioned from an early point but aren't revealed until much later in the story. TGCF is a long story(8 books) and the 1st season covers the entire 1st book and second season covers around 70% of the 2nd book. I would really recommend reading the books, perhaps after you watch the season 2, because the books just have so much more detail and fun little info about the characters and the plot which can, more often than not, become important for future plot points. We cant even say for sure if the donghua will be able to cover the whole story since tgcf is such a long story and it's BL(considering china's increasing censorship TGCF may never get the chance to be completed imo) so i'd really recommend you to read the books if you're enjoying the story Some extra info for fun: While the official english books are divided in 8 books for publication convenience, the original chinese version was divided into 5 books. - The first book contained what the 1st and 2nd season of the donghua cover [book 1 and 70% book 2 of official eng release] - The second book is a complete flashback arc which shows the story of xie lian's first ascension and how he first got banished. [End portion of book 2 and 50% book 3 in eng books] - The third book picks up right where the 1st book left off. [rest of book 3 and book 4, 5 & 30% book 6 of eng books] - The fourth book is again a flashback arc and continues the story of xie lian's past after his first banishment. [Remaining portion of book 6 in eng books] - The fifth and final books picks up right where third book had left off. [Book 7 & 8 in eng book]

I must say, I much prefer (potentially maybe) HuaCheng’s voice in Mandarin. If you’ve listened to the Chinese dub, which version of his voice do you prefer? I just feel like the Chinese one sounds much younger and less “trying-too-hard-to-impress”. Like, the Chinese one is more on the cute side and the English one is more on the suave side. Not bashing on the English dub, it was still fantastic. It’s just a preference thing. But yes, how cool is the introduction to Hua Cheng, huh? Agreed. The English VA is far too obvious for my preference. He’s a great guy who’s done wonders with getting the dub done, but unfortunately I still don’t like his Hua Cheng acting. The Mandarin VA is far more in keeping with the character of HC at this point.

He cultivated for a long time and was very diligent, but he was also a remarkable and heroic person and for this reason he ascended at an extremely young age. He wasn't chosen by a person, or a God. Definitely not chosen by the Emperor. He's just the most powerful God, but he used to be human too. Gods are technically "chosen" by the universe.
Also, in TGCF ascension is in your fate. Some people are destined to ascend, and some aren't. If a person isn't meant to ascend, there's nothing they can do to change that. This will be relevant in the novels.

It's so exciting to watch this with you and your board is as amazing as your sleuthing.
You can never yap too much about Hua Cheng or fangirl too hard over Xie Lian. Just to be clear - the donghua will not include any openly BL scenes because Chinese censorship is stupidly strict. But the creators of the show do push every boundary and slide in every hint and ramp up all the romance elements they can get away with. We all know this is a romance from reading the books or hearing the tnfo, so we can feverishly pick out all these things and squeal like dolphins whenever there is flirting or tension or music cues.
The only way to ascend as a god is to do something extraordinary - not "good", just amazing and impossible for a normal human to achieve. If a god makes you their assistant/raises you up to Middle Heaven, then they basically are giving you a chunk of their own power so that you can be useful. This is what Xie Lian originally did for Feng Xin and Mu Qing. They later did an amazing feat on their own and properly ascended. Of course, Middle Official's have way better chances of finding and then performing amazing tasks that most humans who hope to ascend one day. The Emperor only realized Xie Lian was destined to ascend - he did not help make it happen or choose Xie Lian personally.
Thank you for these clarifications! Yeah, I kinda guessed we wouldn't see anything explicitly BL in the donghua, but I am still amazed that the books apparently are canonically so! That said, I'm used to surviving on meager subtext only in shows/movies/books---I'm sure I'll enjoy all the attempts at pushing boundaries... especially knowing what the source material is!

