I get asked a lot about my blu-ray shelves. Here's a video all about them and where to get them ---> th-cam.com/video/kU311QK1cfk/w-d-xo.html
I think the main reason why Paths of Glory is letterboxd’s highest rated Kubrick film is because it’s the perfect combination of being the best and least disagreeable at the same time. 2001 is my favourite film ever but many would find it too weird. Then Barry Lyndon I adore but some would find it boring. A Clockwork Orange is electric but many are disturbed and put off. Eyes Wide Shut’s themes may be too concealed for some etc… Paths of Glory is simple, humanist and super powerful. It’s tough to hate it and thus receives way less low ratings. But I actually doubt it’s most people’s favourite Kubrick.
Lone Star is one of the best films of the 90s, I still vividly remember watching it in the cinema and being deeply affected by it. Criterion have done a great job on a movie which I thought would never see a 4K release. Thanks for the heads up on The Straight Story, missed that one completely! Keenly anticipating your end of year Top 10.
The Ealing film is the best of the bunch. You sir are a connoisseur of film art.
Thank you! You have good taste too
I was gonna take a nap, but this changes everything!
Highly recommend the new 4k from Shout Studios for Robocop 2. Genuinely blew me away visually. No idea how they got the film to look so incredible. I can only imagine that they shot the film on high quality fine grain film stock because of the amount of effects shots and compositing that they were going to be doing. It looks just stunning. One of the best restorations I have ever seen.
Ordered it along with blown away 4k. Never seen both. Can’t wait.
amazing transfer visually....to my surprise i enjoyed the Laser Disk audio transfer. I got a Atmos theater set up, yet 2 channel Laser disk audio remaster kicks butt.
Just picked up that Holdovers 4k. Glad to hear I did the right thing!
New sub via the algorithm. I'm about to explore your channel now. It's refreshing to find an emphasis on drama, my favorite genre. I sub a YTer whose channel is similar to yours, but he's heavily into horror. Don't get me wrong. I have a (curated) horror section in my library of 250 disks. I just don't care much for the recent stuff.
The only problem I see is that now that I'm here, and have made my own list based off your top 10, I'll spend even more! Some of these are pricey. The good stuff usually is.
@@dallasguy3306 it’s great to have you here! Thanks for watching
Excellent video, as always. Question: I saw another release of Paths to Glory in 4K from another label. Have you done any comparisons to the one featured in this video?
Studio Canal consistently hits it out of the park. My most trusted label.
I totally agree, but include an honourable mention for Arrow films.
I watched “The Straight Story” tonight. It was fantastic. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.
Great list Elliot. My favorite Lynch film as well. I will search for this and try and get it to the US. Thanks!
@@Celestialrob thanks for watching Rob. I hope you’re well!
UK viewer, what are VS like to buy from and import to the UK ?
Right on Elliot !
Thank you for giving me a Keith Carradine movie I haven't heard of!
Dear friend, do you believe that physical media will remain for many years, or will the market decline? I'm Portuguese and I'm thinking about importing and starting my collection, as all my films are in digital version.
@@tiagorocha8659 I do strongly believe it’ll be around for many, many years. The market is shrinking, the major studios are doing fewer releases, but the boutique labels are growing and they will carry the flag in the future. So I say yes, start a collection! You will have it forever
I own all but two of these films in 4K (The Holdovers, Peeping Tom and The Straight Story). I streamed The Holders but don't need to own it. I own the Criterion DVD of Peeping Tom, which enough for me. And, I remember liking The Straight Story a lot, but can't believe I don't own it. I tried buying the French 4k release of The Straight Story from your link, but the info is all in French and a French address is needed to make the purchase. So, I went on eBay and bought the same item (new) from a seller in Canada for $70. I have an all-region Blu-ray player, so Region B is OK by me. Thanks for the info!
P.S. I own Southern Comfort in 4K but only because I just now bought it using your link.
Elliot you’re killing me! Where’s I Am Cuba???
*cries uncontrollably
Loved your picks, Elliot. Would be morbidly curious to see your “worst 4Ks of 2024 so far” list as well 😂
Lone Star is astonishing
The Crow!
All great movies i blind bought The wages of fear BFI 4k based on your recommendation….its great. I’d ad the A24 4k release of Zone of interest, fantastic movie.
Mean Streets limited edition isn't sold out and its July now, I imagine too expensive for most folks when they can get the standard releases.
Price certainly is a factor these days but I’d also bet this particular release had a high print run from Second Sight due to the popularity of the film and filmmaker. I’m very glad they offer the standard 4Ks at the same time to give people more options.
what shelves do you use for your blu-ray’s?
