The increase of the negative space in the 2015 Channel 4 logo was to increase legibility at small sizes (web, basically). They found a happy medium with the current one.
The FIVE Logo only lasted 3 years because RTL sold the channel to Richard Desmond in 2011, who for some reason wanted to have his own rebrand of the Channel...
Channel 5 is actually emerging as a decent channel - and has come a long way from its low budget, wobbly beginnings - back in 1997. It has alot of good programmes now. Unfortunately the same can't be said for Channel Four, which has become increasingly tacky and vulgar over the last decade. More 4 is infinitely better than its older sibling. I always think the main Channel 4 as being very odd these days. It's a channel stuffed with tat, raucous (not very funny) comedy, and just quite alot of rubbish programmes. All this exists around a serious in-depth, quality News programme. But this has been the case for many years now. All the interesting, thought provoking programmes are now on More 4, while Channel 4 itself gets the junk, and the bits More 4 doesn't want. Channel Five is a much more 'balanced' channel now. With Five Extra filling the 'More 4' role, though not quite aswell. Overall the main Channel 5 is imo, better now than the main Channel 4. You couldn't say this five years ago. Channel 5 is looking good, but Channel 4 needs a bit of a 'shake up'.
Channel 4 is a great channel. First Dates / Grand Designs / Location, Location, Location /Gogglebox / Love It Or List It / Police Documentaries / Channel 4 News/ Dramas like The Great / Comedies that first appeared on Ch4 including The Inbetweeners / Father Ted /Peep Show. Though I agree today's comedy offerings fall well below those shows. But overall Channel 4 has programmes that I regularly watch unlike Ch5 that only one of their programmes ever interest me, that being the Hotel Inspector (which I believe first started out on Channel4!).
@Test_Card_Tom No - I disagree. Apart from it's in depth News, the rest of the channel is just not my bag. Tawdry, vulgar, deliberately provocative programmes made for a baseline audience who get off on such things. It's just not my thing at all. More 4 - yes; but not the main Channel 4 (except the News). I stand by what I originally said - Five is considerably better than the main Channel 4. Nothing has changed in the six months since my original comment.

To be honest I don't think Viacom/Paramount-owned Channel 5 is being a Channel 4 carbon copy that much. I mean both channels have their numeral logos made out of different shape blocks.
For me the “five” logo in lowercase in Helvetica Neue was my favourite logo for this channel. Something about it to me helped it stand out from other channel identities at the time and made the letters nice & fat. It also had the best idents the channel had given, the ones around the 2004 period are easily my favourite. The 2011 logo felt like a huge step back. Regardless of if it took inspiration from a certain other channel. But hey ho, that’s just probably me. 🤷🏻♂️
You'd be surprised to know that the late Italian media tycoon Silvio Berlesconi nearly won the auction for Channel 5 frequency, so it would've been like Canal 5 from Italy.
It a bit too far for terrestrial Channel 5 frequency to travel from Italy unless the tv broadcaster use Satellites links to connect to the transmitters in the UK and who would want to watch a Channel 5 in Italian.
Definitely prefer the numeral for Channel 5 over it being written out but for me their most recent one is the best. You're right though, it's a shame their idents don't match the energy the logo itself gives. The bottom half of the 5 has always reminded me a little of James Bond
I feel like I'm going to change the way some people might think of these logos from now on. So, here goes. In the 'modern' slimmer version of the Channel 4 logo it is possible to see a '4' from the 'Film 4' logo. (Look at the centre of the logo and you can see it). In some of the 'Channel 5' logos (where they are numbered) you can see it is actually composed of a 'C' and a '5'. (This may only be possible when turned at certain angles only? But you get the idea). The bottom part of the '5' seems to be extensively shaped in this fashion; from the very beginning, right up to the present day. (Or is it just me who gets this/these like this?).
I'm not a fan of Channel 5's current logo, but I actually think their presentation/graphics are the best looking since the era shown at 10:54 (An era where their programming showed a lot of potential and their ratings were strong). Most of their presentation has come across very cheap (And indeed usually depends on what company owns them that week). And yeah I prefer a numeral too, but at least when it was "five" it removed it further from "Channel 4".
I was doing media studies (yurrrgh) back when C5 was about to come into existence. I storyboarded a whole trailer for a fictional noir detective show - it was black with voice-over and strong heartbeat sounds (the teacher *hated* it) and finished with a brief shot of the cast before a five logo I came up with (partially by accident) by wrapping the word 'five' around a shape in one of the Microsoft office suite of programmes. It looked like a whirlwind with a gaping maw and face silhouette on the right side. I called it (as a young teen would), 'leaping wind'. (My teacher hated that too. Come to think of it, I don't think he liked me very much either...) I still think it was a really strong logo and would have given an incredible and unique brand identity to my version of C5.

I think, for me, my ideal Channel 5 ident (if not logo) is the one prior to the one they've currently got with the 5 coloured stripes they launched the channel with (likely using the blue, orange, pink, yellow and green stripes instead of the red circle, which I associate with early channel 5 more than the actual logo) - I dunno, maybe it's because I was watching the launch of Channel 5 that really emphasized those five coloured stripes live during my childhood.

They take formats and ideas that do well on other channels especially channel 4, such as 24 hours in A&E, poverty porn, etc and create their own shitty cheap version of it. And everything else is just leeching off current events, like knocking up a quick documentary on the Willy Wonka Experience using nothing but stock footage and tweets found online about it. Don’t get me started on the constant greatest songs or adverts of the 70s/80s episodes they put out, where they have the same conveyor belt of talking heads reacting to everything. The whole channel is just unoriginal budget content. Except for the drama series no one else bids for
First we had ITV ripoff the BBC and now Channel 5 Is doing the same to Channel 4. If that doesn’t show how unoriginal and lazy channels can be, then I don’t know what does.
Hmm I don't think Channel 5 is a ripoff 🤔🤨
I mean Channel 4 and Channel 5 are owned by the same company so technically they could go under the same banner.
Same company? Channel 4 is a non-profit public entity, wholly owned by its namer parent company, Channel Four Television. Channel 5 is a private channel owned by Paramount, with MTV UK acting as a sister channel.
Bruh where tf did you get that information from
@@lance941 Remember when Channel 4 went down for months in 2020 - Channel 5 did the same thing as they are in the same building
@@JoeyTheBeastHD Are you talking about the News? ITN does power the news on ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, with studios set in the ITN buildings. Otherwise Channel 4 and 5 are still thier own seperate entities.
Also I dont remember the channels going down about that time.
TVs should be plugged into the mains socket, Adam's fingers, not so much😂
