It's really insane how the sonic series will have you putting games you like incredibly low on a quality scale when you look at them objectively, approaching this with two tier lists was the best decision
The unleashed placements made me laugh really hard but I can understand it Wouldn't go that far but sometimes I forget how rough some sonic games would be blind or without extra stuff helping you out I'm fine with the werehog but sun/moon medals always fuck me up whenever playing vanilla so I end up using the mod to remove the requirement Hell even for something like advance 3 whenever I do the story mode I just play with a cheat that has all the characters unlocked at the start since that's more fun for me lol
@@BakuganRey Yeah, unfortunately Sega has a fascination with self-sabotage and shooting themselves in the foot for no reason. It’s really weird to see a company deliberately make the wrong decisions when they know it’s the bad choice.
So many Sonic games, especially the 3D ones, have a certain fraction of the gameplay that you really love and will gladly replay over and over again... then there's the other 70% of the game. It's like distinguishing the game at its peak vs. the actual complete package.
Pariah's overall opinion: 2:48 Sonic 1 4:24 Sonic 2 5:00 Sonic CD 7:22 Sonic 3 and Knuckels 9:11 Sonic Adventure 12:28 Sonic Adventure 2 19:24 Sonic Advance 21:35 Sonic Advance 2 23:27 Sonic Heroes 28:46 Sonic Advance 3 32:44 Shadow the Hedgehog 37:54 Sonic Rush 41:51 Sonic 06 44:16 Sonic and the Secret Rings 46:02 Sonic Rush Adventure 48:30 Sonic Unleashed 53:34 Sonic Unleashed Wii 59:46 Sonic and the Black Knight 1:03:37 Sonic 4 Episode I 1:05:01 Sonic Colors 1:10:34 Sonic Colors DS 1:12:20 Sonic Generations 1:15:03 Sonic Generations 3DS 1:15:49 Sonic 4 Episode II 1:17:12 Sonic Lost World 1:20:07 Sonic Lost World 3DS 1:21:28 Sonic Mania 1:23:36 Sonic Forces 1:26:59 Sonic Frontiers 1:30:44 Sonic Superstars
You could have a section at the end of future Sonic reviews where you newly add a game to the tier list. I think that would be interesting and entice people to check out past reviews.
@@Karianysuthe thing is what it’s trying to do differently is still bad. The levels suck to explore and time traveling is really hard without a level map
@@Karianysu And that's essentially the whole problem. Sonic CD is trying to be something different while looking very similar to Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 and it completely fails on all fronts. It's level design is complete non-sense and it doesn't even try to incentivize you to explore beyond finding an alternate method of getting the good ending and destroying the Metal Sonic projectors, which are basically just a meaningless collectible with no reward beyond what could be described as the appearance of a decorative element in the level.
So we're finally at the point of finishing this with a tier list with your overall opinion of every mainline Sonic game, huh? I've been watching your Sonic videos (And then every single video) ever since the now deleted "Playing for score" videos, a natural conclusion, this was a great watch, I'd definitely say I disagree a lot, but you have some really interesting and valid points for almost every game, you really make me think sometimes, either by showing a game I love isn't that good, or a game I hate isn't that bad (Which is something you did a lot to even non-sonic games, I gave a second chance to Super Mario Bros 2, for example, and also U Deluxe), or just by making me look at a game in a different way, you're ALWAYS bringing something new to pretty much every single game that I had already played a hundred times. No matter the game, I really always love seeing what your perspective on it is, feels like we're closing a book on this one, the ONLY thing in this tier list that I would actually dispute, as in, I cannot see what you mean beyond just "I disagree", in the sense that it definitely doesn't feel like we're talking about the same game, is Sonic Colors, as I personally find that to be genuinely one of the worst experiences I had with any platformer, but that's the only exception, but either way, I'm really looking forward for your next videos, as I always do :)
Why don't you like Sonic Colors? I really like Sonic Colors, but I also had your same mindset, I just saw a bunch of people saying Sonic Colors was terrible, or even worse than Sonic Forces, and I always believed it, and after watching Pariah's other videos, I though he would hate it, but no. After watching that review I decide to come back to Sonic Colors with a new mindset, and I actually enjoyed it
@@bonnymel4506 In what ways is the game badly designed, the game is definitely not slow, It is pretty fast I you are good and take shortcuts, even autoscrollers can be sped up if you play well. Maybe you are just trying to follow exactly what the level design tells you to do, try to do your own thing isntead, maybe watch some of Pariah's gameplay to see how he plays and maybe you could try play that way.
@@Nickika it does definitely fit like something Pariah would absolutely despise, because so much of what I hear him hating on many video games is present in Sonic Colors, many people even noticed that, making him aware of this (And he did not like that lmao) I did give Colors A LOT of chances, people sing so many high praises of it, but it always feels like we're playing a different game, and it got me thinking too, because, I was always so easy to please, I enjoy 06 and Forces, and I can even have fun with Lost World, so Colors was an outlier, I've never played such a frustratingly boring platformer in my life, a lot of what people think of this game, ends up being the opposite to me
@@sauce987654321 i heavily disagree, the quality of the story itself sure, but i think the "adventure" in general is as important if not more important than the gameplay, there is a reason why SA2 had such an impact to sonic in general
@MilkEnjoyer2 If that's how you feel, then that's fine. Story is definitely something that can enhance a Sonic game. But I think at the end of the day, most people would rather have a Generations over a Black Knight. A great game with a terrible story over a great story with a terrible game.
@@spritvio639i mean sure, but my point isnt "a game with good story and bad gameplay is better than a game with good gameplay and bad story" what i mean is, if the game is already fun, the other aspects ends up being far more important than further polish and gameplay improvements is gens more polished than unleashed? yeah sure, but the story mode of unleashed make it WAY above than gens in my personal preference with that said, tbh watching an entire playthrough of 06 on youtube was a much more fun experience than playing gens imo lol
As a CD enjoyer i suggest playing it like a kinda multiphase time attack, like instead of forming an efficient path from point A(start) to point B(goal), you do it from point A(start) to point B(a past sign) to point C(time travel spot) to point D(the generator) to point E(goal). Finding the best signs and runways takes some thought and is pretty darn fun. sometimes there may not even be a runway, instead using the path between the sign and generator to time travel. Some people say CD is about exploration, but like you mentioned in the video, it's like finding a needle in a haystack. Exploring is not how you find CD's fun, multiphase time attack is (or at least for me it is) Definitely reccomend playing a version of CD with the original time travel times, the remake's longer time travel time breaks some paths.
