Be very careful with the flat flex cables. Also be very gentle when wiping the laser lens with the q-tip and alcohol, do not push it down or sideways with force, if you do it will bend the very fine copper wires, thinner than an human hair; they keep the laser lens suspended to absorb vibrations. Don't lubricate the internal moving parts too much. If you put too much lubrication on that little spiral piece the little teeth that touch it will slip and start wearing out the plastic, ending up with the laser lens assembly not moving at all.
This probably sounds stupid, but your technique of brushing the dust into the vacuum nozzle was inspired!! That's my method from now on, so simple yet so effective!!
I have taken one of those apart myself. I bought one from a fleamarket, and it was pretty badly smashed. The case was cracked and had a gaping hole on top and there was a lot of broken plastic rattling inside of it. It took me a while to glue all the supports and other parts together (and filling the hole on the top cover) but I got it working in the end. The CD tray was fortunately intact, but it was "dislocated" like on your video when you disassembled it. I found out that the pin on the arm that controls the lift of the reader unit needs to go to the L-shaped channel on the underside of the tray. That thing still works to this day. Might go back and give it another, more thorough clean some day.

On the iconic nature of the PlayStation controller buttons, they weren’t just arbitrary. Circle and X are the Japanese equivalent of tick and cross, so the circle is Ok, and the cross is cancel. 3D was the goal from the start with the PlayStation, so the triangle button was intended to be used for camera operations, note that it looks like a view cone, kind of. The square was left as the general action button. Not only this, but the buttons are numbered. Circle is 1, one line to make it, X is 2, triangle is 3, and square is 4.

I still have the original ps2 controller that came with my system. I played so much that the spring or something broke in the L3 button or left analog stick. It still works but it's annoying that it won't spring back into place. So little me decided to open said controller to see if i could fix it. I was horrified when all that stuff fell out🤣. I also realized that analog sticks don't have a simple spring. I gave up and put everything back together successfully. I only lost one screw!😅 Thank you for this breakdown of the system. I have one just like this from my cousin that is in dire need of a deep clean. I just might film the cleaning process on mine 🤔. I'll be sure and give you credit for my newly acquired knowledge if I do make a video.
One of my favourite consoles. I was going to bed but seen this and had to watch. I have never seen a metallic blue PS2 but now I want to look it up when I wake up. Vice City and GTA 3 were two of my favourite games to play on it loved the retro styled intros. As GTA 3 was the first game I got to play on one and it was so cool. I have a PS2 with a HardDrive in it hooked up to a Sony Trinitron to play games from my past. This was really cool to see. Although I think my fan sounds a bit loud I may need to take a look at it. I loved the design as well and it was much easier to stack.
Loved the GTA games, too. I think Metal Jesus Rocks showed one of the blue ones in one of his videos. They seem to be quite rare, I have to investigate if mine still exists some place. :)
Jan, I'm wondering why you didn't clean the inner part of the Laser Lens? A little tough to get to but I'd bet you'd find a lot of dust in there based on the looks of the rest of the System...-Mark.
Cool Jan !! I got two of those sitting in a box myself which I once need to repair. I always liked the fat ones more. I still have a slim one rigged up permanently for some extensive Sing Star sessions when we have friends over :-D.
The fan noise depends upon which model of the fat ps2 you get. You may be remembering a much quieter ps2 than you have now, which looks to be an early model due to still having the link cable/firewire/ieee1394 port
The Ps2 is the one I had the most fun with. For some reason I like the Ps3 better. Yet I have more nostalgic attachments to Ps2. It must be because I was a teenager when playing the Ps2.
A nice unit. A worthwhile addition to the PS "Phat" units are the Network / HDD adapter that can then be used to play all your *Ahem* "homebrew games" on it easily. (cough FreeMcBoot cough) Don't buy the SATA versions found on EBay / AliExpress. They claim to have a network adapter but don't actually have it. If you want to use SATA drives, just buy a classic IDE one and get the Bitfunx update kit. It fits perfectly and works well.
I never use those Q-tips to put the grease on - because mostly they left some fluff and those tiny "hairs" are collecting dust again. Just clean with IPA and put some silicon grease or mechanical oil on both sides of the sleeve/guide rail with a toothstick or other "fluffless" thing and let the mechanic spread it on itself...
Not sure if I mis-saw something, but it looked like maybe the L and R shoulder buttons got reversed when re-assembling. Not that it makes any functional difference!
