  • I did not enjoy the episodic TV format of Kenobi, but what if it was cut into a movie experience? I review the Kai Patterson Fan Cut of Kenobi, excising many superfluous scenes to give us a leaner, more engrossing beast. But can an edit solve all of the show's problems?

Seems to be a theme with Disney+ shows- they need to change their formulas. FATWS and Loki had a lot of easter eggs and cameos that really benefited them and connected them to the wider universe, and WV has more than 6 episodes (whatever happened to that?!), but going into a series like this you want it to be essential, you don’t want to watch and think “this isn’t important to the wider story”. At least the finales have all been Ws for the most part

Going in I had realistic expectations of this series due to Disney Star Wars output. Overall I think it was worthwhile to do but I wondered even before it came out if it would have been better to change this once movie into a series back into an extended streaming movie. The major structural change I would have made is getting rid of Part IV (which is really, really ineptly put together) and ending Reva's story on Jabiim. This cut does the more important one and ends Reva's story far stronger. The whole Reva on Tatooine makes no sense because it has Obi-Wan fail to protect Luke, leaves Reva alive which is not only ludicrous due to her injuries but also to Vader who makes a point of finishing his enemies off not to mention how can Obi-Wan legitimately allow the family to stay on Tatooine? They are going to place complete faith in a crazed killer like Reva just because she feels sorry for herself? What if she changes her mind? It's too much of a risk to stay on Tatooine at this point.

    • @sinan_3384
      @sinan_3384 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Or none of these themes should have been used because none of those themes have any significance on this encounter between Vader and Kenobi. Anakin’s dark deeds have already been done, this duel doesn’t decide anyones fate and neither of these two are heroes anymore.

    • @itsthemumu8585
      @itsthemumu8585 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@sinan_3384 isn’t Obi-Wan Kenobi a hero for the people on that ship? Isn’t he their only hope? Does Leia not look up to him like a hero? Did Obi-Wan not say “either I kill him, or he kills me”? Did they not give each other absolutes before starting their duel? Did Anakin Skywalker not die in Obi-Wan’s eyes at the end of their duel? Did he not realize after seeing the face underneath that the man he called his brother was now a malicious killer without remorse?
The logic you’re presenting is like saying “oh, they played the Imperial March one time in The Empire Strikes Back. It’s been done, we shouldn’t have to hear that again.” The music in the scene was very average, didn’t have much of a Star Wars vibe to it, and didn’t pull on the heart strings the way it could have if it used a familiar tune that fit the tone of the duel, rather than some lame free TH-cam music that you don’t remember. There’s a reason composers come up with themes and reasons we remember them, because the music ITSELF made us feel a certain way. We remembered it, and the way we felt or what we saw when we heard it. So yes, the duel should’ve had a completely different score that stole the show.

    • @sinan_3384
      @sinan_3384 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@itsthemumu8585 using theme subtleties is one thing, using entire themes for a whole sequence is another. Yes Obi Wan was a hero to the people on the ship and to Leia but Battle of the Heroes determined the fate of billions across the galaxy is my point not just some one off encounter. For me, shoehorning those themes into the context in this show is just a cheap fan service. It diminishes the value of those themes and their significance to their original uses

I prefer Anakin's Dark Deeds over Duel of the Fates And Battle of the Heroes, for sure, but I think I may be in a minority that prefers the OST from the actual show itself. We don't need to rehash old soundtracks for nostalgia's sake. The OST we were given was perfect. It gave us something new while still sounding like a Star Wars soundtrack.
Maybe this is because I didn't grow up as a Star Wars fan (I only got into it recently, around the last couple years) that I think this way. I love the Prequel Trilogy OST, but I would rather get quality original music like we got in the 1x06 fight.
Also as a side note and probably a very controversial opinion, Duel of the Fates in particular (Not Battle of the Heroes which I love) is overrated as hell.

Them tossing Reva's backstory in up-front like they did in the series was frankly one of the biggest criticisms I had. There's just no mystery or nuance to it, just 'this is exactly what happened to this character to make her a bad guy'. The way it was cut in later makes the twist feel so much more earned and interesting. Any good villain needs intrigue.

I was talking to my brother the other day about this, and I think the final fight between Kanobi and Vader should have been on Ilum! Think about it, first and of all it's the perfect mirror setting to their last battle. Before Anakin was filled with fire and rage, and now he's filled with cold detachment. There could have been some amazing wide shots of the two fighting over ice ridges, and it would be the first proper fight to take place in a cave which is something new. I could also tie in with all the shots they did in Kanobi with Vader burying him and then having all the rocks flung at Vader. Not to mention that we know they were already working on Star Killer base in the near future!