Seeing Unleashed in E tier on the left and A tier on the right yeah no Unleashed is soo ying and yang, just like with the day and night stages being that too
Honestly, the shame about Sonic is that so many of the games would be improved with just some minor tweeks and fixes that would make them so much better. Reminds me of Megaman X3,X5, and X6 tbh. Like imagine if Sonic Heroes didnt force you to play the game 4 times to get the true ending, or SA2 allowed the radar to be active for all 3 emeralds, or Sonic Unleashed removed the medals for story progression. Heck, imagine the storybook games were just Boost games as they are literally on rails as is.
Nah, X6 is still quite horrendous even with the fixes. That game's not that much salvageable overall, especially in regards to story. X3 and X5 have far better potential and X3 has possibly the most amazing Mega Man X hack ever made in the form of Project Zero, that one is really fun to replay over and over again.
@@superplayerex2431I agree Even if they fixed the jank in X6 it still has horrible bosses, horrible level design/gimmicks, the dreadful nightmare system, horrible enemy design, etc
It’s so sad that you have to be like “people are gonna be mad about this” because it’s very annoying that people can’t just… agree to disagree I guess? Don’t get me wrong, I definitely have been guilty of doing that in the past, but nowadays and especially after watching all of your videos I’ve come to realize that personal preference is PERSONAL and it shouldn’t affect how others view the same things. Like and example for me was your opinions on Adventure 2. You obviously don’t enjoy that game as much, meanwhile I love that game to hell and back and it’s one of my personal favorite 3D Sonic games. And when I first watched it, I just could not see how you couldn’t like it. But I realized after watching the rest of the series, the only real difference in our opinions is that you prefer when you have much more freedom of expression in the Sonic stages and I don’t mind and actually quite like the more “QTE” style as you call it. And I realized something that small can cause a world of difference when it comes to opinions on these games. This is all to say, to all those who find this list offensive or bad or whatever and actively go out of your way to hate on it, don’t take it like it’s an attack on your opinions. Because the only one attacking anyone’s opinions here are the people who act like their personal preference is somehow better than everyone else’s.
I think the internet promotes a lot of parasocial esque relationships with media. Like if someone dislikes (x media) then it is like they insulted your best friend or mother.
the sonic community is mostly composed of kids and adults who has the same mind as a child, people that care more about being "right" than giving actual criticism and opinions with the minimum of nuance, thats why there is so much toxicity
Very excited to see what comes of this new era of Pariah vids. As much as I enjoy the Sonic opinion pieces, I've always gravitated more towards the videos where you talk about other games. The SF6 ranked matches vid was excellent, and I originally discovered your channel through your JSR and BRC vids. The extra variety in your brand of content should make for some great stuff
Haven’t watched the video yet but I’ve binged Pariah’s videos again lately and I find my taste in Sonic games is generally very similar to his (we both like Advance 3 and Heroes which are two of the more polarising Sonic games) so I’m excited to watch this
this was a fun series, easy entry point for newbies to check the full reviews and learn a lot about the history of the franchise. Can't wait for Shadow Generations
When Pariah Said his Tier List was going to be WEIRD, I knew he was gonna make 2 Tier Lists. Fun video! I also VERY MUCH appreciate that I Can watch These videos early without paying Money. I hate when youtubers do this kinda stuff. Thank you! Also, I’m one of the few people who actually kinda enjoy Secret Rings. It’s an awful game, for sure, but once you’ve gotten all the skills to make Sonic play and feel better and just play the main game, it’s kinda fun honestly. I’ll put it on a C tier when it comes to enjoyment, but I Can see why many hate This game because it is awful.
And finished with the video! I heavily agree with Gens and Mania's placement. People may say they're overrated and just nostalgia fests, but I can always have such a fun time when playing those two games (especially Mania; which I have no problem saying its one of my favorite games ever).
@@themissingbits6375 Amen, dude! It's amazing that the games after those two never had the same quality, but like Pariah said the quality of this series is all over the place.
I personally feel more disappointed with Sonic Mania because it was forcibly made into a nostalgia fest. It would've been no doubt the best Sonic game if Whitehead and his team were allowed to make all the levels new and unique instead of remaking old levels from the past games.
This video is a very fascinating take in ranking Sonic games based on tierlist, and I really enjoy hearing your reasoning behind the rankings. However, I disagree with the ranking of Sonic CD thanks to this amazing analysis of the game done by "Sparky's World" a week ago. I recommend anyone reading this who love long Sonic Analytical content to check it out. It may give you a new appreciation of the game.
Other than sonic CD and Sa1 being in D tier, I would put them in C tier if not higher, this is a pretty good list. Also you are objectively correct by putting sonic advance 3 in S tier in your personal injoyment tier list. That game is awesome.
I like your approach to having a Quality Tierlist and personal enjoyment tierlist. Idt I would watch this entire video, so I skipped to the end, but hey, it’s a much better way of representing your opinions.
Omg ive been wanting this for so long, i like that you made two, but im also curious on your rankings of the sonic stories. Also PLAY TEARS OF THE KINGDOM PLEASE!!!
These are both great tier lists. There are a few placements I'm afraid I have to disagree with like I would put SA2 in A tier and Frontiers in B. But overall, it's not bad.
I like how you can differenciate your views on games by separating your objective critiques with personal statements & feelings towards them. Since I haven't played Unleashed's 360/PS3 version, I was surprised to see it so low on the left tierlist and again when you praised it in the right. I admire that dedication that, while still a fan of the series, you can still acknowledge the flaws these games ultimately have against them. Of course, anyone can point out some kind of bias towards the classic games & representations of Sonic in Japan -which I can understand clearly by the way- yet those who chastise you over those opinions have different biases for other games or series. Personally I can admit I prefer the rush of the Boost formula -pun unintended- from titles like Unleashed & Generations, but I also love the momentum-based gameplay as well from the classic & adventure games. I feel like adapting Sonic to the west was a required sacrifice to make Sonic as successful as it turned out to be. Case in Point? I feel like this is the best outcome for a tierlist video. It's the first time i've seen this type of grading, so I hope I get to see more stuff like this!
