- In this video, I'm taking a look at Overproof Rum and giving you a quick Rum Review of the 3 different styles and 4 different brands. There's a comparison of Wray and Nephew Rum vs Rum Bar Overproof Rum. Plus Plantation OFTD review and Pussers 151 Rum review. This is the ultimate side by side overproof rum comparison. Will Wray and Nephew reign supreme?! Or will the Rum Bar Overproof review beat it?

Fantastic overview Steve! We always have a bottle of Wray & Nephew kicking around, but it would be so great to try some others. We don't see a lot of these around too often... I really wish we could get some of the Pusser's line here in Ontario particularly. Thank you for this!

Goslings 151???
Hi Steve! Great review! I've only had OFTD and Wray & Nephew and enjoyed both. I don't think that you can get Rum Bar and Pusser's in my area.
Not sure where you are, but Rum Bar is deffo getting out there now. It’s Worthy Park and they’ve got pretty decent distribution 👍

I like to drink Overproof Rum straight at room temperature, so I am happy to see this video, but don't forget Ronrico 151.
I haven’t heard of Ronrico 151! I would assume with that name it’s from Puerto Rico?! Is it exported??
I've got a bottle of Sunset 84.5% vol 169 proof from St Vincent, from an old colleague who was from there and brought back, I haven't opened it yet, but reckon it will knock my head off. Tried the captain Bligh he bought back though

Rum Bar is sooo good. Exactly that. And one it out with a little water, it’s amazing.
I'm so sorry to hear you can't get Hamilton 151 over there! It's amazing. LH 151 adds some depth and proof, but the H151 is just brilliant. If you can get your hands on a bottle I think you'll be impressed. That, OFTD and Wray and Nephew are always on my shelf as overproofs that do completely different (and amazing) things in a cocktail.
Yeah, deffo gotta try and get some imported. I always hear great things and Hamilton Rums.

I’ve only had OFTD, and don’t regret the fact I haven’t tried anything else.
The OFTD is a bomb indeed. Especially as here in Germany you can find it pretty cheap over the internet (just over 20€). do you think it would work in a dark n stormy? just adding a little less than you would with a normal abv Rum would make quite a delight I imagine
Yeah, it'll make a great Dark & Stormy. But wow, thats really cheap!!!
also not bad is "Stroh" an austrian overproof rum, its 80%, could u please review it?
Ever try the bundaberg rum range? The UP rum is a bit .... avrage but youknow matter of taste and whatnot. It's an Aussie rum fairly good to mix with but lately there is different rums in the range including spiced rum and whatnot
Yeah, back in the early 00s when I spent some time in Sydney. Actually loved it back then. Not seen it since in the UK. (Mind you, not looked either).
@@StevetheBarmanUK it's probably very difficult to find in the UK. Infact I don't think it's imported. But as far as I am awear the range now is massive compared to then. I personally like the stuff it's affordable and not horrible but like if I can get a spiced rum on special I'm going for that I just prefer spiced rums to cane sugar rum
Do you have Australia's Beenleigh, or Bundaberg rums, over in the UK? Often wondered how they compared to the rest.
I have them... but no we don't get them really. Used to, but not any more! Done a video somewhere.... Beenleigh, Bundy, Husky and something else i've forgotten. Some Maple flavoured thing.
because i empty my bacardi 151 and no longer available anymore so i replace it with cruzan 151 now, what do you think sir ?
Not tried Cruzan, so can't comment I'm afraid. Cruzan is available here in the UK, BUT, it's a very un thought of brand.

. Don Q 151 is missing . From what you have there that ive tried plantions was really good
So if you had to pick between Plantation O.F.T.D and Pusser's Select Age 151 with no regard for the price, the Pusser's would win?
The reason I'm asking is that here in Denmark, the price between the two is very small (25 Danish Kroner ~ 2.5 British pounds).
Can’t remember what I said in that video, but now for me. Further in to this Rum Journey. If I could only pick 1 or the 2, Plantation OFTD cos it fits in more brackets. Sipping, Mai Tai’s, Punches etc. it’s not that it’s better, it’s just that I could use OFTD as my sole Rum in a Mai Tai. Where as Pussers, it’d be lacking the Jamaica vibes. So on that Basis, OFTD is more versatile. But both are amazing.

