  • Because no one else was giving the king of Jamaican overproof rums a proper review (with a glass of water and an eyedropper instead of shooting it and making funny faces).
    63% ABV, probably bottled in 2019. It's terrific. 86+/100.

    Very well crafted. You will not find a more versatile mixer out there. This goes with anything. I mean anything. Creamy or fruity.
    This with fresh coconut water is just beautiful.

      @@differentspirits4157 In all seriousness though, well done. I appreciate a serious review of Wray & Nephew White Overproof. From what I understand, it is definitely a rather polarizing acquired taste. It is one of the rums I haven't mustered the nerve to try yet. I just uncorked my first serious Jamaican rum today, Appleton 12 Year Rare Blend, and I absolutely loved it. I will try Smith & Cross next, and if I enjoy that level of funk then I will muster the courage to buy a bottle of the (in)famous Wray & Nephew White Overproof. I am researching Wray & Nephew now in anticipation, which is how I came across your review... which I thoroughly enjoyed.

    • @differentspirits4157
      @differentspirits4157  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Appleton 12 is one of the classics. In many ways W&N (as a blend of pot and column distillate) is actually more like an unaged Appleton than it is like S&C, which of course is pure pot still stuff. It's really the bottling strength that gives W&N its reputation, not the aggressiveness or even the funkiness of the spirit itself (that's what my Rum Fire video is all about). That doesn't mean it's not still polarizing, but lots of stuff in spirits is polarizing. And there aren't a lot of videos on youtube of folks shooting Springbank or Thomas Handy. :)

    • @differentspirits4157
      @differentspirits4157  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't! W&N keeps the blend secret, so I'm guessing. Certainly you wouldn't use dunder for the column-distilled portion of this, but I'd guess even most of the pot distillate has been kept relatively low-ester. In retrospect I am pretty sure there's some heavier marques in there for top notes (especially after reviewing a NYE/HM th-cam.com/video/4OlU6bD1axA/w-d-xo.html ), but I doubt that they make up much of the final composition.

    Met this rum first at a Caribbean party in Hackney / London a couple of years ago. I first thought it must have been a cheap spirit based on the strong alcoholic kick, but the sweet sugarcane aftertaste really reeled me in. Loving it ever since! Actually, having a rum coke with it right now...

  • @kirks.1854
    @kirks.1854 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think this tastes quite a bit like mezcal. Very atypical rum. I can't believe it's so popular in Jamaica where so much incredible rum is made. The finish of W&N white overproof is a touch sweeter than mezcal. I am reminded of a review I did for Lost Spirits in 2017 for The Whiskey Wash. This stuff reminds me of those whiskeys. Brian Davis used THEA (Targeted Hyper-Esterification Aging / his term) to create his strange whiskies. I didn't really like them and I didn't trust they were safe to drink. I gave away the bottles after I did my review and I never swallowed the whiskey that I tasted. For me, the finish of W&N overproof is the best part. I'm not a huge mixologist but I suspect this rum's popularity hinges almost entirely on mixing it into tropical drinks.

    • @differentspirits4157
      @differentspirits4157  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      At least part of its popularity hinges on its strength as a mixer, yes!
      You'll be disappointed to hear that I also maintain a fondness for the Lost Spirits range :D (although I liked the old, pre-THEA Leviathan far more than anything in the current lineup).