Don't think I've ever agreed with a Sonic ranking more than this one. Based. (Haven't played the handheld games but, given I too enjoy time attacking well designed levels, it seems I probably should).
Pariah have you played Sonic 06 Legacy of Solaris, I highly recommend putting it on your spread sheet, it adds a ton of cut content back into the game and polishes up a lot of aspects. I had a ton of fun playing the game as I do enjoy a lot of what 06 has to offer. Stelmo also has a great guide on how to set it up👍
As far as the left side goes; I think the only placements on that list I straight up disagree with are how low Sonic Advance 2 is, and how high Sonic Rush Adventure is. Everything else...I get it! Makes sense!
How do you feel about the riders series? Edit: Solid tier list! The double rating gives a more critical idea of how they are judged and what makes them good
This was a smart Idea as I also have 2 diff tier lists of my critical analysis & personal feelins of these games lol. This is the ONLY series I do this wit, it's SO FUCKED😭😭😭😭😭😭 edit: do u have a personal playlist of songs cus I heard a couple I really liked in the background but don't recognize. If u C this thx for tellin me in advance
i havent watched the video yet but thank you pariah for sending this my way . i think the only S tier sonic game is sonic 3 + knuckles so let's see where we're at
I love how in a lot of cases, sa1 & sa2 have become the "guess how much I hate (x) game before we get to 06. but really every sonic fan will prop up every sonic game. I'm not crazy about mania. I like sonic 3d Blast, I think sonic 3d blast is a better time overall then sa2. sa1 on the other hand is better than sonic 2 but not better than 3&k. 3&k is almost my favorite sonic game but I can't really stand the aspec ratio because I'm a cave man who can't even handle the future. sonic unleashed always only feels like a win button when you make it, and sonic colors was just never fun for me. free riders has a community and they seem really nice, I don't understand the meta I wish them all luck. tell them I said hi everyone, and finally, sonic rush is on for its ost and black knight is just more wrist hurty than all the others. I don't think about secret rings. or forces. I'm surprised I remember shadow as well as I do. and 06 is fun as a glitch bug fest if you're not having fun actually trying to do skips in sa1. every sonic game is its own pokemon and a teir list of them is just about as useful as a smash brothers teir list, but there are more small characters than there are sonic games
This was a really cool way to do a tier list and i mostly agree with you tho i honesty think SA2 should be in the tier with 06 and secret rings fight me
@spritvio639 SA2 is honestly a major downgrade from SA1 for basically all the gameplay styles. The hallway design for the speed stages makes them feel less free for cool skips and stuff like the more open levels in SA1. Then ya got the treasure hunting levels wich suffer from the worse radar and giant maps funny enough. Then the mech gameplay is just slow and ear piercing tho ig that is the same as SA1 but at least there the levels were shorter and focused on a death timer ya had to keep up. Tho the thing that absolutely kills this game for me is needing to grab upgrades mid level it kills the flow of a fast pased level and makes the slower levels more of a slog. Tho this is all my opinion as someone who only recently played all the adventure style games
Hey pariah, would you say that this selection of sonic games is your “DEFINITIVE LIST OF MAINLINE SONIC GAMES” ? Or did you just throw the list together kind of hap hazardly?
I like you did 2 lists, as weird as that is on paper. Its like the left was closer to public perception + focused on the og releases whereas the right was your actual opinion. I mean both are your opinion I guess, but I dunno I like seeing the objective take VS subjective. It was neat
Great vid. This is unrelated would you consider putting your old Forces Overclocked review up on your Patreon or in an unlisted playlist or something? Because I did agree a lot with your points in that video and it'd be cool to rewatch it.
@@Voltricity435 He said that his judgement was clouded by being sick at the time so it wasn't accurate to his feelings about it. What remains of that video is a simple recommendation in the Forces review
Sonic Lost World plays very differently from most other Sonic games (especially since it's very much a Mario Galaxy knockoff, just like Pariah said in the video) and he said he does not like the gameplay in it at all due it also being very janky, so I'm not surprised he's not interested in doing time attack in that game.
Respect you alot as a youtuber and i have been binge watching your videos this whole month but that placement for colors DS is beyond questionable It objectively has better controls than the first 2 rush games due to the stomp and consistent homing attack, its level design outside of the wisp sections (which definetely dont make up a majority or anywhere near even half of the platforming in most stages. A simple playthrough or even watching a speedrun of the game easily debunks this) is pretty similar to the ones found in rush and rush A, and the wisp mechanic like you said was done far better in this game than in the wii version Also the game having no filler content is a huge plus as well, your placement for this game along with some other odd ones like shadow basically ended the video for me I highly suggest you go back to colors DS just one more time and look at the game more thoroughly
If he did ever rank the Riders games, on the left og Riders is def B tier Zero Gravity would be C tier And free riders would be E tier on the right og Riders on the A tier Zero Gravity would be between A or B tier Free riders would be a C tier game I feel
Yeah, but it still doesn't make sence. Overall package is the game itself, personal enjoyment is the game without the things pariah doesn't like + he can improve the game with improvements made by fans. There's literally no way that his personal enjoyment can be lower then the overall package, bc that would mean he lies to himself that it is worse then he thinks. Even if his personal enjoyment was literally no different to his overall experience, it would have been in D tier, cuz' his personal enjoyment would have been equal to his overall experience. At that point, it's literally self-deception. I know I'm repeating myself over and over, but it really doesn't make any sence to say: "This game is bad. But without the worst parts of the game, and with few improvements, this game is terrible!,, Like that's just a senceless hate.
The werehog levels do absolutely suck tbf so I honestly agree