I’ve seen the Patterson cut and recently the Pentex cut, and while I prefer both of these cuts VASTLY over the series, the pentex cut is far superior from an economic story telling perspective. Scenes were moved around to make sense and the entire sub-plot of Leia getting captured again (the entire 4th episode) was cut out. Plus the music was almost completely reworked to add more Of that John Williams spirit. It’s a lean 2 hour cut and makes way more storytelling sense and cuts out the things that bother you (and me).

Cool video! Adding the duel of the fates theme doesn't sit right with me because Duel of the Fates was a duel that changed everything in Star Wars on a story level. Whereas this duel between Obi-Wan and Vader is somewhat pointless and unimportant on a plot and character level. Duel of the fates would be too dramatic. Battle of the heroes would work well for me in that scene tho.
I wonder what a noir/black and white version of Kenobi would be like. The series doesn't really use colour in a very emotional way so I think putting it in black and white, you wouldn't lose much storytelling (tho you'd have to edit the contrast levels so you could still see what was going on) and it would give the series a bit more visual charm like it's a lost, shaky, old Documentary that has been recovered and slots between ROTS and ANH.

Agree with your take on the music. Duel of the Fates just does not fit there and the small snippets he shows confirm that to me. This is way to personal and tragic for that kind of theme.
Also, I personally love the music that plays during Vader's and Kenobi's final conversation. It is not a memorable melody per se but it really hits all the feelings without being a piece I already know. It does not even necessarily feel Star Wars and still works!

@@liamphill2873 yes I like what they did with the music! That was exactly what I said about the music. Plot significance aside, the tone is wrong. That's the Kenobi versus Maul theme, and we already have an even better Anakin vs Kenobi theme. If it were up to me, I would have cut Reva out entirely lol. But as technology (CGI, deep-faking, de-aging) gets better, I wish some live-action CW flashbacks could be added in...because isn't that what the essence of the series was supposed to be? The relationship between Obi-wan and Anakin? And I also thought Obi-wan failing to mention Padme in that last fight was a missed opportunity.
And Qui-gon...they were teasing his appearance (voice or otherwise) so hard and he didn't show up until the very end. If even his voice had been present to give Kenobi the motivation to face Vader once more after getting wrecked in episode 3, it would have made the transition between the guy who was barely able to hold his saber to the Jedi master that was pummeling Vader that much more seamless.

Pentex Productions also made a good edit. He makes quite a few interesting creative choices during the climax which I found improved the final fight. Also The Matrix Revolutions Decoded by Jarick is a fantastic fan edit and one of my favourites. It streamlines both Matrix sequels into one narrative and it works really well. The ending is slightly rushed but overall it's an excellent viewing experience. So many subplots are trimmed or removed. Characters now live and die based on the changes in this edit and it's like watching these movies for the first time again. It's all the interesting philosophy, barely any exposition, all the great action, sci fi concepts and spectacle and none of the guff. Except the cake scene is still in there. Make of that what you will. Only real flaw is that the Merovingian isn't as deep as he is in the theatrical cut, and is more of an "Odyssey"-esque harbinger character as a pitstop along the journey. This edit pays homage a lot to monomythic storytelling like the first movie but really leans into it this time around.

I definitely think the pacing/padding was the biggest issue with the show's watchability. But ever since your previous video on the show, I can't get the possibilities with Qui-Gon out of my head. His thoughts on Anakin's fall, how that affects Obi-Wan's interactions with him, the conversations they could've had, etc. There's still a lot of missed potential that remains unexplored that can't be fixed with trimming+music alone.
"Less plot, more character" sums it up, I think - not that we don't get some of that, but...yeah, could've been more. It is titled "Obi-Wan Kenobi", after all.
Off topic, but since you brought it up, they *did* use the Raimi theme in No Way Home: when Sandman is cured, and when Otto sees Tobey again. We also hear TASM1's theme when Andrew talks to Max. Not sure if I'm missing any other examples.
While I'm more positively inclined on the film overall, I agree it could've done with _more_ of that music. We get a great rendition of the MCU Spidey theme when they're all swinging together (and in general Tom's theme is used well in this film, IMO), but no real "action-y" uses of the other two Spideys. Definitely would've made the final fight better, IMO - especially hearing bits of their respective themes in sequence, if that could be made to work. Personally, I think it could've done with some small musical cues when they first appeared, as well.