@@TheReese96 I have lots of information on them in this video -> th-cam.com/video/kU311QK1cfk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=1HnkeghSuN4cyQMV
Hi, I am looking for a good 4k Player , do you have a recommandation ?
I’m a bad person to ask this! I haven’t bought a player in years and I’m still using my Oppo UDP 203 which is amazing for what I need. Sadly Oppo don’t make players anymore, so I don’t know what I’ll buy when it breaks down. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful!
Check out Reavon (very similar to Oppo) or the higher Panasonic lineup.
Seriously considering importing The Straight Story but I know that if I do, Criterion or Arrow will announce it 🙃
And I LOVE that VSU of Southern Comfort. Might be my favorite release this year and there just might be a Substantive Cinema on that one with a Letterboxd editor coming soon 👀
I was wondering, what are you thoughts about the new old boy and memories of murder. They are two of my favourite Korean movies and I have been thinking of getting those with the new 4K out
I thought Lone Star was a bit too dark, but very good transfer.
I didn’t notice any overly dark sections but I’ll have another check. It could be differences in our TV panel settings. Cheers!
I thought the transfer looked great (but I also watched it on an oled where everything including Heat and Inglorious Basterds looks great). I feel like I'm the only person in the world though who doesn't think the story is good and didn't enjoy the movie because of it.
@@ElliotCoen It was actually The Holdovers transfer that I found to be very very dim
@@tjdw5251Decent enough film but I loathed the faux 70s look
I couldn't understand the fuss over Mean Streets.. i am still waiting for Kubricks "Eyes wide Shut"unrated 4k was announced back in 2022!!!? it was rumoured for the 20th anniversary? yet nothing..BS😢
"Southern Comfort" !! absolutely amazing, very enjoyable film and easily best release of 2024.
No holdovers in 4k in the USA , have to import it 😢
The Wages of Fear sounds like "The Sorcerer" which is same story set in South America.
It's the same movie but Wages is the earlier movie.
Hey Elliot, You should retitle top 10 4k catalog title 2024 so far 🤔
@@808physicalmedia9 why?
@@ElliotCoen Because you have no current 2024 4k uhd new releases? Just old catalog 4k uhd movies & it's misleading in my opinion 🎥 lol 🍿
@@808physicalmedia9 literally the first film I talk about is Dune pt. 2 - a film released in 2024.
I think you’ve just misread the video title rather than it being misleading, as no one else has mentioned it. Clearly I’m talking about 4Ks released in 2024 and not just films first distributed in 2024.
So, no retitling required but thank you 😎
Trainspotting tho...
I love The Holdovers but the shot-on-video mimicry of a 1970s 35mm film could have been better. It’s fine, but why not just shoot it on 35mm? Compared to the overall production cost, it would not have added much to budget. The low budget indie film, The Love Witch was shot on actual 35mm film and looks way more authentic.
The Crow 4K and
Conan the Barbarian 4K are among the very best 4K releases of the year!
Major fail on your part not mentioning them… 😔
second british reviewer of 4k movies i've watched. im starting to think my tastes in movies arent the same. no doubt these likely make good 4k transfers but i have zero interest in the majority of these films. how does dune 2 get honorable mention lol what is the criteria for best 4k of the year. oh well thats 16 minutes i wont get back
Hey, thanks for watching first of all. I appreciate it. As for differing tastes, it happens. I hope you can stick around and at least discover 1 new film you like via my videos. I'm always happy to recommend new things if you let me know what you like! Cheers
13:19 But the Imprint rekease from 2021 was from a restored 4K master?
Unfortunately not. I know it was advertised as such but it’s a miscommunication on Imprint’s part. It was the same old dated looking master. The only 4K restoration of The Straight Story was finished in 2023, overseen by Lynch - see here for more info (notes at bottom of page) - festival.ilcinemaritrovato.it/en/film/the-straight-story/
@@ElliotCoen Their website still states it is from a 4K master... Oh dear.
It's a dry year 2024
The Holdovers is depressing.
@@tgrujic1965 I won’t deny, but cathartically so. You should see my list of my favourite movies of all time if you want to see depressing!
Damn! 58$ for the A24 „Stop making sense“ UHD is a bit heavy even if it’s a Must have for my collection.
It is an expensive one! I think we’ll see a standard 4K release from a label in time so it could be worth waiting for a cheaper copy. Cheers
@@ElliotCoen I usually don’t have a problem with expensive UHDs… but 58$ is just wow! … let’s see if we get a standard UHD edition someday