@@Good_Ebening_ i heavily disagree. Maybe with the platforming yes but the combat, no. I think the combat is the best Sonic Team has done combat in the entire franchise. Nothing comes close.
You're sure about that? The Werehog combat in Sonic Unleashed is really simple and mind-numbing. It certainly has more variety than Sonic Frontiers' combat, but that's a fairly low bar to cross.
3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1
@@superplayerex2431 the combat system of Unleashed is more than just ‘simple’. Yes u make a good point on the versatility of moves but when u actually engage and take the time to master the combat with what the game throws at you, it can be fun. Especially since playing well with the werehog is actually rewarding. Do you know how hard it is to get an S rank in a werehog stage?
I don't really care how hard it is to get an S rank in a Werehog level because I do not enjoy that part of the game. It completely detracts from the main game-play (the day-time stages that are actually really good) and feels like a very lesser version of good action games. Every time I see a Werehog stage, I either want to go back to play the day-time stages or exit out of Sonic Unleashed to replay Devil May Cry again, because that is a very fun action game with way better controls, way more fun moves and far better enemy variety/AI.
I don't know if you do this just for the lolz but you constantly mock the opinions of those you disagree with for no reason. This weird behavior really doesn't make you any better than any of the Sonic fans you dislike. Anyways, as for the rankings themselves, I don't know why you would use mods that add more stuff to the games since you're counting only the original releases in one of the charts. Especially in the case of Project 06 which changes a lot about the original game. Doesn't make much sense to me. And yeah I also disagree with a lot of the things here but whatever.
You play at least as much Werehog percentuage in Unleashed Wii than Unleashed HD, Unleashed Wii has, for no reason, 3 to 4 main act for every stage and they each last more than the single day stage, day time only 1 main act and a few smaller missions. Also Werehog in Wii is much much worst, less control, basically no combat options, worst platforming, no speedrun mechanics ecc.
It is the weirdest way to do a tier list because it's a bad way to do a tier list imo, like, with everyone who claims to be "objective" when rating stuff, they will ALWAYS put things they really enjoy in the lower "quality" tiers, but it's basically never the other way around, nobody ever puts things they really don't like at the high tiers of "quality", there's still a lot of subjective bias. Like I genuinely do not think Gens 3DS, 4 Episode 2, Advance 2, or either version of Lost World are actually bad enough to go on the same tier as 06 and Secret rings. The one on the right is the only one I'd take seriously from anyone
FINALLY someone putting unleashed in its place. I don’t know what people are on talking about some Unleashed is peak. Talking bout some its better than Sonic X Shadow Gens. Talking bout some best Sonic Game bs. Easiest way to make yourself look like a 🤡 in 3 easy steps. Erm, well the werehog is actually good 🤓. STFU What’s next someone’s gonna say Medal Collecting is fun? Like unless you’re talking about enjoyment of the game Unleashed is still pretty bad.
Edit: Yep, making comments while being sick is not a good idea. Also, since it seems is not obvious when I specifically say it at the last part, i'm not saying my opinions are better, what I'm saying is that I, personally, DO NOT FIND these takes to be good. Like, at all. Except for specific cases like Sonic Rush, Mania and Gens. Please, PLEASE, never ever cook again (at least my subjective opinion of your subjective opinions is that). You literally said "I think Sonic Forces is a better designed game than Adventure 1", come on man, one thing is having a hot take, but this is just awful on so many levels (you literally prefer a game where a lot of the levels can be beat by just holding the boost button, how is that "better designed"???)... You find Wisps more intrusive in Colors DS, while they are literally mandatory to even get close to an S rank in the Wii versión, wtf. Not to mention how painfully slow most wisps in the Wii version are, especially compared to Colors DS. You hate Unleashed specially for the Werehog poorly implemented level design yet you praise Sonic Colors which, I must say, has even worse level design due to what I mentioned before. And don't even get me started on your "personal enjoyment", which relies on... Mods? WHAT? You find enjoyment in P-06, NOT Sonic 06 itself, how does a mod even matter here if they are completely separated experiences? Even if it's a "personal enjoyment" opinion, your opinion is still about a completely different experience. If I wasn't sick right now I would literally go game by game because almost every single one of your opinions is so bad, and they even contradict among themselves... Yet again, this is a personal tier list, so it's not like I can "deny your opinions", but for me at least it is a specially infuriating list with a lot of problems.
It literally is just his opinions. You have the right to disagree, but to just outright say "nah, you're completely wrong because XYZ" is ridiculous. You're just rejecting his subjective opinions so you could ultimately push your own subjective opinions as "more correct". You'd be hypocritically contradicting yourself like no tomorrow. Also, his "personal enjoyment" being reliant on mods... is just that. It's his personal enjoyment metric based on completely subjective factors. That list is meant to be based on a completely different experience. The fact that you're mad because he's openly rating the games with mods in a separate tier-list from the main one is just really silly. This whole comment you wrote is the embodiment of the Sonic fan-base as a whole, down to the "no, my perception of the games is less of a hot take!" argumentation. The behavior you exhibit is the reason nobody takes Sonic fans seriously.