I think the show would've worked better if it spread out the structure of a movie over 6 episodes to give it more breathing room. here's what I mean.
episodes 1-2 - equivalent to the first act.
episodes 3-4 - equivalent to the second act.
episodes 5-6 - equivalent to the third act.

Look; duel of the fates is awesome. My second favorite John Williams tune ever in fact... but it was written for a specific scene with a specific theme running through it, hence the name. So it doesn't serve much to a scene 30 years later when anakin's fate has very much been decided. That said, I would absolutely have gone with Battle of the Heroes again for the finale duel in the show and leave duel of the fates as it's own singular piece

Overall, I think that you did a really good job! The editing is really good, but I feel like some scenes could have been a little bit longer. And some transitions were a bit odd. But it is still really good. The way you edited the ending fight between Darth Vader and Obi-wan was amazing. It really brought more emotion to the story. But I did notice you left the scene where Obi-Wan used the force to lift rocks and hit Darth Vader with them. I really wish that this could be in theaters. It would be a fun experience.

There's another cut, a bit shorter, made by Pentex Production (TH-cam channel). I haven't seen the one described here yet, but the Pentex cut was pretty good and far more enjoyable than the series. Notably, it completly cuts out episode 4, and that change alone suggests to me that it is even better. He also deaged Hayden Christensen in his scene with Obi-Wan, and rescored the final fight with Duel of the Fates as well. He also had it to begin with the Inquisitors scene, with just a shot of Tatoine from Episode I before, so that the movie starts in space like all the others. Overall a pretty solid work, I am curious to see if Patterson did it better.

I also made my own version of the film cut. I basically made it so Reva died after fighting Vader. I shortened Leia's kidnapping. I didnt change the music, it's fine. Lola is taken from Leia in episode 2. Episode 4 practically does not exist. A lot of scenes are shortened and some fights have been re-edited so that kenobi's blaster accuracy isn't nearly as awful. Leia is only caught and rescued once.

Yeah I do feel like the Kenobi show would have worked better as a movie, this also reminds me of a another recent mediocre SW show that would have been much better with a reordering of scenes and general edits.
I feel like Book of Boba Fett would have been way better if the flashback bits were just made into Boba's story beginning and the parts that were just episodes of The Mandalorian actually be the "cut away" part, culminating in the big fight at the end where they cooperate.

I re-edited Kai Patterson's edit down from 2.5hrs to a 1hr23mins film. Watch on the link below.
    tinyurl.com/kmv6vtxr
The first 20ish mins are the same and all Kai's work, then it all changes and doesn't slow down. I removed basically all the Leia scenes and there is now only 1 rescue sequence. The final fight is also all Kai's editing.
All the credits remain same, with one addition 😉
Like Kai's cut, this cut is for Disney+ subscribers only. The Dropbox preview link will only show you the first 1hr. To view the full 1hr23mins, watch it using the Dropbox app or just download the video. (It's 11gb tho).

  • @IndySidhu88

The first half of the cut is a little ham-fisted, it was cut to more plot-to-plot linearly however it's missing SW transitions which are needed and some of the old OG soundtrack appears in the first half in order to make it more 'SW' which is fine but it's a little thrown into the mix or done for nostalgia. The opening focuses on Obi-wan most which is good and reduces the Inquisitor Jedi-hunt in the beginning to something more simpler. Less running back and forth with that particular Jedi extra character.
While I love the Duel of the Fates track I think for this show which it shouldn't try to be so much like the Prequels or Originals but it's own entity, I preferred the soundtrack Natalie Holt did for the show and for the final fight as it felt more emotional with hers. It's also funny how much better Reva comes off in The Patterson Cut; I liked her, but her character motivations and pacing was a little erratic in the Episodic telling. In The Patterson Cut it's much more refined, better drops of history and flashbacks intermittently at the right moments which don't show off too much and give to little. Allows her character backstory to grown in your own mind. Patterson was right about the filler in the show used a lot in the show in order to give it more time.

I really liked the Paterson edit and its honestly baffling how he was able to incorporate nearly every arc from the series into his edit. However I did feel a bit rushed in certain scenes for time and needed more room to breathe.
This would drastically rearange the story beats, but frankly we shouldnt have Leia get kidnapped twice in one movie, instead have it happen once and cut the Fortress Inquisitorius scenes. The location was really cool to see, but bogs down the story a bit much. Cutting that would allow some scenes to play out longer and help the pacing. After Kenobi is burned and in the bacta, immediately have vader on his way to jabim and let Patterson's edit play out as it did from there.
Again he did an amazing job and his work in editing and adding additional scenes is remarkable. He did a fantastic job keeping nearly all the beats. If someone didnt watch kenobi, Patersons edit would get them right up to speed and in a delightful manner.

