Both are good paints, but the schmincke rewet more easily. WN always take more scrubbing to get the same amount of intense colour. Both your paintings are wonderful!

I work with Schmincke Horadam and W&N professional line and i find both equally very good in quality! 👏

I actually recently got my first "real" set of watercolours, and was choosing between these two. So happy I went with the Schmincke; this just confirmed I made the right decision! :)

Schminche are so intense and have incomparable earth tone. However, there is a brightness to Windsor Newtons that I really like also. So I’m using both together. Why not ?

I loved your butterflies and I personally liked the Schmincke one better. I am a big fan of Daniel Smith Watercolors but I think it’s good to use othe brands for different colours. 😍

🦋🦋 Hiii Maureen! I've never tried Daniel Smith watercolours - I'll have to find some to try out at some point! Thank you for your lovely comment 💖 Xx

Thankyou so much for this comparison. I really needed to see this. I am really up for trying Schmincke and also St Petersburg White nights. I am all about the pigment .

Now that W+N is foreign owned, its Artist watercolours are made in France and Cotman paints in China, they are no longer the same company they once were. They have not kept up with their competition. But, by slipping down market, perhaps they will become more affordable?
I haven't tried Schminke or Sennelier or Old Holland or Holbein Rembrandt series but I really like Daniel Smith tube paints and use it to refill old W+N pans; much cheaper if you buy in or near Seattle, USA too ;) Daler Rowney Artists grade paints can be very good value, I really like this historic English brand that is often overlooked.
For student grade paints, I liked Cotman and Holbein Van Gogh well enough but wonder if Cotman is deteriorating, for example the Ultramarine and Cobalt blue seem more alike now than in the past, like different strengths of the same colour - and both seem weaker than they used to be. Blues are really important to me, so that is quite worrying - with its many blues, perhaps Schminke is the way forward ;). The Cotman Pthalo blue is very good though and could perhaps replace the now insipid Cobalt Blue, which used to be my favourite/ most used Cotman colour.

Thank you for this well-thought out and super interesting comment! I wasn't aware of a lot of those things. I'd really love to try out the Daniel Smith watercolours at some point - I keep hearing good things about them, & I'll try to make more comparison videos in the future.
Thank you for taking the time to write this, it's been insightful for me and no doubt will be to others also.

Thanks for the video! I you were to recommend one set of 24/36 (I’ve found both brands online in the same price) - would it be Rembrandt or Schmincke? 😊

Where did you get that super tiny brush you used for detail on the butterfly?

Hiii, I've just seen this comment - so sorry it's a late reply, I can't remember where I got it, possibly 'Cass Art' or 'ArtDiscount', it's a Winsor & Newton cotman brush. 🌻✨

Windsor and Newton cause Schmincke cannot beat that transparency!! But I love both brands for different uses Windsor and Newton are the best for botanical art and landscapes! And Schmincke for portraits and urban sketching!

Heyy Kyomii, I definitely prefer how the Winsor & Newton watercolour butterfly looks... I don't know if it was because of technique or not though? Either way - You're right! They are both really good paint sets. I love them both 😍 💖 🦋 Xx

  • @marlon7156

I prefer the one produced more pigment because it allows for more control to remove, and get more coverage in less strokes. Quality is always better versus quantity. If art is your passion, it's worth investing in high quality products and best brushes. Cheap material and paints will just cause more of a headache to get same effect that might take you two strokes worth good quality paints. Hope this makes sense. I bought an iPad mini 5 and apple pencil because no other stylus matches the apple pencil in realistic pencil work.
Lani, your still the prettiest girl artist I know on TH-cam 😍❤❤❤ Never seen a beautiful girl whose art skill matches her beautiful smile 😚🌹💕

      @chumnutzly 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Windsor and newton are NOT low quality. They just dont whave quite as much pigment as schminke. But they are WAY cheaper. So for someone whos not a professional painter, the W&N is probably better

Winsor & Newton paints have deteriorated? In which way? What’s different now? I have been using Horadam and now I have discovered WN Professional Watercolours. I like that they offer tubes of 37 ml and more transparent colours.
