“Gly”: Hey Matt! My Jeep (Old Bob) has the exact same engine from Golen Engine Service that your Banana has. Three years ago when mine suddenly died on the trail it turned out to be a defective CPS (Crankshaft Position Sensor). The one I had in Old Bob was an aftermarket sensor from Amazon but once I installed a MOPAR sensor the problem was gone. Hope this helps.. love the show!

Put a scope on your sensor and see if it is actually sending pulses, and if it is, put a scope on where those wire end up on the ECU and ensure that it is actually getting to the computer. Could just be a broken wire or connector.

Yes sir. Eric O at SMA auto has proved this time and time again. OEM is best and just because a sensor is new doesn't mean it's good. Could be a hidden wire with the green crustys too.

Besides from obvious sensor failure, when this happens to me it is usually the loss of ground to one or another main component...
If a component uses a bolt hole with ground tab , inspect it for electrolysis build up/corrosion. This is a real problem for some vehicles.
    FYI
I sometime have had to add / splice a ground connection to a ground wire in the wire harness because nothing else worked, Also some wires work with a low voltage Paulse rather than constant power, these wires are delicate and should not be ignored during inspection, any little damage is huge to these wires, any small imperfection should be closely examined and tested/ replaced.
For some people these problems are easy to diagnose because they will test things in a specific pattern, List's are available from ASE training manual's and probably available on the web? .. LOVE THE SHOW !!!

Magnetic inductance sensors can be a real pain they send waveform signals in the form of low voltage power through the ground side and that signal is what the computer uses for fuel and spark mapping.

You want a Mopar CPS. I tried multiple aftermarket and I like cheap parts, but it’s one of those parts. Also, it takes 10 mins to pull the entire engine wiring harness, unsheath it and go through the entire thing. I found numerous frayed wires on multiple XJ’s. It’s good piece of mind. Btw, my wife did go off-roading with me again after her run in with Casey. Thanks Matt!

About the banana, while removing the cam sensor , ya gotta be careful how you remove and install the cam sensor, I wonder if he knocked the timing off while removing it or trying to wiggle it back in there ..., on the top of the sensor itself if you remove the body/plastic peice on top double check to make sure it's aligned there is a hole in the side of it and inside on the thing that spins, they must aligned, stick somthing in there to align the holes together, its like a tooth pick size hole basically, with the plastic body piece off, while standing on the passenger side directly facing the engine, look down in the hole of the block and make sure the oil pump Grove is basically perpendicular with the block slightly turned to the rear of the jeep just a hair, while putting the shaft of the sensor in there the helical gear will want to naturally turn that slot in the oil pump straight perpendicular with the block aligning the shaft of the cam sensor and slot of the oil pump together and the holes you aligned inside the sensor should be basically facing you directly, once aligned and put inside then put the plastic body piece back on,theres a few you tube videos of how to do this that are right on the money, its definitely critical to the engine firing, id also to make sure to buy mopar grade parts also.

Also could be the fuel pump solenoid which is soldered to the circuit box. There is a work around with add-a-fuse wires.

Those Jeeps are known for breaking the plug on the long coil pack and causing them to randomly shut down. Since all 6 coils are built on a single assembly it sucks that there is no easy way to make them individual and you just have to replace the whole unit. Be careful with the plug because being too forceful with it will cause the same problem because the plastic is extremely easy to crack. Good luck.

What always goes bad on those 4.0 Jeeps is the cam sensor cap. It has a little square magnet inside.. If you just pull the plastic cap and look under it, that magnet should be glued to the plastic cap... When it falls off, it will stick down inside the metal parts and cause your "new cam sensor" cap not to read correctly. So look for that. Another thing is the Crank sensor is very sensitive to the depth that it's mounted.. So pull the crank sensor and make sure the mounting surface is clean and flat and not rusty. between these two things, it should have no issues otherwise and is very reliable.

To you Jamie, you're Fancy. On the Banana, I've found that if you disconnect both terminals for five to ten minutes. Before you reconnect the terminals, hold them together, touching them will ground out any built up static electricity in resistors, capacitors and such. I tried it on my Ford Freestyle when it would go into limp mode, and a Jeep Cherokee similar to Banana's body style. Check all grounds and have a good charge on the Battery. Worth a try. Peace!

Check the 5v feed to all the sensors, if it's wrong, disconnect all the sensors and see if you have 5v back again. If you have, reconnect each sensor one at a time checking for 5v after each one is connected. I suspect that one of the sensors will pull the 5v down. With the faulty sensor replaced or disconnected, I bet it'll start right up...

Reasons my 96 XJ 4.0 hasn't started in the past:
    1) Distributor rotor rivet broke off (this one has happened a few times). This one only applies if it's a crank-no-start.
    2) Fuel pump pseudo-failure; it still pumped, it just didn't pump enough. Crank and sorta start.
    3) Battery cables just weren't good any more and couldn't supply the current-carrying capacity to do the thing. Crank and start with a jump every time.
    4) Bad electricals in the ignition key switch. ALL the other functions worked, just not the ignition circuit. Crank-no-start.
Would need more info to narrow your problem down though. But, the "failure" of the ECM is kinda suspect, it kinda sounds like it reported the cam sensor and itself bad which screams (at me) check the + and - main wiring.