About the bandages, fun fact. In the books, he takes off his bandages in like Chapter 2 briefly, so you know the answer to what that’s all about. I actually like that in the donghua they decided to hide these, it makes it more mysterious and they don’t talk about it right away. It will be hinted at sometime in the show, but you learn more about it in the books.
Also I really appreciate your discussions and theories throughout the episode. TGCF has a complex plot with complex characters, and there’s so many details to take note of. It’s not a chill watch anime 😂 I feel like a lot of people get confused and don’t like this show as much because they don’t pay attention to the world building and cultural references, so your attention to detail for this is fantastic! you're gonna like the next episode ! also you pick up stuff really fast! this is by far my favorite episode as we get a formal introduction to our bad boy love interest! so the second episode he was revealed as "dangerous" but then again, Xuan Ji and Qi Rong (the green ghost) are also seen as dangerous. this episode though we learn that butterfly man or Hua Cheng is more than just dangerous as he is called "a headache to the heavenly realm". the book, however remarks that the heavenly officials both fear and respect him, mostly for the amount of balls this man has for just strolling into heaven, challenging 33 gods and actually winning.
white no face aka the white-clothed calamity aka Bai Wuxiang is a very important character but isn't mentioned much in s1. also Bai Wuxiang translates to White No-Face.
also, Hua Cheng's official title is Crimson Rain Sought Flower.
Hua Cheng (花城) "flower" "city" but is also translated as "city of flowers"

So, on how ascension works. If you do something great (not good or evil, just something great) the universe makes you a god. No one personally makes you a god but yourself. As for Xie Lian and the Emperor, the Emperor didn't make him a god, he just knew that Xie Lian is going to ascend and wanted to take a look at him.
A god can take you as their assistant, but that doesn't make you a god, that just gives you more time to figure it out yourself.
That's actually why i find Pei Xiu so fascinating. He never was a deputy, Pei Ming didn't give him anything, he just ascended himself at the age of twenty and they are working in more of a partnership (older relative-younger relative) than master-servant status. That kinda amazes me

The green ghost, Qi Rong, is not a devastation level ghost like the other three, he’s only a wrath, albeit a strong one. He was just grouped in with the others to make it even.

Xie Lian - The crown prince who pleased the gods (Tai Zi Yue Shen)
Shi Qingxuan - The young lord who poured wine
Pei Ming - The general who broke his sword

I don't know if it's been mentioned in the comments yet, but seasons 1 and 2 currently cover book 1 and about 1/2 of book 2 (in the physical copies). Anyway, I have watched a lot of tgcf reactors but so far your theories and ways you input your thoughts have been by far my favorite. I really like the board too and I think people would agree that it is really fun and interesting.

I read tgcf when it was still translated in websites no official or anything, danmei ( means Chinese BL) wasn't popular as much as today. Just about 100 chapters or something TAT TGCF isn't my favorite but still i love it a lot and i become excited as you learn more about the story.

After tgcf if you have enough time and wanna continue i can recommend mdzs.

Another fun non-spoilery fact - the English voice actors ship the characters and their romance. When Hua Cheng's voice actor was asked (at a fan convention) what he wanted to see from the series was "I want them to bang". The voice actor for Xie Lien worked on the English dub's script and has read the entire series.

This is not clarified in the donhua yet, but it is explained in the books already. The thing around XL's neck is a chacle symbol of his banishment and bound his spiritual power (mana in the English dub). In fact, he has two chacles, one on his neck and the other one in his right ankle.