@@superplayerex2431 ...No? Did you even read? I clarified, specifically and literally right at the end of my comment, that I can't truly deny his subjective views (for, well, obvious reasons) even if they get me infuriated. What are you on? And again, the reason I find his arguments bad is because: 1- His criteria to judge the games seemingly contradicts itself, from my point of view at least. Surely I didn't get too deep into why I think that, but that wasn't the point. I was expressing my anger at the video, not really explaining it (which is why I my comment is a bit too much on the exaggerated side). 2- If he accounts for mods in his personal enjoyment of a game... That means nothing. At the very instant he brings up mods, what he finds more enjoyable are the mods themselves, not the game. It's like saying I enjoy Sonic Forces but only if I take into consideration Overclooked, which is stupid at best, that's why I got so mad at it even with the "personal enjoyment" thing. It just doesn't make sense to treat mods as part of the game when they're, precisely, modifications that make for a completely different experience. I also find it ironic how you try to out me for being this sort of hypocrite that only wants to push his own views when you yourself push not only your, albeit understandable, biases towards my negative comment, but also your way too generalised views of the fandom as a whole to make a point against me, especially when you misunderstood a thing I specifically clarified. Sure, I do admit, once again, that I was sick and wasn't thinking that much of the comment and just made it without thinking about it's contents, I was just venting my frustations with it. Besides, one thing about that first thing you say... A view being subjective does not mean it's automatically correct or acceptable, and that was what infuriated me: I found his views incredibly poorly argumented to even be taken seriously, even if it is a purely subjective opinion. Then again, my comment was definitely not the best, but from that to saying that I represent the reasons as to why the Sonic fandom is not taken seriously... I'd say you got even more mad than me with that over the top comment, even if you're not being as, uh, "passionate" with the words as I was.
@@InkkuStudio Your entire reply crumbles because you didn't even read what I said. The whole "personal enjoyment" thing does not matter at all, you're reading way too much into it. And like you already said yourself, your thoughts about his criteria for judging the games is just as subjective as the whole video. It's the way you worded your comment to sound as mad as possible that makes it seem like you're taking this whole thing way too close to heart and it just sounds very silly. As for that last bit... No, I'm not at all mad or anything like that. It's simply a fact that you are exhibiting that exact behavior Sonic fans in general are really hated for. Saying you got mad for a subjective tier-list video because the person in question deviated from your own line of thinking is just... Yeah, it's just peak Sonic fan behavior. I've never seen that in any other fan-base before. It is what it is and I'm not trying to sugarcoat it.
in my opinion gens and mania doesn't belong anywhere near the best sonic games, they are such a "nothing" game to me, yeah they are fun (although i don't think mania is fun at all LMAO) and are the games with less flaws, but to me having less flaws doesn't make them a better game, frontiers that is a game some people reaaaally love to shit on made me feel things that gens didn't come even close to make me feel, and thats much more meaningful for me than "polish" and if im being honest, if i want to purely have fun i can just play anything silly and i probably would have more fun than playing those two games
When you Time Attack these games, what are you usually shooting for? For me, I like it when the game has listed times, time based ranking, and/or leaderboards that make it a lot more fun to me. When games just record your time and don’t “reward” you for it, it feels really empty in comparison if there’s no goal to go for other than beating your own time.
I just do it for the fun. I don't actually care about the times themselves. Though leaderboards are a great motivational factor to get me to push harder than I would otherwise.
@@Pariah6950Yeah, leaderboards are a huge deal for me. It’s one of the reasons I like Origins, so much. It also makes Sonic Forces a lot more fun, for me. Especially when trying to reach top 100 for best time, which sometimes can take a very long time.
@@Hyp3rSonicNeat. Idk how you have 2 spots in the same level and platform lol. I have a few top 100 spots. 4 or 5 of them in Forces, 1 in Sonic 4 part 2, a few in Origins across Sonic 1 and 2. I still have a lot of leaderboards to leave my mark in lol.
@@sauce987654321 I used more than 1 account. I thought that would had been kinda obvious 😂 I did the same for Mania, Origins, Generations and Sonic 4 Ep. 1. I'm fine with the werehog but sun/moon medals always fuck me up whenever playing vanilla so I end up using the mod to remove the requirement
Hell even for something like advance 3 whenever I do the story mode I just play with a cheat that has all the characters unlocked at the start since that's more fun for me lol
The fact that Sonic needs two separate tier lists just speaks for itself how much padding and fat needs to be trimmed out of most of these games.