I've owned my 1995 Jeep Xj "Charlene" for 11 yrs now. I work on her myself, I don't take her to a mechanic unless necessary. I've done everything from a tire change to half an engine rebuild. So, I thought I'd give my input on the Banana's starting problems: have you checked the neutral safety switch? When they start to go out, the vehicle doesn't know if it's in neutral or gear, and refuses to start. Sometimes they can be cleaned, sometimes they need replacement. I went through the whole process of wire diagnostics, changing the battery, starter solenoid, ignition switch, etc, before finding out about the Neutral Safety Switch. One thing that can help diagnosis this, is wiggling the shifter when trying to start the vehicle, pushing it towards park or neutral can help assist the start. If it does, then this is the issue. Hope this helps!!

The first thing I would try with the Banana is to verify the 5 volt reference voltage from the PCM to the cam and crank sensors. It is an Orange wire. Pin #17 at the engine computer. I would expect a minimum of 4.5 volts from it with the key on. Check this WHILE the sensors are plugged in. If you have no or low voltage at that wire, unplug the sensors and see if it comes back. Also, the brown/yellow wire will be the sensor ground, which is shared by pretty much every sensor under the hood. GM and Chrysler computers of that era are notorious for losing communication when that 5 volt reference is shorted to ground. I am not sure if the XJ computer has that same "flawed" electronic architecture. This orange wire also provides power to the throttle position sensor and MAP sensor, so you may want to make sure to disconnect those as well to ensure they are not shorted. For example, I just fixed a no-start on an 09 Wrangler that had an aftermarket MAP sensor that went bad and the computer threw codes for the gas pedal position and camshaft position and basically everything on that circuit EXCEPT the MAP sensor.
If voltage is good, the next thing to check is to make sure the signal is getting to the PCM from the cam/crank sensors. This is difficult to do conclusively without an oscilloscope which is too expensive for a good one and most people are too unfamiliar with electricity to know how they work. They are basically a glorified volt meter. Like how a graphing calculator is to a regular calculator. But you *can* use an LED test light (an incandescent one probably draws too much power). While it is cranking, it the LED should flash when attached from that wire to ground. The cam sensor is a Tan/Yellow wire that goes to pin #18 at the PCM The crank sensor is a Grey/Black wire that goes to pin #8 at the PCM. This will indicate "A" signal and not necessarily a "good" signal.
Of course, aftermarket cam/crank sensors are notoriously garbage. As are throttle position sensors. And MAP sensors. So, it would not surprise me at all if they are bad right out of the box. Been there, done that. I seriously dislike the parts cannon, because you can so easily be shooting blanks these days. If you don't hit the target, you can adjust your scope all day long and still not hit the target because there's no actual bullets leaving the barrel.
Of course, if the PCM is dead and none of the above tests are relevant, make sure it has power and good grounds getting to it. If the CHECK ENGINE light does not illuminate and the fuel pump doesn't cycle with the key, those are signs of a dead computer or one that isn't getting power and grounds. Pin 31 and 32 are Black/Tan ground wires and the diagram says that they are on the engine near the starter. Of course, make sure the engine itself is well grounded, which it should be if the engine cranks. Fused B+ is Dark Green/Black at pin 22. Ignition power is pin #2 Dark Blue/White. I recommend testing these with an incandescent test light that actually draws a notable amount of power. A volt meter doesn't draw enough, so if there is some kind of resistance in the circuits, a multimeter won't determine that. However, being in the desert where wire corrosion isn't an issue, the wires are PROBABLY doing their job and you PROBABLY do not need to use a test light.
If all of this checks out good, it would not surprise me if the oil pump drive gears are stripped out and the distributor isn't turning. If Golen is using Comp Cams camshafts, and a high volume oil pump, I would seriously make sure the distributor is still turning before doing anything.
If all that checks out, getting the communication going will be key, if it is not already key. To do this, the aforementioned oscilloscope is helpful. A cheap one will suffice, and you can attach it to the OBD2 connector to check for the communication. I would attach to pin 7 (pink) and pin 7 (light green/black)

    I have a '95 and an '01.
The '95 had an issue where a shorted o2 sensor wire that was routed too close to the exhaust shorted. It flipped the fuel safe relay and left me with a crank no start and also blew a 40 amp fuse.
I chased that for months. The fuel rail wires will shut it down quick, and I went through the same replacements you have been.
Alsolow fuel on a hot job and a low tank followed by a shutdown and new cold gas will seize our fuel pump. So you may have 2 issues.
Hope you find the fix, watching you on the banana helped keep me working on my jeep for 2+ years before I got it driving again.

I'm going to add another vote for a faulty ground somewhere. When it happened to me, it turned out to be a ground wire attached to the engine block near the dipstick. I don't know why, but that's where my computer was getting it's primary ground. The wire fatigued and broke at the factory-crimped connector but I missed it for 3 months because the electrical tape around the connector was holding onto the wire making it look intact. I was so frustrated I replaced the broken wire with 2 separate runs, each with it's own connector. If one fails, I'll still be good. Still hard for me to believe that's where the computer is getting it's ground. Good luck Matt and crew! You folks are my favorite TH-camrs!!
