A few years ago my sister's friend was touting Cicret on Facebook and I got into an argument with her about it. No matter how many articles or videos I linked, she refused to believe it's fake. She would just keep insisting that I need to do my 'research' and she mocked me for not being smart enough to understand. This is how they got so many donations. It's because of people like her.
Did she change her mind in the end?

Around 2019 the product's website has disappeared and the tweets and facebook posts regarding this product were removed. On their twitter they added one post - this video. On their facebook they added two posts- this video and the Captain Disillusion update.
Yup, the company ran away with the money, but not before giving everybody the middle finger.

@@douglask7366 Eh, I’m not sure they defrauded anyone. They released a concept video that anyone with two brain cells to rub together would know is impossible to make. They then solicited “donations” to make a prototype. Incredibly, lots of dumb people parted with their money and were surprised - LOL - when they didn’t get anything in return except for a 10 second video of an incredibly shitty prototype.
From what I’ve seen, Cicret never actually guaranteed the product would ever be released (they said it “could” be released), nor did they ever indicate the “donations” would ever be refunded in any circumstance. They did say the donors would get a discount if the product was ever released though.
The following are quotes from the donation terms on their website:
“The Donor is aware that the Company may not succeed in developing and manufacturing the Cicret Bracelet or that the final Cicret Bracelet may differ in size, design, colours or in any of the technical features showed on the Site.”
and
“The Donor is fully aware that the Donation is irrevocable and that the Project may only be completed if, among other conditions inherent to all kind of business launching, the total amount of the Donations is sufficient. As a result, the Company does not subscribe to any kind of obligations towards the Donors, the Donation being a free and irrevocable contribution to the Project.”
A fool and their money is easily parted. Hopefully all the donors learned an important lesson.

You're correct that it would be borderline impossible to convict them of fraud for this unless they literally admitted to it, but let's be real: the people that made this would have found out VERY quickly that what they're trying to do is straight up impossible, _especially_ back when they were trying to do it. If they ever talked to even one single person about how they'd [theoretically] make this device, they would have found out that there's just no way. They almost undoubtedly did that at some point. Which means they almost definitely knew that they were never going to be able to deliver on the product. Now I'm not 100% sure where they live, but that would absolutely count as fraud in many places, regardless of whether you call contributions "donations" or not.
It's genuinely almost impossible that they didn't find quickly find out that what they were trying to do was impossible. And then they decided to still try to make some money anyway. Lastly, it doesn't matter whatsoever whether "anyone with 2 brain cells would realize it was impossible", and that doesn't make something any less fraudulent. Poorly executed fraud is still fraud.

A class action lawsuit against the Cicret Bracelet team would be poetic justice. I hate the fact that CD spent $250 and still hasn't received anything.
I agree but the money has long since disappeared and non of the people involved will have any actual assets to liquidate. It will all be tied up in off-shore accounts and subject to the laws of other countries.
You know what fallout taught me? It’s that having a phone strapped to your arm kinda sucks. Why? Because you can’t use your other hand to interact with the screen. So things like typing is way slower. And trying to play games that were designed for two handed operation just doesn’t work.
Also because it requires absolutely both hands too actually effectively operate at all where as one that is help can leave one hand free too hold onto something important while doing something else important on your phone

It's startup business slang for when a company changes what kind of product they're making.
For that laser projection idea, what was the plan? To have a laser diode for each pixel? That's a lot of diodes! And then you only get one color. So you need three diodes per pixel, that can change their energy output from 0 to 100 at the speed of a single frame? So you'd need about 260,000 diodes that have the capability of 0-100 energy output within 1/60th of a second to project a 240x360 low-res image onto a surface. Simple! Easy! Affordable! Portable!

Probably sweeping a laser of each color across a surface. If you do it fast enough, persistence of vision kicks in. This is fairly similar to how old CRT TVs work, but instead of exciting phosphors on a screen, it is scattering laster light into your eyes.
You would need 3 diodes and some kind of really quickly moving mirror (probably impossible to fit in such a small space) to scan the beam across the surface. You would also need a diode that reacts very quickly, otherwise the resolution would be very low.

I just noticed something: in the first Cicret clip you show (at 0:54), the corner of the 'projection' partially overlaps the person's thumb. I'm surprised that it took me THIS long to notice; it's pretty glaring once you've seen it.

The part I find particularly glaring is how none of the fingers ever cast a shadow from a projector. Has no one falling for this ever been present when a projector was operating? It's damn near impossible to avoid getting in the way and casting shadows, even when you're not intentionally sticking your hand into the beam.