6:03 It sounded like you were about to cry when you mentioned CD's level design lmao
I would as well
That game is a decent platformer but a horrible sonic game

Listening to this in the background while playing through Mario 1 and Lost Levels back to back warpless. Should be fun.
After watching that review I decide to come back to Sonic Colors with a new mindset, and I actually enjoyed it
@@Nickika In short: it's because I find it to be a very poorly designed video game despite the music and visuals being amazing
@@Nickika it does definitely fit like something Pariah would absolutely despise, because so much of what I hear him hating on many video games is present in Sonic Colors, many people even noticed that, making him aware of this (And he did not like that lmao)
I did give Colors A LOT of chances, people sing so many high praises of it, but it always feels like we're playing a different game, and it got me thinking too, because, I was always so easy to please, I enjoy 06 and Forces, and I can even have fun with Lost World, so Colors was an outlier, I've never played such a frustratingly boring platformer in my life, a lot of what people think of this game, ends up being the opposite to me
@@bonnymel4506 what stuff that he hates is also in Sonic colors?
> Doesn't weigh story heavily in Sonic games

Because gameplay is way, way more important than story in these games.
@@spritvio639i mean sure, but my point isnt "a game with good story and bad gameplay is better than a game with good gameplay and bad story" what i mean is, if the game is already fun, the other aspects ends up being far more important than further polish and gameplay improvements
is gens more polished than unleashed? yeah sure, but the story mode of unleashed make it WAY above than gens in my personal preference
with that said, tbh watching an entire playthrough of 06 on youtube was a much more fun experience than playing gens imo lol
@@spritvio639 agree
As a CD enjoyer i suggest playing it like a kinda multiphase time attack, like instead of forming an efficient path from point A(start) to point B(goal), you do it from point A(start) to point B(a past sign) to point C(time travel spot) to point D(the generator) to point E(goal).
Finding the best signs and runways takes some thought and is pretty darn fun. sometimes there may not even be a runway, instead using the path between the sign and generator to time travel.
Some people say CD is about exploration, but like you mentioned in the video, it's like finding a needle in a haystack. Exploring is not how you find CD's fun, multiphase time attack is (or at least for me it is)
Definitely reccomend playing a version of CD with the original time travel times, the remake's longer time travel time breaks some paths.