For the future: Never use a Q-tip to clean a laser lens! The surface of this is verry ruff, so u litterary scratch the lens. Use Isoprop and som clean micro fiber instead. Btw. a good repair video again. ;)
I have legitimately never seen the inside of a PS2 before so thank you for that for a start, bugger must get hot to have that much heat sink and the fan which is I think set to be full speed at all times or at least be constantly fast. I now actually also have a good guide to openin' an older model PS2 since my father's will need some help but also a controller teardown and cleanin' tutorial as well since I've never watched any but I really should clean my controller, both the Dpad and analog sticks actually click and stick ...probably my fault of liquid and dirt if I had to guess. So indeed for all that, Danke Schoen Jan!
I was wondering if it's possible to flip the fan to blow inwards and install a dust filter on the suction side but of course they had to use some weird nonsymmetrical proprietary fan :/
Great video, and damn didt the previous owner lived in a dust pile?? I am going to do a project with a PS2 phat systeem soon, FCBM, HDD with adapter and PS2 to HDMI dongle. You can have so much fun with these old systems these days :)
5:29 - Look up the Atari Falcon030/040 'microbox' case that didn't get a release. It's listed as a design influence on some of Sony's patent applications :)
Got a ps2 bundle really cheap locally, and after a clean it looks near mint! Even the controller still has a matte finish which most of the time is worn down. Also a little edit here, the controller contacts for ps2 controllers are slightly different compared to the ps1 contacts, as they are more of a dome shape on the bottom due to the ps2 controller having pressure sensitive buttons. Replacing them with ps1 contacts will prevent you from using that feature, but it wasn't used much anyways.
Yes, I noticed that after finishing the video, I ordered proper replacement parts but they haven't arrived yet. I'll most likely do another episode about the controllers sometime, I got two more broken ones to fix.
For every console that i restore i use to wash the case just as you did, but the top part is dirty very close to the model sticker and i would like to preserve it from getting water.. any tips?
this is the only console I didnt take apart of my 6th gen it has no thermal paste that is normally what gets me motivated to tear them down clean the board
So I just got one of these, my first time with a fat PS2, it's noisy and very dirty like yours, I really wanna open it up and clean it out soon, for some reason the bottom casing likes to stick a lot so I haven't fully taken it out, hopefully I don't break anything, the disc tray is noisy and I wanna make that more reliable, and it needs a new disc tray bezel, as well as a fan cover since the current one is a little cracked, it doesn't help that the heatsink in mine looks different
Nice restoration :) Few years ago bought myself a used PS2 Fat model like yours and the cooling fan is pretty loud in my console as well. Took the controller apart for cleaning too :D
Thanks! I heard that on some later fat PS2s, they used a slower running fan so it was a bit quieter. I think my original one had a quieter fan but I'm not too sure, it's been a while since I used that. :)
@@JanBeta totally different fan in the second FAT version, get the fan from a SCPH-500xx or a replacement with the same blade design and your fan noise brain damage problems will end. The SCPH-300xx which I guess you have is terrible as far as the fan goes and is twice as bad once you get a hard drive in them.
Yes, that's a problem I didn't take into account. It works (even the pressure sensitivity) but not completely smooth. I ordered the proper replacement part and am going to replace the stand-in as soon as it arrives.
@@JanBeta From what I understand only the original parts are manufactured such ways that are properly pressure sensitive, and replacements and knock-offs are working poorly or not at all. I'm curious if you kept the original parts (there must be a way to restore them) or if the replacements are working properly. Is true that very few games are actually using this feature, but it would still be a loss to miss this extraordinary feature. I remember jumping of my chair first I saw it working in Gran Turismo, I was like: Whoa! what sorcery is this?
Can you imagine how much cigarette and 'other' smoke was sucked through that poor thing over the years? :D The DVD drive was a potential mine field, but now it's all sparkling clean and ready for more action! Cheers
i remember bitd i used to open these up and many of them just needed their lasers cleaning or lubricant on the little rods it was held on.made some decent money doing that. also lost some because some of them where chipped and the lasers were burnt out :(.
I remember when I restored a C64 a few months ago. It didn't look as bad, but it made my hands itch just touching it. Thankfully it cleaned up nicely and I don't itch anymore. It still has some graphics glitches, but getting a vic 2 (might be the problem) could be difficult in current times. Getting a color SRAM shouldn't be hard. I'm thinking of doing the VIC squared mod since it's NTSC. A PAL Vic would tell me if the vic is the problem or not. I may actually order the mod even though I won't be able to get a PAL vic for a while.
is there any alternative way to fix those rubbers in the controller? i know, spare parts can be found from china, but the same rubber problem occurs in old quickshot phyton joysticks too, and unfortunately there isn't an option to buy them, as they are no more manifactured. I am thinking about 3d printing them with flexible filament, but i am not sure it will work well.
