Kiptopeke State Park, USS Wisconsin, VA Beach & More - Full Time RV Living: We have returned after nine years to a place we once called home. While we lived in the Norfolk & Virginia Beach area we never took the time to explore the area and see all it has to offer. Today we take you to a few spots that we should have taken the time to visit years ago. Along the way we manage to have a 'Farley Fail' moment.

It's so easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and forget to explore the local area. So many people think they have to quit their jobs and leave home to see cool sights, but they are often in your own back yard. Glad you saw them this visit!

Such a good point - so many of us get so tangled up in our everyday lives when living in our S&B's that we really don't check out our own neighborhoods. You may get to go 'see' something when you chaperone a child's field trip, or take them off to soccer, ball games, etc. but as far as actually adventuring, well...some day when we have the time.... Thanks for the highlights of great places to go in the VA Beach - Norfolk area and the trip down memory lane. "Farley Fail" - that's a good one. Hopefully you won't have too many of those!

WOW....what a memory you brought back for me. I was stationed at the CINCLANTFLT compound back in 1984 and had to go aboard the IOWA to gather a few pieces of equipment for the MARS station I was operating. As I passed across the brow and stepped foot on her fantail the feeling of a ghostly presence passed through me....it only took about 5 seconds. I'd NEVER felt anything like before, or since for that matter....but it did cause the hair on the back of my neck to stand up....just as it did as I was watching you set foot on the Wisconsin. As Bob Hope always said....."Thanks for the memory". v/r, TS

Shellback July 1971 aboard USS Juneau on the way to Auckland. I took my Dad to Pearl several years ago, and we toured Missouri. Though my Dad had been an aviator like me, he told me that during his 30 years in the Navy, he never saw any sailors more fiercely proud of their ship than battleship sailors. Incidentally, my father-in-law's ship, USS Taylor, was anchored right next to Missouri in Tokyo Bay when the surrender was signed. My father-in-law was invited to attend the ceremony, but he sent several of his sailors over instead, saying they'd done all the hard work and deserved to be there.

I had never seen so many MPS show up and surround the shell until the bomb squad was able to get there to remove it. Thanks for the memories.
I didn't realize how much we have in common. My father was also a mustang and his last duty station was at Little Creek as security chief for the base. He retired as a WO-2. His wife was a Wave but was only in for 3 years because they married. They met at Great Lakes where my Dad was an instructor. Unlike y'all, we never stayed in one place very long. I moved 48 times in 10 years, since my mother wanted to be as close as possible to where he was going to be stationed.

Having been born and raised on the Pacific coast I can only hope to visit the Atlantic coast as part of my bucket list. We had a cement ship in Aptos, California but it has succumbed to the storms and no longer shows much above the water. I remember being able to walk out to an area close to the end as a kid. Now it’s gone but I remember it very well. If you get out west, let us know. We’d love to hike Yosemite with you. Blessings

I have been stationed there in the Navy more than a few times myself. Also married a Navy lady while I was there and it lasted 20 years. I was already planning to take my new wife to Williamsburg, but now am thinking about staying a bit longer and showing her some of my old haunts. I do understand West Oceanview is not what it used to be though. Like you guys, I never visited any of those spots the whole time I was there. Though i did enjoy SeaShore State Park.

One minor point, Phil - I think you might have meant about 58,000 tons instead of 58 tons. I think one of those 16 inchers weighs about 100 tons all by itself. Great job guys....my husband was assigned on a aircraft carrier during the Vietnam War. For the life of me I can’t remember it’s name but it was huge. I remember him showing me the bunk areas and other parts of the ship and I cried. What sacrifices our military make to let us sleep peacefully at night.