@@superplayerex2431I agree
Even if they fixed the jank in X6 it still has horrible bosses, horrible level design/gimmicks, the dreadful nightmare system, horrible enemy design, etc

This reasonable, well-rounded view Pariah gives on games is why I enjoy this channel so much tbh.
Too bad no one will listen to your last paragraph
I think the internet promotes a lot of parasocial esque relationships with media. Like if someone dislikes (x media) then it is like they insulted your best friend or mother.
we should get mad at people's opinions and take everything seriously, this sonic sheit is serious after all
When someone's whole personality is centred around being a Sonic fan I'm not surprised they get so easily offended
the sonic community is mostly composed of kids and adults who has the same mind as a child, people that care more about being "right" than giving actual criticism and opinions with the minimum of nuance, thats why there is so much toxicity
As Eggman says oohh I've been waiting a long time for this
Very excited to see what comes of this new era of Pariah vids. As much as I enjoy the Sonic opinion pieces, I've always gravitated more towards the videos where you talk about other games. The SF6 ranked matches vid was excellent, and I originally discovered your channel through your JSR and BRC vids. The extra variety in your brand of content should make for some great stuff
Time for a Sonic Story Tier List
Next should be: Ranking every Rankings in Sonic games
Haven’t watched the video yet but I’ve binged Pariah’s videos again lately and I find my taste in Sonic games is generally very similar to his (we both like Advance 3 and Heroes which are two of the more polarising Sonic games) so I’m excited to watch this
Pariah, thank you for introducing me to 115, been listening to it nonstop since yesterday.
this was a fun series, easy entry point for newbies to check the full reviews and learn a lot about the history of the franchise.
Gens & Mania is defeintly one o’ the best Sonic games and my favirotes. Why couldn’t THIS be the standard quality of the Sonic games?!
@@themissingbits6375 Amen, dude! It's amazing that the games after those two never had the same quality, but like Pariah said the quality of this series is all over the place.
Yup… but hey, we’ve Got many many many years of Sonic the Hedgehog in the future, so maybe that Can change. Maybe. Maybe not. Who knows.
Yeah, those people are in the minority for a reason.
I personally feel more disappointed with Sonic Mania because it was forcibly made into a nostalgia fest. It would've been no doubt the best Sonic game if Whitehead and his team were allowed to make all the levels new and unique instead of remaking old levels from the past games.
I did not expect this so soon that’s awesome
Well, that ranking was pretty entertaining. Loved the Pariah's noises.
I respect your opinion that the boost titles are more competently designed. Ive always preferred that style for 3d
As someone who consistently thinks about ranking Sonic games objectively and subjectively, I feel so validated by this video. Mad props Pariah.
These are both great tier lists. There are a few placements I'm afraid I have to disagree with like I would put SA2 in A tier and Frontiers in B. But overall, it's not bad.
Do this but for the stories of the games
1 side for the English version
1 side for the Japanese version
This is missing the goat sonic spinball.