There is graphite lacquers that supposedly work for the conductive parts. I guess it could work if you get the 3d printed structure right. I have no experience with that stuff yet though.

I actually have it hooked up and going to clean It soon here, when my xbox one P.S.U comes back, grease the loading disk drive tray rod. I think it needs it. And clean the electronic laser eye. ..
I've done alot of those DVD drives and what I end up doing it taking it completely apart till their isn't anything on the drove I pull the laser put and all the cables and make sure their all cleaned and I wash all those plastics really well , I clean all the contacts and the rails and then put new silicone grease on all the parts it takes Patience to take it apart , all the consoles of the ps2 consoles are magnets for dust , the og Xbox is the same other than the clock capacitor issue thats all that happens on the og Xbox , bit I like doing a complete cleaning on the ps2 is nice and relaxing
It is just takes time but the problem you had where you should have taken the whole drive out and disassembled it completely I have taken it apart till it has nothing I take the cage out and the motors and the laser assembly and clean everything
GTA Vice City and GTA 3 are such a good games- I still remember most of the maps- yet I never made it through GTA V and I can't even remember what I didn't like about it or what it was about
Yes! The early 3D GTAs are brilliant. Love the games (although as I said I'm not very good at them). Recently got GTA V in the Epic Games giveaway thing, too, and I ended up playing Vice City on the PS2 mostly without even being interested much in the modern one.
Vice city on an XP or 7 PC with a decent graphics card is even better. You can do lots of mods to vehicles to make them look better and one of the radio station options when driving plays your own MP3 files, amoungst other things. And with a keyboard you have more controls.
I leaned a new term today "worm gear", Everyday is a school day ! Also i wonder if using parts from a PS1 controller will effect the pressure senitive nature of the d-pad & 4 right hand buttons on the the Dualshock 2 controller !

Some versions of the "fat" PS2 make more fan noise than others. I've seen at least 4 different versions. There are also 3 or 4 different versions of controllers, they look the same from the outside but are very different on the inside.
Great vid! I have one as well, got it for $20 at a goodwill donation store recently and cleaned it up, but this helps for the future, thank u. One thing I'm going to do to upgrade is get the SATA adapter and put games on a hdd, you should check it out.
I am also fond of the PS2 and it is the only console I have ever bought straight after launch, but it was definitely worth the money! The fan is really loud on mine, too, as with all of the early models as others have said. If you can find a way to replace it with a quieter fan, I would be very interested! I believe it's a 7V fan. I tried replacing mine with a 5V fan of the same size and ran a cable from the 5V at the USB connector... it was even louder than the original fan and always running at full speed, so that was no good. I know it would be possible to take a fan from a later edition fat PS2 and swap it over, but then I would need to find a spare console to act as a donor. I have a hard drive in my console too which seems to make the fan run faster as soon as the HD kicks in. I remember thinking that my PS2 would double up as a DVD player when I first bought it (remember how expensive DVD players were back then!) but the fan noise was too much when watching a film! The cheap chinese network adapter clones that take SATA drives have worked well for me. I have a HD full of games on the go. The clones do not have the network connector, but seriously, who needs that today?
Cut and strip the red wire for the original 12V fan and solder a 47 - 220 ohm resistor in series to drop the voltage. You'll have to experiment with the value to find the speed you want. 7V is probably best. Obviously you can undervolt a 12V fan but don't try to run a 5V fan on any more that 6.5V.

Its not an urgent problem ,......just thought I'd ask . Thanks to you i can clean mine , although it's not that bad .......Cheers
I'm new to PS2 repair myself but I heard that some of those have ageing/leaky capacitors (SMD parts mostly) on the main board. The problem you describe might be caused by that. I am eventually going to do a full recapping of mine.
You've inspired me to dig out my ps2 from the closet and give it a bath also :) Unfortunately, both my gamepads came up dead - probably the contacts on that elastic ribbon that buttons press against deteriorated with time (seeing as as I can get response when shorting correct pins). Good thing the Chinese are still making spare parts and knock-off controllers...

