Next week: Why I sold my Weelden Royal Overdrive 😂😂😂 I like so much how this guy takes this so seriously and changed his mind the next day. This is sooo funny!!!
It is one of those very rare overdrive pedals which isn't just a modified already existing circuit. Peter designed this from scratch. A totaly unique circuit with more that 400 parts! Owned one, sold it, regret that i sold it... It realy is a gem! Only downside is its size.
No, it is not. I owned one myself (still regret i sold it) and talked to Peter van Weelden about this. He told me it is not designed to fuction as a preamp. It realy is een overdrive pedal which needs a preamp to function properly. You could use it somewhat as a preamp, he said, but to get a descent sound you would have to turn the eq knobs all the way up and then you would just one sound and nowhere to go from there.
Love your improv John. Always inspiring. I’ve got a few Dumble-in-a-box pedals, the Dude, Lovepedal Zendrive white mojo, MXR Shin-Juku Drive, Dumbloid, and the VWRO. I completely agree that the VWRO is top of the heap. One interesting alternative is the Dumbloid. It has more aggressive tones that need to be tamed somewhat, but one thing it absolutely has is that organic responsiveness. I use it for a medium gain channel that can clean up with picking dynamics. Can’t beat the RO for lead tones tho.
I took a screenshot of your settings...I have to say..I've had mine for a few years now..I thought I had tweaked it to get the best tone through my Deluxe reverb reissue until I looked at your settings..the critical thing I think...that mid switch on and gain fairly low about 8 o'clock...beautiful transparent type overdrive..with my strat..PRS and es 335..they all sound awesome, still love my Ethos and Wampler Euphoria..but now I love this magical unit even more.
I can totally agree with you. I have used my Royal overdrive in my wet/dry rig for years and it’s the best Dumble pedal I have tried. And I have tried a lot of them. My main amp is a Carol Ann OD2 which is dry and the wet amp is a DV Mark Raw Dawg with the Royal OD in front. Man, that’s a religious experience. I will never sell this pedal.
I’m not happy with myself for selling my backup pedal. One of my Klon’s died so luckily I have my first one. But like my Klon, I have no idea if my Royal O.D. Has a due date.
Totally agree with you John. There a fantastic pedal I have one myself thank Jesus, the price can only rise. But apart from that it’s my favourite drive pedal, sorry king of tone there’s a new royal in town lol 😂👑
The Ethos is about the closest thing I can think of, but I don't feel like it's as different to some other things I've tried as the Royal Overdrive. But in the mix I reckon it could definitely be just as useful?
You must be able to hear the magic in person and feel the dynamics while playing because it sounds just like any generic low-medium gain overdrive to my ears over youtube
Yes, you must play it to feel what it does. It realy is something special. And with the right settings you also can get a pretty heavy overdrive sound out of it.
I hadn't heard of Peace Hill till you mentioned - look like very well made pieces of kit, as well as actually still being available? The Kingsley stuff is probably in a similar vein too?

It's definitely more of an actual preamp in a stomp enclosure than it is a simple OD circuit. Sounds so good.

That really is some of the best LP tone you’ve yet had on the channel.

Yeah, that pedal is a keeper. Some very usable tones in there.
Wow … gorgeous top on that Les Paul. 😳
Nice tones too.
Update....... I just sold this pedal. 😅
Such a great sound!
This kills all your modelers!
Hey John, I also own a VWRO. It’s too big, too heavy, too expensive and too hard to dial in… But it’s also my favorite pedal in the world ! Rock on !
Ill buy it😅 you'll have room for 3 other pedals
I wish I could compare the Royal Overdrive to the new Ethos Clean Fusion Deluxe
Sounds awesome
I’m not happy with myself for selling my backup pedal. One of my Klon’s died so luckily I have my first one. But like my Klon, I have no idea if my Royal O.D. Has a due date.
Sounds amazing to me!
Sounds very much like an amp channel. Expensive sounding 🫰👍
Hard enuff ta get that sound w/tube circuits...., to get it w/JFETS is INSANE, i should know ive been tweaking Dumble circuits since 1999...
Sounds real nice
I take it this is going into one of your Amps, and mic'ed to interface? Sounds nice.
Should try the free the tone overdriveland custom. It’s pretty great
Yea thats a keeper if i ever seen one

Banger 💥💥💥
Never heard a pedal sound better than an amp. Used ceriatone
Can you please make a Dumble OD shootout? Thx.
There is something organic about your tone when you use this.
I did find myself kind of just enjoying how it responded to light picking and stuff?
I say things like that about my Ethos OD, but it doesn’t sound as good as this one
Any guess on how your Ethos OD compares to the new Ethos Clean Fusion Deluxe?
The Ethos is about the closest thing I can think of, but I don't feel like it's as different to some other things I've tried as the Royal Overdrive. But in the mix I reckon it could definitely be just as useful?
Any possbility for a close preset in Helix? Thanks

You say this because you never used the peace hill fx ODS or SSS
Fwiw, I had a SSS and for me, the Royal Overdrive or Ethos pedals are a significant step up.
I hadn't heard of Peace Hill till you mentioned - look like very well made pieces of kit, as well as actually still being available?

I read this as 'the pedal i can't spell