I just finished this cut and, while it's overall a very neat version, the pacing is atrocious in many moments throughout.
There are a number of scenes that are cut into various sequences that, while not a bad idea to string them together, is done in a way that feels reminiscent of a recap montage.
Before starting it, I wondered about showing this to a friend who had not seen the show yet, to get their fresh perspective on it. But... about halfway through I was already convinced that anybody who had not seen this before would easily notice how jarring and frenetic some of it is. Maybe for some who have already sat through this dull, plodding, focus group tested, prime example of "I'm here for the wildly large paycheck" of a show, this may be a better experience.
But it's, like many a fan-edit, amateurish throughout, ultimately novel and worth watching MAYBE only once.

    • @ilikemovies22

I also agree. I’ve been watching for a bit, and a lot of of why the editing feels off is there’s few moments where scenes breathe or characters pause. I understand why a lot was removed for the sake of time, as those pauses tend to add up, but they’re pretty crucial to making it all flow well. However, the rescore for a lot of it is super well done. I want a combination of the Patterson and Pentex cut ASAP

I'm not familiar with the Patterson cut but I do know that it includes the side quest to The Inquisitor fortress which was completely unnecessary to the story. The other that I am thoroughly impressed with was done by Pentex and I couldn't recommend it more. My friend's son watched it and didn't even realize that 2 hours had been cut out of the series. It actually focuses on Obi-Wan eliminates a lot of Reva's participation, it's just a far far better version than what we got. Still somewhat polishing a turd but at least it's watchable.

Two things about the edit I didn't like:.
    - While I agree that most of the music in Obi-Wan was very subpar, I count the final battle music to be an exceotion. If was great and I think I preferred it. I mean Dual of The Fates will always be the GOAT but the new theme was great and fitting.
    - He edited out Reeva mentioning Anakin by name the first time she met Obi-Wan, thus creating a plot hole when Obi-Wan uses this info to guess she was a former temple youngling and try to make a deal to cooperate. This cut was unnecessary and could be kept it without changing anything.
But other than these two issues, I found it to be a great cut overall and editing work. Massive props to the guy.

So I finally watch the Patterson cut with high expectations after all the hype around it on the SW community and I have some thoughts:
Not gonna deny the movie format is better, suits better for the story itself and I’m really… really glad with what he made with Reva, all that Leia chase and how Obi Wan is the main character.
That being said, this cut also has a quite bad pacing with the scenes. There are many times where it just rushes, giving you between 6-7 cuts from different shots in seconds (and I’m not talking of the flashbacks). There are moments where I prefer the series pacing because it lets breath the shots, doesn’t try to rush it.
With this comes another problem and personally is a big one: Continuity. For example when Vader arrives to Yavin he talks with Reva, leave her at the door, goes straight to the hangar and stops the ship with the force. But after that, Reva just appears behind him, while in the series you have the end of the training shot, then a Vader looking up, and then Reva appears, giving you time for her to get behind him.
Finally I do believe Patterson is a fan, who made possible what many fans wanted with the “fan service” using dialogue from previous movies, but mostly it feels like the movie is throwing you info in your face just because “it has to be there” when most of the times it’s not necessary, yes, it’s fan service, but it’s not always good to have it.
Overall I think is a good movie for someone who hasn’t seen the series, works with what it has and fixes many… Many problems it had, but at moments it can feel rushed for what I said before, maybe to get in the 2:30 time stamp.

One can appreciate the screenplay or not, that’s personal taste. But the real, painfully obvious problem of the series is that the direction is amateurish at best. I can’t wait to see this version, an average editor can only make all of this better

He obviously gets some really important details that for some reason the millennials just don’t understand like music scores.
That was such an integral part of Star Wars and what made it so good.
Unfortunately the base material was so bad it was really like putting a band aid on a gaping hole in your gut.
The storyline and even the shoots were just so bad and awkwardly done that no amount of splicing and editing was going to fix this train wreck but it’s definitely worth a watch and I recommend you listen to his comments about why he did it as he explains just some basic things that aren’t there in Disney Star Wars shows that just don’t feel the same and are so underwhelming compared to the originals.
