4. 10mm hex 3/8" socket (for Drain and fill plugs)
5. 3" 3/8" extension (for the fill plug)
6. 3/8" breaker bar
7. A Pipe (for additional leverage on the breaker bar)
8. 3/8" torque wrench
9. A home made funnel
a. A universal transmission spout funnel (bought at Walmart)
b. A clear Vinyl hose 5/8" OD, 1/2" ID (bought at Home Depo)
c. A sharp knife or razor blade to cut the clear hose and the bottom of the ATF bottle.
10. A car jack
11. 2 jack stands
12. 2 rams or 4 jack stands
Torque Spec:
As the time of this video, torque spec for this vehicle is not available.
I'm using 30 foot pounds for the drain and fill plugs in this video (see update below).
Earlier model of this vehicle up to 2015 use 29 foot pounds.
**Update update update** 20Nov2021.
Just bought a CD repair manual from Honda for this vehicle. Below are the torque spec for this project:
Torque:: 50 N·m {510 kgf·cm, 37 ft·lbf}
Thank you Peter Sun for the online version of Prius owner manual. See Page 761 for type of transmission fluid type and capacity from Peter Sun under comment section:

Yyyyy
I’m so glad you were born. And then decided to make videos. Thank you sir.
Thank you for providing all of the part numbers in the description! :-)
Excellent video!!! Really detailed--and it really is only youtube video for the 2016-2020! Thank you!
I appreciate the tips and video! Great job! I am at 110k on my 2017 Prius prime so I am ready to change this oil.
best one I've seen..{and I've seen them all]]
The best I ever seen thanks from los gatos California
Cheers!!!
Absolutely great video 👍🏼 thank you
This video just helped me take off the cover ❤️ thanks fam, great video 👍
Thank you so much for your detailed video!! I really appreciate the time you took and your explications are great!!!
Thank you for your kindly comment.
Thank you for the excellent job and presentation.
There's another "fill plug" ( actually it is the real "fill plug" ) just a bit higher than the one you use it to fill the transaxle. The plug you use is the "checking plug" where you check the level of the transaxle fluid. The level of the transaxle fluid can be at the same level with the check hole or at maximum 8 mm ( aprox 0.31 inch ) lower than the hole.
When you use the proper "fill plug" you should make sure that it is completely clean around it because dirt present there ( it has a horizontal surface because the "fill-plug" is vertical and not horizontal like the one at the check hole ) can go into the transaxle.
However it is perfectly OK to fill the transaxle the way you did it trough the check hole because it is easy to see that the place around the check-hole is very clean or you can clean it very well.
At the time I make this video, I don't have all the technical data on this model. Unlike Honda, Toyota doesn't show any drawing on their web site. Wish I can get my hand on the repair manual for this model. For now, repair manual for this model only go up to 2015.
True Renegade / Look what I've found on the Internet about 2017 Toyota Prius Repair Manuals ( my text sent yesterday to dave valinty, down the thread ) :
"Yes, you find 2017 Toyota Prius repair Manuals by searching with Google at :
repairmanuals.co
Go into "Menu" on the first page / Products / scroll down to "Toyota" / and scroll down to "Toyota Repair and Service Manual, Choose your vehicle ( Instant Access) $29.99" / enter in the fields "2017 - Toyota Prius."
You pay $29.99 for the online manual and you can download and print everything you pay for.
The company is from Santa Clarita, CA and the phone# is at the bottom of their page if you need to talk to them.
Also more expensive is on eBay, where there's somebody from Tampa, Florida ( by eBay user name "pellogr-3" ) selling the whole repair manual on DVD ( for Windows and read very careful the conditions there ) for aprox $64.95+ 4.95 shipping ).
It is for all Toyota Prius 2015-16-17-18-19 and a different DVD for Toyota Prius Prime 2016-17-18-19, the same price.
In both cases if you're not satisfied you can complain with a valid and accepted reason to get refund.
Evidently, $29.99 is much better but it has to be the whole repair manual, complete."
@@mikel4879 Thanks!!! I will check it out when I get home.
It really is the best Prius transmission vid on youtube👍 great job…I’m going to try it this weekend…
Cheers!!! Hoping everything workout smoothly.
Very good video...thank you so much for your details in your video...very professional job.
Great work. You are a very smart man. Thank you.
Very well done video. Thank you for your effort and details.
Thanks allot great video you make look so easy that I decided to doit my self 45 minutes later finish you save me $400 at the dealership I subscribed and give👍
Great job!! So much easier than my ridiculous Scion iQ CVT! The only thing different I will do is to measure how much came out so I don’t add too much back in.
I think you snapped the drain plug 🤣👍
That is the sound of the bolt broke loose for the first time. I call it the 3D sound effect.
4th gen Prius repair manual calls for 37 ft*lb of torque on the drain plug.FYI.
It also calls for flushing the transaxle three times, but that seems excessive for a fluid they say doesn't even need to be changed ...
He updated this info in the description.
At the time of this video, I don't have the repair manual for it till Nov 2021. So the torque in this video at the time is from the previous model. I didn't see any instruction on flushing the fluid 3 times in the repair manual. Anyway, as common sense, if you change the fluid , run it for a month, then check it and if the color is not look as pink as the original, then flush it again. repeat this process until the fluid turn pink. Then change it every 3 years. Yes it sucks that this vehicle don't have a dip stick, but this process works for me and I been using it on all vehicles I owned. If you believes from the dealer that this fluid will last forever and you don't need to change it then more power to you !!!
@@truerenegade1095 Yeah, the repair manual is kind of insane and I would never follow it. It says to drain and fill, replace plugs, run the engine in maintainance mode for 30s, drain and fill, drain and fill AGAIN (why?), then finally replace the plugs with new gaskets. It also has a whole different chapter for the third drain and fill even though it's the exact same procedure.
@@joa8593 Agrees to the insanity of Toyota. According to the repair and owner manual, both listed the capacity is 3.8 Quarts.
When I changed this fluid, I use 3 1/4 quarts. That is approximate 1/2 quart of old fluid still in the system, so flush it 3 times is just a waste of fluid.
nice work
Great video thank you! Do you think it will be the same procedure for my 2019 Prime?
Thank you for this informative video!
Thank you! Do you have link for the washer’s set by chance?
The part number is in the description. Same part number for both drain and fill plugs/washers.
Just copy and paste this washer part on google:
90430-18008 Gasket, Drain Plug(HV) Replaced by:90430-A0003
It's the same for both fill and drain. Additional info are in the description.
Thank you!
Great video, explained all aspects of the job.
I have one question. Where did you buy the CD service manual. I looked online and can not find it anywhere. Please let us know where you got it.
Thanks again for a great video.
I bought it on Ebay for about $90.00. The same guy sometime sell it sometime not so you have to be patient. Unlike other E Manual, this is actually a program and it use the an old Flash Peak Slim Browser which came with the CD. Can't update the browser or it will not work.
Awesome video. Currently own two hybrids. This will help me in the near future. How dirty was the oil?
The oil look clean to me at 25,832 miles.
True renegade / You should change it at 60 000 miles ( by the manual ).
Just subscribed I will try this next day off
Any good tips on how to make sure you fill it to be perfectly filled?
You can lift the passenger side up higher than the driver side to get it perfectly fill. Just be careful since you will be under the car, and it will look awkward with the car higher on one side.
Hey bro , I have a question… I was told by my mechanic that he needs to also do drain the cooler when at the same time ..
I just looking at the Honda Technical manual for this vehicle and it doesn't show anything about draining the Trans cooler.
Thaks man,,with the 4th gen, there's no info...I'm still looking for the coolant change for 4th gen. Where's the drain plug???? for the Inverter????
INVERTER..drain plug...forth gen prius....
LeRoy West / At the radiator, bottom side ( the one above it looks the same but it is for the engine coolant, so be careful which one you unscrew ), plastic nut.
Will doing this on a 111k Toyota Prius MK4 damage anything in my transmission?
I don't drive the MK4 model so I don't know. You can look at the owner manual to check if it use the same type of fluid. Then remove the bottom panel, if the fill and drain plugs are at the same location, then you can do it yourself. If in doubt, take it to the shop and get it done there. Good Luck!!!
@@truerenegade1095 thank you, from watching your video again, I got the impression the car you have was the MK4 too? Which car is this in the video?
@@DaDdy79462 It's a Prius 3 Touring.
@@truerenegade1095 thanks, so we are a bit funny in the UK, you have the same car same but we call it a MK4/Gen4 over here.
@@DaDdy79462 Never been to UK so I would not know.

