I've had one of these for over 40 years when I was a boat builder .... good to see them restored and hopefully put to good use.

OK, I’m a newbie to woodworking and have no even heard of a compass plane never mind seen one. It looks like something from a 1950s/60s science fiction series like Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers. A brilliant video, thank you.

Glad you enjoyed the video! And yeah this is a very cool versatile tool. It won't get used too often, but when I'll actually need it, it will come in really handy.

Very nice job bringing this great plane back to serviceable condition but using the lever cap to loosen or tighten the cap iron screw is somewhat amateur. Many lever caps are chipped for just this reason.

numbers 6-7-8 are smoothing planes not jointer planes. Good job, however you painted the interior parts of the plane which should be metal to metal. keepup the good work.

Hello, thanks for watching. This plane was just a light clean up nothing was painted on it.

Haha, these are just shop rags that we once used to wash the cars and are now too dirty to even do that so they get given to me.

I would just call this one very good cleaning and put back in use …… Not a restoring ( the work was very well done)

Thank you, but restoring is bringing back to a former condition, and I brought it back to a usable state, but yes I agree there are different definitions for it

Gerald is right. You didn't restore it. You cleaned it. Nothing more.

I’m glad he didn’t “restore it” some of these restorations I see are awful. This old tool need saving and now works a treat. Probably worth more with out paint etc that goes with full restoration.

Can't believe you didn't dismantle it completely. Shouldn't you rinse with water to stop the derusting process? I'm about to bid on one that has been welded together, no doubt it got dropped or fell off a vibrating bench, it's not this one is it.....? You do know how brittle cast metals are don't you? Jeezus h! that is NOT the correct way to sharpen a plane blade! And not a clue how to adjust that blunt blade, furniture wax? Where's the oil a tool like that needs? You really aren't very clever are you.