You mention these aren't mojito/daiquiri rums, but Rum-Bar OP makes a killer first daiquiri of the session, to get the mood going.

The only over proof rum I've got is don q 151,drank the Bacardi before they stopped making it though.
Would like to try Don Q. We do get it in the UK, but no one ever talks about it. Dunno why!

Only tried it once. Need to revisit the OP category. There’s quite a few out there now.

I like Rum Bar and Sunset Very Strong the most.
How funky is the Wray and nephew compared to Appleton signature?
If Appleton Signature is a 1 out of 10, Wray would be a 10 out of 10. But Hampdens and Longponds can get even more Funkier! For Ref, Appleton are not known for funk. Even in their 8yo and 12yo.
@@StevetheBarmanUK ok thanks. I’m more of a gin guy and just getting into rum. We don’t have a lot of selection at our stores. I just bought some el dorado 3 year which made a very good daiquiri. Better than the signature. But by themselves, the Appleton was better. Going to try the 8 year old Appleton next and try to hunt down a plantation 3 star. Wray and nephew is easy to find but is quite expensive, I presume due to the extra alcohol tax
Your explanation of proof is a little short. Yes, in the US proof is defined as 50% alcohol, but in the UK it was defined as 57% alcohol, and it's from there that the categories of underproof, overproof and proof were defined. Navy strength was then defined down from there to be 54.5%, but it's often equated with proof at 57%.
Yeah. You’re right. But of course as the UK hasn’t used Proof since the 80s… (that what i eluded to in history and dumbing it down) so that means technically Proof is now considered Double UK ABV %.
Which one pairs best with ice-cream?
Oooooooo, toughie... 50/50 with Pussers or OFTD. I want those Caramel vibes with an Ice Cream
I have a bottle of OFTD and the flavor is good if you can get past the alcohol. it's WAY too high proof for my purposes.

I'm surprised that you don't seem t have any rums from Grenada that i can see including Rivers from the oldest distilliary in the Caribbean at River Antoine. It's flavours and aromas are unique and comes in two ABVs 69% or somewhere around 90%.
Oldest distillery in the Caribbean?! 🧐 Think Mount Gay, Worthy Park and Appleton Estate (and a few others) may disagree with you there… But regarding, Grenada Rums, no I don’t have any. I’ll keep an eye out.
@@StevetheBarmanUK i guess they all claim that but the distilliary still uses a water wheel (I think thats the oldest in the world bit) and bagasse for fuel. Also look out for Dunfirmline, Westerhall, Clarks Couirt, Woodsman etc Rivers is available in the UK but due to it's popularity there its really expensive, but the unique flaour is worth it.
Another legend is that Grog comes from Grand Rum Of Grenada but more likely to do with sailors refering to Admiral Vernon and his Grogham coat ie Old Grog.

Everytime I seek Plantation OFTD I just think of the Try Guys video where they tried it and Justine decided it must stand for "Oh F*ck, their dead". Makes me laugh every time I see a bottle on shelf.
So, not really understanding how something can be more than 100 proof, wouldn't 100% rum be pure straight rum, 100 proof? Over proof just sounds like a way to raise prices.
Don’t see % and proof as the same thing. As I say in the video, 50% ABV is 100 proof. So any over 100 Proof (50% ABV) is therefore by default “Overproof”. Hence 151 which is 151 Proof and 75.5% ABV. So you’re quite right, nothing can be over 100% proof. But then again, apart from Stroh, I’ve never ever seen anything over 80% ABV which is 160 proof 👍
@@StevetheBarmanUK Thanks, I'm trying to understand. We have a rum here that says 92 proof but 40% ABV. I guess thats where I get confused.
@@justyntyme114 92 proof would be 46%, not 40%. Anyway, pot distilled rum typically reaches over 70% or 140 proof, collumn distilled rum goes from 75% or 150 proof to 95% or 190 proof, all approximately. From whatever proof it comes of the still at it will usually be proofed down with water to whatever proof it is eventually bottled at, often also at intermediate steps if it is aged.
