Marine Corps Veteran Zin Watford: Crew Chief and Door Gunner in Vietnam

  • His helicopter pilot was gravely wounded and Zin saw they were heading straight at a cliff with only seconds to act--just one of the harrowing experiences in Vietnam Zin lived to tell . From his early childhood, Zin learned the tools and skills that eventually led him to being the crew chief of a helicopter in Vietnam. He carries the scars to this day. This is his story.

It tears my heart out to see our Vets not getting ALL of the support they deserve from the same gov. that sent them into harms way. Thank you men and women veterans for all you have done.

Semper Fi, welcome home, Zin!! HMM-262 Quang Ti 68-69. Thank you for sharing what many of us felt during, after, and present from our experiences in Vietnam. We fought for our country, and now we are faced with combating the VA and government politicians to help with PTSD, Agent Orange, etc. When I watch US presidents, sign trade agreements with Communist Vietnam, and declare how we are now allies I feel for the mothers, fathers, and loved ones who lost sons/daughters during a war our government never wanted to win.

Well done, I’m honored to hear Zin’s story. He is a real hero in my book. I’m a grandma and graduated high school in 1975, so I grew up seeing the Vietnam War on the news nightly. I tell you now that when it affected me the most was when my own boy joined the Marines after 911 and shipped to Iraq. That is when these stories of all these guys in Vietnam came flooding back to my memory, and the older I get, the more touched I am with what these guys went through. God Bless each and every one of them.

With my whole heart, I thank you for your service. You all deserved a way better homecoming than you received. Shame on anyone that treated you or any serviceman or woman with anything but respect, love and thanks. If they wanted to be mad at anyone it should've been our government not the veterans who were doing what they were asked for their country. May God bless you and all of the military men and women. Thank you! ❤

Thanks for telling about your experiences as best ya could~!
Coming from another USMC Helo Mechanic, Crew Chief, Plane Capt. & Aerial Gunner that came after you did.
Worked & flew on CH-46 Sea Knights, not the H-34 Choctaws of your time.
I commend ya for your doings, both when in service, & now for helping others~!.
A salute from one enlisted to another... Semper Fi, Marine~!

Precious, precious man. Yes, absolutely THANK YOU for your service. I was born in 1956, and I remember seeing the news of how crappy we treated our Veterans. We sent them into a hell hole and then beat them up when they came home, and they had to stuff all those nightmares. God Bless Him, I pray for a mighty move of God’s Hand to remove the night terrors and suffering and cover him with peace beyond all understanding. Amen!

Sorry, buts it’s all relative. How do you think the Vietnamese felt when the Americans went home? I wouldn’t complain too loudly about the Americans at home rioting against this war to those that have read the history of the Vietnam war and the lead up to it. Who’s despicable? No god I’ve read about sanctions killing of another human being except the christian god and the muslim god. The world needs to come up with a better high power if we’re all going to live in harmony. A minimalistic life is a good start where everyone has simple shelter and food at the end of the day.

@@Here_kitty_kitty1-wg9xd I'm old enough to have lost people in the Vietnam conflict was never declared a war. We shouldn't have been there or Iraq or Syria or Afghanistan etc etc. It was all done for the love of money. Christ is King.

My dad was a crew chief in the Marines, 71-75. I don’t know how many missions he flew on, but at least one was enough for him to receive a Purple Heart and the bronze star with a V device.