Is it me or is it kinda early for a trans service...
It's depending on how much miles you drive. Since the owner manual doesn't specify when to change the fluid, I decided to check it out around 25,000 miles and It look clean (2 years after I bought it new). I saw some videos on the earlier model changed their at 35,000 miles and it look very dirty (this prompted me to check out this fluid at 25,000 miles). So in my opinion, changing this fluid every 3 years or 45,000 miles in my case is a good maintenance.
You change your transmission oil too soon brother. Your oil still look crystal clear.
Yes it is. This vehicle doesn't have a dip stick so after 2 years I just want to check it out to see how dirty it can get.
Cox
du ma talk to much lol
I couldn't watch.
The video is ok on this end. May be the TH-cam server problem on your end? Sometimes it's temporary busy.
That prius need C V T fluid, not that ☝️ people Don't use that oil!
You will damage the transmission
You need to read the Prius owner manual. It will tell you what type of fluid use for your specific vehicle. I bought that fluid from a Toyota dealer.
True Renegade
This is a business.
Change the fluid after 35000 miles and you will see how black it is! When the fliud turns black, it means garbage!

@@lashapapava6072 I changed mine at around 35000 miles as you see in this video and the fluid came out look just like the new one.
Lasha Papaya / 2017 Toyota Prius ( 1-2-3-4 and "eco" models, etc ), maintenance by the manual : Engine oil 0W20 at 10 000 miles interval for "regular-normal" use or 5 000 miles interval for "heavy use" condition of the car ( or 6 months, whichever - miles or time - comes first ) / Engine Air filter and cabin air filter at 30 000 miles interval / Transmission fluid at 60 000 miles interval = "Toyota Genuine ATF WS" only as per manual / The engine coolant at 100 000 miles interval, Toyota Coolant Type or equivalent as per manual / The spark plugs at 120 000 ( iridium spark plugs, gap 0.035=0.9mm ).
Too much blah blah blah
Thanks, I feel confident now I can do it myself
Good for you.
