Bugging out with kids in toe makes staying in place and defending a well known location, access points, defilades, etc a preferable option. If you're lucky enough to live outside cities and know your neighbours well, you can create layers of mutual defence better than any castle. The caveat being it only works where there is a strong sense of community.

Depends on the situation. In a natural disaster, staying put may not be an option.

My first choice would be stay in place im in the country... The only reason for me to move would be a disaster like Palestine Ohio for example... so a plan b.. I like to fish in the lakes of Appalachia so a 4x4 camper is a lot of fun and works as a bug out...but i bet it will be a little crowded with strangers up there if shtf...

we use an electric blanket underneath us in colder seasons. I slept in my boxers when the temps got around 30F at night, in a Smittybilt RTT. it works great, because it warms up the bed instead of the air. the heat from the bed and us, warms up the air enough.

I was just talking to my wife about building a basic shell on my flatbed like this. I'm never going to pull a 5th wheel out west from Michigan that's for sure! I definitely would add something like a home base radio like i played with when i was a kid. I taped fiberglass rods together and pushed the antenna up the water heater vent pipe so it stuck out above our roof! LOL . Keep up the good work Mike!

Hi Mike, thanks for sharing. A quick temporary fix for your gray water outlet that’s dripping on your boxes would be a flexible “flap” of rubber, that you could wedge (or even tape for now) between the camper and the Bowen setup. Think a more flexible mud flap. Then you can protect your expensive truck bed from the funk, yet still access the boxes because it would just flip up out of the way. Then you’re also not having to hunt for adapters, and/or having to worry about getting them caught on a branch and ripping them off of the camper while on a trail or something. I enjoy your content brother, RLTW!!

I'll definitely follow this for tips and tricks.
I don't have enough money to buy and grade performance of anything.
I have to plan and plot everything out
Then adapt accordingly after a purchase.
    And I agree
    Chainsaw is very important
Not just for clearing paths but aiding heat and cooking wood fuel.

Add another battery and alternator to
The truck and run the 110 into the the scout and into the solar generator and then upgrade your solar panels you could even run a 12volt dometic ac unit off grid if you do it right !!

  • @airbornealltheway7961
    @airbornealltheway7961 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Nice rig Mike,,,the AC addition is a MUST

  • @willperry07
    @willperry07 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Mike, look at doing a a Redarc manager that has a DC booster/charger plus solar controller attached to a lithium battery bank. You will never have to worry about power in that rig after that.
Dometic does make a 12v AC unit that you could place at the roof vent. As long as your solar/lithium setup is adequate it would power it, or get a small genset to assist
Dometic also does a rechargeable water tank and faucet, havent tried it myself but might be an upgrade from the lifesaver.
Rig looks great, hopefully it serves your family well on your adventures.

Such an awesome setup. I’ve been looking at those Scouts and the Kimbo campers as well. I just got a katana boy 500mm folding saw for my rig. Not as efficient as a chainsaw but it’s lightweight, compact and doesn’t rely on fuel. I saw a guy build a backcountry cabin with one on the show Alone.

Those latches are common, a company called Sierra Pacific sells other options but I’m sure Grangers and McMaster-Carr have options also. Could add a lock to the middle so all you have to do is unlock once and then operate the latches. Have a fabricator put in a single lock per side that acts as a bolt that you have to unlock lift and pull to unlock the all of the doors in a row.

Awesome walk through! I have a Scout Olympic. You can get an adapter for the Yeti 1500X that allows you to charge through the 7 Pin or hook directly to the truck battery and charge off the alternator. Also, check out Joolca hot water on demand shower/sink. Way better than the Rinse Kit in my opinion and would be awesome for your set up. I'm excited to see your add-ons and mounting setups in the future.

Great video and really cool bugout rig, was thinking that you may want to get a Lav mic on top of a camera mounted mic (or the mic that is built into the phone if you were using a phone) so while editing you have 2 choices in audio incase the wind picks up or something interferes related to sound. It would be really awesome if you did a road trip vlog series where you travel across the US and take us along while you also teach cool survival and fieldcraft tips. Maybe even an outdoors live stream Q&A would be really entertaining.

Finally! Someone being honest about their Lifesaver. I kept seeing “Oh it’s great!” then the same person saying it fails in x/y/z manner, but “it’s still great!”

You can contact highway products for a better bed storage system and locking storage boxes. They use same we use in trucking industry. Use a Lance 1062 camper package which includes a shower, toilet system and a much better system cheaper. Thats my two cents. "Happy wife happy life" plus kids

Chainsaws are important in the backcountry. I’ve worked in several remote areas where outflows from storms have blown trees over blocking the only road out, especially in old burned out areas. Having a chainsaw with us allowed us the ability to easily deal with the situation. I think the worst day I dealt with this was in Central Idaho. A late afternoon thunderstorm knocked a bunch of widowmakers over. In the 20 miles to get out there were about a dozen foot plus diameter pine trees that we had to buck up to get our trucks and trailers out. Chainsaws, vital backwoods tool.

Alot of your cons are echoed by alot of cab over camper owners.
I opted for a lightly used 2020 fourwheel camper hawk flat bed model 85L fridge, flat top sink, flat top stove, two 6v batteries, one fantastic fan, outdoor shower. I work 4 days on and 3 days off. Those 4 days I spend in my camper. My job offers gym, shower, bathroom.
Wish the owner who ordered mine opted for the lithium batteries, dual solar, indoor bath and bathroom.
My set up is a ram 2012 3500 mega cab ( last year before def was introduced), 7' ute flatbed (super lightweight), hawk flat bed model, truck is on 35s x17" rims (so the spare fits in factory location),
Benefits to the pop top through FWC: they have been around since the 70s built for a rugged life. The masters of cab over camper world, fixed alot of the issues, 8.5' clearance on 35s with top down
    Cons: pop up, price.
Obviously bias opinion. But definitely worth a look
I bet you could get a hawk slide in Grandby model with all the bells and whistles and I think you would like that more than the scout.

Every RV is a massive compromise, you can never have enough stuff to live, especially with kids, and keep the rig small enough to be able to easily move and keep it fueled. I have been considering the 4x4 "super C" RVs because they are big enough to live in for extended periods of time without having to build an external camp every stop and they can somewhat go places.

Mike for the generator and for airconditioner problem i recommend the company ecoflow
good generators that you could live off grid with good panels
and they sell a small air conditioner that is suited for these generators or for people that live the van life type thing i have it myself and its frozen cold and has a setting that switches from ac to fan and you could power it with the electrical generator and lasts around 8-10 hours till recharge
i hope this info helps you in some way stay strong brother 💪🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