1:28 so i can see how you would think that bc this is basically the case for live action "BLs" as those are censored/banned in china, donghuas are too but they can usually get away with a bit more obvious gayness, but you still probably won't see any gay kisses or overt declarations of love. however, most live action dramas and donghuas that are labeled as "BL" or "bromance", like tgcf, are adaptations of novels which are explicitly gay, as writing gay webnovels is not banned (and they are pretty much all webnovels, as published books in china are also more censored... tgcf was originally published as a webnovel, but when it got popular enough to have a printed version in china, that version was edited to be more censored, although the author did her best to keep the original meaning there).
technically the tgcf donghua is censored to an extent too, you'll probably continue watching it and think it's really gay (and it is), but there are a few scenes that got censored (off the top of my head, i can only think of one that happens in season 2, I can't think of any in season 1. but i can point them out as you come across those scenes if you want! obviously don't want to say anything now bc spoilers)
11:45 when i first read tgcf i was so shocked at xiao ying's death. not the fact that she did die necessarily, but how it was treated by the narrative. it helps set the tone and lend seriousness to the gravity of the things that are happening in the story. with fantasy stories like this where you have larger than life characters and events, it can be easy to lose sight of the risks and consequences at stake in any given moment, but mxtx (the author) uses moments like xiao ying's death to bring the viewer/reader back to reality. it's so sad :(
20:19 to summarize the Four Calamities/Four Devils:
Hua Cheng (our boy!) - Devastation Rank, his Four Calamities moniker is "Crimson Rain Sought Flower"
Qi Rong - Wrath (but a very strong one), Four Calamities Moniker is Green Amor/Green Night Light Walker (or the other translations i mentioned before... but you get the point)
Black Amor - Devastation, water demon. We only know his moniker at this point, but the more common translation of it is "Black Water Sinking Ships" or just "Black Water" for short
White Calamity aka "Bai Wuxiang" - Devastation, the most terrifying of the four. actually Bai Wuxiang is also a moniker and not a proper name, it literally translates to "White No Face". he's usually referred to as that or "White-Clothed Calamity"

There are a LOT of things which are hinted or mentioned from an early point but aren't revealed until much later in the story. TGCF is a long story(8 books) and the 1st season covers the entire 1st book and second season covers around 70% of the 2nd book.
I would really recommend reading the books, perhaps after you watch the season 2, because the books just have so much more detail and fun little info about the characters and the plot which can, more often than not, become important for future plot points.
We cant even say for sure if the donghua will be able to cover the whole story since tgcf is such a long story and it's BL(considering china's increasing censorship TGCF may never get the chance to be completed imo) so i'd really recommend you to read the books if you're enjoying the story
Some extra info for fun:
While the official english books are divided in 8 books for publication convenience, the original chinese version was divided into 5 books.
- The first book contained what the 1st and 2nd season of the donghua cover [book 1 and 70% book 2 of official eng release]
- The second book is a complete flashback arc which shows the story of xie lian's first ascension and how he first got banished. [End portion of book 2 and 50% book 3 in eng books]
- The third book picks up right where the 1st book left off. [rest of book 3 and book 4, 5 & 30% book 6 of eng books]
- The fourth book is again a flashback arc and continues the story of xie lian's past after his first banishment. [Remaining portion of book 6 in eng books]
- The fifth and final books picks up right where third book had left off. [Book 7 & 8 in eng book]
it seems like every step of the way to finishing this animation is leading me towards the books.... just in case, bookmarking this little book-guide lol

I must say, I much prefer (potentially maybe) HuaCheng’s voice in Mandarin. If you’ve listened to the Chinese dub, which version of his voice do you prefer? I just feel like the Chinese one sounds much younger and less “trying-too-hard-to-impress”. Like, the Chinese one is more on the cute side and the English one is more on the suave side. Not bashing on the English dub, it was still fantastic. It’s just a preference thing. But yes, how cool is the introduction to Hua Cheng, huh? Everyone’s shitting their pants, while Xie Lian’s off somewhere in his head, thinking about cute butterflies 😂

Agreed. The English VA is far too obvious for my preference. He’s a great guy who’s done wonders with getting the dub done, but unfortunately I still don’t like his Hua Cheng acting. The Mandarin VA is far more in keeping with the character of HC at this point.

Ваши теории чертовски хороши. Более того, даже ваши случайные шутки попали в цель, хотя в этом сезоне этого еще не раскроют. Но, когда станет ясен весь сюжет, вам будет так забавно пересматривать свои реакции.

You're completely right, that's exactly what they must look like omg... 😂😂 I'll make sure not to search up pictures of the disasters, if I print anything it's mostly screenshots from the episodes or pictures from reviews of episodes I've already watched. Now that I know this series is so long I feel like I've only just started grasping the plot lol there will be so much more happening... but I'm enjoying it so far. I want to understand as much as I can.