Nice! Yeah, the Playstation 2 was really kind of genius at the time. Still holds up pretty well today, in my opinion. :)
Great video! 👍 i would have replaced the thermal paste on some of the chips whilst in there.
The PS2 doesn't get very hot like newer consoles. Thats why they all still work. The PS1 doesn't even have any heatsinks on the chips.
Unfortunately the PS2 uses rather thick thermal pads, replacing them with paste would actually make things much worse.

Loved the GTA games, too. I think Metal Jesus Rocks showed one of the blue ones in one of his videos. They seem to be quite rare, I have to investigate if mine still exists some place. :)
Jan Beta Very cool, I'll look it up. Danke 😊
Every time Jan says "Careful" I imagine my 3 year old saying it just as she's about to do something really dangerous.
Jan, I'm wondering why you didn't clean the inner part of the Laser Lens? A little tough to get to but I'd bet you'd find a lot of dust in there based on the looks of the rest of the System...-Mark.
I own a ps2, it was my first ever console, I still have it and playing it now, the fans are quite loud that's how the ps2 fans sound
I managed to fix my PS2 a few years back. Still like playing Gran Turismo 4 and FF12 once in a while. If you haven't, you should try Free McBoot!
My PS2 needs a new laser.
@@EvilTurkeySlices forget the laser. install a harddrive and run free Mcboot play your games off the harddrive.
@@EvilTurkeySlices u can order a replacement laser on amazon
G f2f ffrdgg guy?mmm
Cool Jan !! I got two of those sitting in a box myself which I once need to repair. I always liked the fat ones more. I still have a slim one rigged up permanently for some extensive Sing Star sessions when we have friends over :-D.
Wow. A PS2 Solution to bring this console back to life! btw, great work for getting the console working!! ;-)
I never actually used a PS3 I think, just too modern for me I guess. I love the fact that they kept it backwards compatible though. :)
Great work and lots of things to learn about how to clean electronic devices. Thanks a lot!
Can you get quieter fans for the original consoles?
A nice unit. A worthwhile addition to the PS "Phat" units are the Network / HDD adapter that can then be used to play all your *Ahem* "homebrew games" on it easily. (cough FreeMcBoot cough)
Don't buy the SATA versions found on EBay / AliExpress. They claim to have a network adapter but don't actually have it. If you want to use SATA drives, just buy a classic IDE one and get the Bitfunx update kit. It fits perfectly and works well.
Yes, already have one of the IDE adapters here, coming up in a future episode. ;)
I miss my PS2. I had to sell all my consoles to pay rent a few years ago :(
Agustin Barto if you have a decent pc you can always run a ps2 emulator
Same boat man, it sucks. I miss my old xbox and 360 sometimes.
Ironically *now* they're selling for big bucks, so getting one again is out...
Good point! I used Q-tips a lot for applying the grease but that might not have been the brightest idea indeed.
Not sure if I mis-saw something, but it looked like maybe the L and R shoulder buttons got reversed when re-assembling. Not that it makes any functional difference!
Oh, that may be. I'll have to take another look at that.
I started restoring 2 of these yesterday! :)
Nice! Hope all goes well for you. :)
The PS2 doesn't get very hot like newer consoles. Newer ones such as the PS3 and XBOX360 have big copper heatsinks, 2 fans and _still_ get hot.
Oh, interesting. I'm going to look that up. Thanks for pointing that out. :)
@@JanBeta Sounds good!
Yeah shipping is wonky atm. Ordered a Game Boy Pocket from Japan and it took nearly 3 months to arrive
A console restauration. How p(l)easant to watch. :P
I... see what you did there... :D
I am really lucky that I was given a great condition fully functional one with all accessories and 2 controllers for free.
Should just put in a pillow case and on a 30 degree wash 🤪 great video 👌
Mine has an issue, when door opens, immediately close back and i cannot put the cd,any idea of the issue?Thank you in advance.
That's the PAL version. What about the NTSC/UC? is it the lense that make the console version different?
So I just got one of these, my first time with a fat PS2, it's noisy and very dirty like yours, I really wanna open it up and clean it out soon, for some reason the bottom casing likes to stick a lot so I haven't fully taken it out, hopefully I don't break anything, the disc tray is noisy and I wanna make that more reliable, and it needs a new disc tray bezel, as well as a fan cover since the current one is a little cracked, it doesn't help that the heatsink in mine looks different
Why is it important to remove the existing lubricant before relubricating?
