Few areas of the new car market are more fiercely fought for than the executive car class - as you'll find out in this video review. We test two cars - the BMW 520D and the Mercedes E220.
Mercedes has only recently revised the E-Class, after just four years, telling of how competitive things are in this class. Meanwhile, BMW has just pulled the wraps of its 5 Series, too.
From the outside, the new BMW 5 Series looks pretty similar to the old version, but those with a keen eye will notice tweaked headlamps and re-profiled bumpers. It gets a 520-litre boot, but this is 20 litres less than what the Mercedes has to offer. Plus, you have to pay an extra £420 for a split fold rear seat.
Mercedes has taken a bolder approach in its facelift of the E-Class - bringing you redesigned flanks, bold LED headlamps and a completely new grille. Still, it looks a little boring alongside the sporty 5 Series, and it's a similar story inside. But, it does get a roomier 540-litre boot.
The Mercedes provides a sensible drive - the standard adaptive dampers give a really soft ride and the steering is direct and well-weighted. But, it's just not that fun.
BMW, on the other hand, has a reputation for building fun-to-drive cars, and this latest 5 Series is no exception. It manages corners with excellence, has beautifully balanced rear-wheel-drive handling and direct steering that's very well-weighted.
Both the BMW and the Mercedes cost around £32,000, while the Mercedes emits 120g/km of CO2 and the BMW, 119g/km. Ultimately, both are going to be chosen as company cars, but which one do you go for? The Mercedes is very comfortable and quiet, but the BMW is equally desirable and better to drive. Watch the video review and see what you think.
I dont consider BMW 5 series is classy. The E-Class is classy. However, both of them are great cars. It's just the matter of preferences.
The BMW interior is nicer. Sit in one! That shiny mercedes interior gets tired; it's tacky
This guy is a BMW man. The way he talks. Not suggesting he is biased, but that people normally have a preference. We are not 16 any more, and talking about speed and cornering is for kids playing top trumps not grown ups. I much prefer the soft ride of the Mercedes, its more refined, and its more relaxing to drive. I also get much better service at Merc dealers, than I do at BWW dealers (and despite what matey says, Merc is cheaper to service and run than BMW, its not called Bring Money With you for nothing). Both good cars, but neither is "better" its down to personal preference on ride quality. Personally, I prefer the more relaxing softer ride of the Merc.

Yes, I am a Merc man, and Johnny Liebermann has said that the E-class is better than the 5-series. And btw I have driven the E-class and while it isn't the sportiest car in the world, it is super nice to drive :)
I took an E220 for a testdrive down at my local Merc dealer, because I like the car..

That's review is FAIL. No one can really prove that bmw is better, because it was/is not and is never going to be. Merc
You can't compare the E-class and 5-series with pros and cons, since the main reason behind every choice is down to the brand.. For me the E-class is just about as perfect as a car can be, and no matter how many numbers you show me I can't be convinced to buy the BMW. And I bet all you BMW boys are sitting with exactly the same feelings..

toxik217 I never said I wasn't a Merc fan.. I'm just saying that whatever facts you slam on the table, you can't change the mind of either fan.. And in the styling department again, that is a personal preference, I personally love the way the E-class looks, and at the same time think that the 5 series looks like a nissan primera..
Lasse Nielsen So u basically think the E class looks better than a S class ( C class looks like an S class hence what i said ) And well even if a 5 series would be similar to a Nissan it would be the other way around ... But I don't see any resemblance, it looks like a modernized e39. But obviously I am wasting my time writing back to a fanboy rather than a car guy, so i don't care really care. You probably don't even drive one of these brands to have a clue in the first place (and even if you would than only bought it for the brand/image not for the actual specs )...
The F10 5-series is not actually as good as these BMW fanboy car-reviewers make you think. What they don´t tell you that the 5-Series is horrible in town driving compared to the new E-Class, and is not as good on motorways. Also BMW reliability is crap compared to its rivals, for example on the 525d, the DPF is programmed in to the system to fail at around 250000 km and is not included into warranty. Also the timing chain tensioner will fail at those kilometers witch will cause the timing chain to fail witch will cause the whole engine to fail. The start/stop system shakes the car like hell and if the engine starts while still stationary, the automatic transmission almost always goes into park, unlike in a Mercedes. My experience of these cars are from taxi use witch I think really shows what a car is made off. If you buy a E60/61 - F10-F11, you´re just buying yourself a headache.

both are just as nice, I would personally go for the sedan becouse I use the backseat almost on a daily basis. coupe looks nicer though.