@@themissingbits6375 I was being ironic, I also believe he will not, but hey! I for sure wouldn't mind
Yeah.
We need to make a tierlist tierlist
45:45 Have you played any of Project Reignition? Feel like that should be a point of discussion if we're factoring in things like P-06.

Sonic 4's so lame it was the only one that ranked down lmao
This was a really cool way to do a tier list and i mostly agree with you tho i honesty think SA2 should be in the tier with 06 and secret rings fight me
Why do you feel that way?

Have you played Lost World's time attack? Pretty difficult to S rank particularly the snowball level... might change your mind about the game.
@@superplayerex2431 Just a suggestion. I found the most enjoyment out of the game doing it over playing casually.
Respect you alot as a youtuber and i have been binge watching your videos this whole month but that placement for colors DS is beyond questionable
It objectively has better controls than the first 2 rush games due to the stomp and consistent homing attack, its level design outside of the wisp sections (which definetely dont make up a majority or anywhere near even half of the platforming in most stages. A simple playthrough or even watching a speedrun of the game easily debunks this) is pretty similar to the ones found in rush and rush A, and the wisp mechanic like you said was done far better in this game than in the wii version
Also the game having no filler content is a huge plus as well, your placement for this game along with some other odd ones like shadow basically ended the video for me
I highly suggest you go back to colors DS just one more time and look at the game more thoroughly
I'd rate Frontiers a B(reath of the Wild) minus.

There's literally no way that his personal enjoyment can be lower then the overall package, bc that would mean he lies to himself that it is worse then he thinks.
Even if his personal enjoyment was literally no different to his overall experience, it would have been in D tier,
cuz' his personal enjoyment would have been equal to his overall experience.
At that point, it's literally self-deception.
I know I'm repeating myself over and over, but it really doesn't make any sence to say:

The werehog levels do absolutely suck tbf so I honestly agree
@@Good_Ebening_ i heavily disagree. Maybe with the platforming yes but the combat, no. I think the combat is the best Sonic Team has done combat in the entire franchise. Nothing comes close.
You're sure about that? The Werehog combat in Sonic Unleashed is really simple and mind-numbing. It certainly has more variety than Sonic Frontiers' combat, but that's a fairly low bar to cross.

You see though, you cant rank these games because youve only played 25% of sonic 3

I explicitly said that the left list is not objective. Just an evaluation of the entire game, rather than just the parts of it I actually care about.

STFU
What’s next someone’s gonna say Medal Collecting is fun?
Like unless you’re talking about enjoyment of the game Unleashed is still pretty bad.
You're more annoying than the people you're making fun of dipshit
Geez man, to go every game and critique him point by point is a little extreme.
@@spritvio639 Yeah, writing comments while being sick is not a good idea lmao.
And again, the reason I find his arguments bad is because:
1- His criteria to judge the games seemingly contradicts itself, from my point of view at least.
It is what it is and I'm not trying to sugarcoat it.
what a bad video.
Wdym with bad video?
in my opinion gens and mania doesn't belong anywhere near the best sonic games, they are such a "nothing" game to me, yeah they are fun (although i don't think mania is fun at all LMAO) and are the games with less flaws, but to me having less flaws doesn't make them a better game, frontiers that is a game some people reaaaally love to shit on made me feel things that gens didn't come even close to make me feel, and thats much more meaningful for me than "polish"
and if im being honest, if i want to purely have fun i can just play anything silly and i probably would have more fun than playing those two games
If you don’t like Mania and Gens, then you basically just don’t like Sonic gameplay 😆
So Frontiers is better because it's worse?
so you dont like sonic for being sonic? what?
No.

@@sauce987654321 I'm both rank 9 and 16 on iron Fortress on Xbox from Sonic Forces
I thought that would had been kinda obvious 😂
I did the same for Mania, Origins, Generations and Sonic 4 Ep. 1. That doesn't mean that I reached the top 100 for every level(for both accounts)
Also, that doesn't mean that I did for characters like Tails and Knuckles(like on Mania).
However, I did play on all the levels from Time Attack as all of the characters. I only done that on 1 account.
I have Sonic 4 Ep. 2 on mobile(well, it used to be downloaded)
Anyways, I did enjoy speedrunning the levels again
