This is the realest video ever put on TH-cam! A serious wake-up call.
In the past couple of months I’ve accepted that I’ve been parasocial for years now, primarily due to loneliness (as you mention). But I’ve also found *acceptance* in it, and now I see them solely as “entertainers” rather than friends. As though I’m reading a book, or a TV show. I still watch and keep up because it’s nice to feel like there’s people around to listen to. So on days like today actually, where it’s my birthday, and two of my close friends rejected to hang out with me because they wanted to be with their girlfriends instead - i’ll just chill and watch youtube instead, cause it feels like there’s “people around” (metaphorically) and I don’t feel like I’m swallowed by the silent walls of my apartment. This is a small example of many. Similarly to what you mentioned in the video, this is my “escape”, and honestly it keeps me from going crazy.
As for the topic of greatness: I’m very successful in my career, I’m very proud of that. Pulled myself out of homelessness 4 years ago (from foster abandonment) and climbed up by myself to upper-middle class status. I get super high praise from my co-workers & bosses for my efforts. A ton. And I still want to improve even more so. My only issue currently is over-working myself 15+ hours on average, and working on weekends, all to-once again-avoid the feeling of loneliness in my personal life outside of work.
I agree with everything you say here, but unfortunately, I have no solution. I’ve found complacency in the relief and (ironically) the sanity these parasocial feelings give me. I’ve succeeded in my career and grown in that aspect, but these days I’ve been in a hole where I don’t know where I belong... and everyone I know keeps leaving or fading away. It’s a heavy feeling of solitude.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve made effort to get rid of the “obsessive” aspects of parasocialism, like I know my “comfort streamer” does NOT know I exist and does NOT care about me.... but man, it’s soothing to hear his voice and hear him ramble about random shit. Cringe and weird to admit but it’s so attractive. And I 100% know that’s insane of me to think. But i don’t know where else to look.

Bro i love your message , watching this video was such a wake up call esp when he says "they're friends with other creators who followed their dreams" made me realize the reality that content creators probably would not condone the actions of their fans or at least mega fans. Reading your comment made me realize that i don't have abandon these people that i enjoy watching, rather stop obsessing over their lives and when i don't even have mine under control. That i can still enjoy their content and message with intention than mindlessly consume and distract. I hope both you and myself can slowly solve our loneliness while maintaining a healthy relationship with our entertainment ( aka streamers TH-camrs etc). Happy Birthday bro

While watching, I was having a debate with myself inside my mind. I kept scoffing and thinking, "That's not true. I watch TH-camrs for their entertainment. I don't need or want to be friends with these people." But, then I looked a bit deeper and realized that maybe it was true at one stage or another? I used to have dreams about being friends with some of my favourite content creators, meeting and collaborating with those who inspired me when I was younger (in some cases, I actually did become friends with these people, but that's beside the point).
I think everyone is parasocially driven whether they realise it or not. Nobody is above it. It just works on people to varying degrees, like advertising. People can say that advertising doesn't work on them, but they're not really being honest with themselves.

I feel like their is this new wave to youtube in all niches, from vloging, to education to gardening. It all starts with the small channels, who care much less about monitization and moire about telling stories, creating a building new ideas. This is the youtube I want, where young creators ( 14 - 22 ) are creating freely, explaining concepts but having this focus on the more personal aspect of their lives . ( I apologize for all the typos, I am using a rasberry pi that dosn't allow for spell check :/ )

I needed this, I feel lost as an 18yr female, im para social through irl and online, I forget I have my own life because I fear things, my anxiety demotivates me and I try everything to get rid of it to pursue what would make me happy. I'm literally medicated, journaling, exercising, and I still feel empty watching people live what I want. I feel at the bottom of the barrel, like life is already over for me despite what I do because everything I do hardly matters lol, it doesn't feel like hard times anymore, it just feels like I'm not going anywhere anymore. All I want is friends at this point, a relationship doesn't heal me the way a regular friend human connection could, I didn't comment just to whine though. I'm hoping for better days, I know I didn't give up but I'm just scared I guess, I hate being vulnerable on TH-cam but I don't know where else to exercise my vulnerability.

Curious here, do you believe parasocial as a whole is a bad thing for online social connection?
Sometimes people lose themselves in a creator and their lives. They become addicted to their content and their drama and if unchecked they can neglect themselves, their dreams, and goals. These are the people I want to wake up and inspire. People need to be a fan of themselves first.
@@danny50_50 just asking if the impression of parasocial to you is seen as a negative in its entirety, as that is what I got from the video.
I completely understand some people take it way too far and in turn it becomes a negative or worse. Thankfully it’s few and far between and the majority of people do not take it that far. So I do agree, those people would need therapy to get that checked as it’s most likely from an unchecked illness they have
(We just tend to see those cases more often on social media because it’s loud and brings in our attention for the dramatic aspect of it. same can be said for bad news on anything)
I do tend to see parasocial connections as a positive for the world.
Some fictional characters and streamers or influencers or celebrities do have a lasting impact on some peoples world views and lives and it can bring about change for that person for the better.

How can people be a fan of themselves if they first don’t have any love or respect for themselves?
Many of those that do seek a parasocial relationship in the negative aspect, need that love and emotional connection first from the people around them, and if they don’t get that in their lives when growing up, they do seek it out in unconventional ways online.
Not saying this is correct or reasonable for them to do; but the message for these people will not be taken to heart because they don’t have self love for themselves first and foremost.

And definitely is when people turn it overly obsessive in their lives that they don’t put their real relationships over them. So yeah, it can be a negative but I don’t see all parasocial relationships like this at all. That’s a small minority.
I see the points made here from you and Danny; I’m just making a different perspective of this issue if you are willing to understand how I view it.
I don’t believe all parasocial connections are a negative for people.
What about the connections people form with characters, actors, and celebrities that better themselves because of them, and this is how I personally see it.
But it’s okay to stick with your views on this issue.
I just think the word used here is being overly seen and used in the negative sense when it used to be not be that way in it’s true beginnings. Thanks for reading.