Why are these cars being tested on the track? I wonder how many people will track their 520D or E220.. And as far as the interior, I feel like E class has higher quality materials after driving both.
e class interior are rubbish from china man see all the documentary on e class. they are so simple and have old fashion instrument cluster now compare to the 5 series

vote for BMW for sure. same feeling in all series that's why it's call series. the bigger series j have its bigger confidence. personally I drive 550i. it's aggressive fast brutal executive and for sure very first safety. highly highly recommend for all drivers.

Too much people who don't know shit react here. For me it's pretty simple, my dad just received his new E220, I'll be recieving my new 520 (company car) in jan 2015. I'll be able to do some REAL comparision. I drove the E class a full day, amazing! I drove the 520D half a day, amazing! Choosen the 520 because it gave me a youth feeling. The BMW garage is 100% sure that I'll like the 520 more. The Benz garage that I'll like the E class more. I think it will be a close call... :-)

I would definitely choose the Mercedes.
I used to prefer the BMW over most other executive class cars. But when the W212 came it I feel the Merc became class leader in all categories. It's just so good looking and luxurious it blows all cars in it's categorie away, at least from my point of view. The one thing it lacks is a high power diesel engine like the one that's in the M550d. It would be perfect with that.

As soon as you have to do any serious milage (20k+ a year) you will regret choosing bmw. The so called "sportier" feel will make you curse the day you went for one. Go for merc, your back will thank you.

BMW has the better driving performance, hands down. The only thing I hate about the BMW is it's interior. I've always felt like it was 10-years older.

Recently traded in my E250 cdi sport saloon for a 520d m sport saloon and I must say, BMW is a far better car in cabin styling & comfort. It was deafening travelling in the Merc on the motorway whilst road noise in the Beema is not as bad. I've always preferred BMW & owned the Beema E46 and E39 over the years & opted for a Merc as Beema were experiencing the horrendous timing chain issue but the model I've just bought is the revised engine so fingers crossed
The seats in the Merc were shockingly stiff & hard as well, made worse by the cheap plasticky leather
And between the two I would choose....Audi A6.

The big 3 German cars are all top cars, and I like them all. However, do your research and not just be a fanboy, because the 5 series is number 1 for a reason. If you compare horsepower, fuel efficiency, Media package (Mercedes E class has the worst of the big 3, tiny screen too), technology etc, BMW is leading overall, and are more fun to drive. BMW handles best, but at the cost of feeling every bump in the road, and would have to pay extra for damper control to eliminate that. Some ignorant smOOthie brain person commented on BMW being cheap and plastic... BMW use some of the most expensive materials in their cars ( with the exception of some budget 1 series). The A6 is also fun to drive, and has the advantage of 4 wheel drive...
Amgbenz0 The high end E class meaning the AMG? I was debating on whether I should get an E class or a 5 series. I like the exterior of the E class but don't like the interior. And the opposite for the 5 series.

The mercedes looks a lot nicer inside and out and has a better steering feel it was a 2011 so maybe that's why because it didnt have electric steering which I HATE electric steering, I drove the e550 with amg performance pack it was the coupe but still and the steering was heavy and beautifully sorted with a nicer center feel as well, the bmw had better brake feel and was more sensitive but I felt like if I needed to stop both cars with my life on the line I think the Benz is stopping sooner, unlike the F10 550i which had loose steering and the car felt very long and taller than the Mercedes, not only that but the 5 series looks exactly like the 3 series outside but more specifically inside the cabin the Benz just feels nicer to touch and be in, If you haven't give both of them a fair shot and see what you think, in my opinion though an audi s6 is better than both of these cars and if you think about it they are actually all direct competition with each other as all have v8 twin turbos and all of them are like half way to being a full blown Rs6 or e63 or m5 but the audi s6 is faster than both and is still retaining its resale value MUCH better.

this guy did not cover the best things of the e class, e.g the rear seats, the ride and much more. The drive actually is great and you get decent economy from the e350d which is fast aswell. The merc is definitely better and I'm not being biased here

I've read many reviews and watched many videos (even from Carbuyer/Autoexpress) and everybody says the manual in the BMW and Mercedes is rubbish, but is like a normal car on the Audi. So why does it say here that the BMW is the only executive car that us alright with a manual?