Nice restoration :) Few years ago bought myself a used PS2 Fat model like yours and the cooling fan is pretty loud in my console as well. Took the controller apart for cleaning too :D
Thanks! I heard that on some later fat PS2s, they used a slower running fan so it was a bit quieter. I think my original one had a quieter fan but I'm not too sure, it's been a while since I used that. :)
@@JanBeta mine is SCPH-30004 version.
Jan Beta the later ones actually controlled the speed of the fan, so it ran a lot slower.
The warranty sticker tripped me up too!
Isn't the original rubber domed at the pressure points for some kind of analog function, pressing harder will reduce resistance?
Cheers
What tools ? what is the price of the tool ?
How about cap replacement?
The OG "phat" consoles made a lot of commotion even as new. :)
Yes, it's still pretty loud but it got a lot better after cleaning. :)
The later 'phat' 5000x series was much quieter.
I have a slim model and it won't load any disks, pretty sure the lens is broken
i remember bitd i used to open these up and many of them just needed their lasers cleaning or lubricant on the little rods it was held on.made some decent money doing that. also lost some because some of them where chipped and the lasers were burnt out :(.
Jan good refurbish. can you do some video's on mods to it?
Why not ground a vacuum cleaner or air compressor nozzle?
My warranty sticky is still on.. May 2021. Bought mine when it was new. I've bern told that was 20 yrs ago. Holy crap.I was in my 20s back then.
Oh, that sounds like a tedious job. Probably worth it though if you want to really get the dirt out of all the mechanical parts.
The dpad parts also came out once I was cleaning a mega drive dpad... that sucks ...
Does the controller work if its missing one of the little silver thing
Careful using alcohol on the laser lens or other parts that may potentially be acrylic. It can cause the acrylic to cloud up or even begin to crack.
Good point! I did this about a thousand times and never ran into issues. Probably a good idea to not leave the alcohol on the lens for too long.
Ok, maybe they're glass lenses, I don't know.
The isopropyl alcohol evaporates pretty quickly.
Nicely done!
Good guy Sony with the double shot buttons! Nintendo just had the letters embedded into the surface, or printed next to them.
What on/off switch do I need for a 30009R model
Thanks for Another Great Video!!👍✌
First PS2 wasn't thermo regulated. The first one to be were these without the Firewire port. There are much more quieter than the earliest models
Yes...the 5000x series... no firewire port, and a new IR port installed between the power and eject buttons. Much more quiet.
I leaned a new term today "worm gear", Everyday is a school day ! Also i wonder if using parts from a PS1 controller will effect the pressure senitive nature of the d-pad & 4 right hand buttons on the the Dualshock 2 controller !
Yeah I'd be concerned about that too. I don't know if I'd consider the parts interchangeable.
If your pal region the fan is really loud but if you are in u.s. region its quite.
Are custom video chapters a new thing on youtube or am i only noticing it now?
It's relatively new, only live for a couple of weeks as far as I know. I try to implement it in all new videos, really useful for longer ones. :)
Proves you don't need the most powerful console of that generation to be a great machine :)
Haha, yes!
Some versions of the "fat" PS2 make more fan noise than others. I've seen at least 4 different versions. There are also 3 or 4 different versions of controllers, they look the same from the outside but are very different on the inside.
What model is this
Well done.
Thanks Roger! :)
Great vid! I have one as well, got it for $20 at a goodwill donation store recently and cleaned it up, but this helps for the future, thank u. One thing I'm going to do to upgrade is get the SATA adapter and put games on a hdd, you should check it out.
Yes, I'm going to do the same, already have an IDE/network adapter here. Coming up in a future episode. :)
14:04 really don't use a vacuum cleaner.. ...?...dam
I think there's a battery in there to replace as well, I think it's a lithium coin cell.
The ps2 fan is pretty loud from factory
G'day Jan , I to have a Playstation 2 lol I'm 72 and was enjoying it ,...up until about 2 years ago , When I first got my 42" TV it worked ok on ATV ......worked for a couple of months , now its like the TV can't find it ......lol It would be pretty good if I could play it again . especially when we're in lockdown . lol Any ideas ? Its not an urgent problem ,......just thought I'd ask .
Thanks to you i can clean mine , although it's not that bad .......Cheers
I'm new to PS2 repair myself but I heard that some of those have ageing/leaky capacitors (SMD parts mostly) on the main board. The problem you describe might be caused by that. I am eventually going to do a full recapping of mine.
@@JanBeta Thanks Jan , I'll be watching for that.
