  • Nothing flashy here, just a few examples of practical/naturalistic designs in MetaSounds.

I absolutely love all the explanation! Thanks for the walkthrough Dan!

these videos have been insanely helpful as a tech artist with no audio engineering experience. bless u !

Thanks Dan. This was helpful. It will be great when there is more detailed docs also about how to use all the parts of MetaSound. It was helpful to see how you used the trigger delay and trigger repeats as they aren't intuitive to use. And look forward to more videos showing maybe more creative and advanced practical uses. There are so many features in MetaSounds of nodes that can be used that it seems like the possibilities are almost endless... but also a little overwhelming since it's not always obvious. Really appreciate this.

Hey Joey! For sure! It can all seem intimidating and it IS important to treat MetaSounds like something brand new, because they are. Additionally, even the graph flow is new. However, I think once you start using a few of the nodes, you'll find it easier and easier to explore and discover and just try things out.
My hope is that the community catches on and we'll just se more and more MetaSound creativity!
Until we're able to develop more learning resources, the best way to learn MetaSounds is through exploration and discovery. I think people comfortable with modular synthesis, PD, Max, Reaktor, etc. will have the easiest time breaking into MetaSounds, but even for them, it will be a process of trying things out and discovering how nodes work.

Great video! So well said; We're in 4.26 still and I do a lot in my DAW (cuz I genuinely enjoy it), but I'll definitely be trying out MetaSound in the near future.

This isn't a tool that is trying to compete with your DAW -- none of Dan's practical demos are things you can do in your DAW even in 4.26. Randomized, procedural control and variation of sounds is something that you can't do in your DAW. All of the assets he used were made and exported from DAWs. Again: *the goal is not to replace your DAW*. DAWs are a sound design tool to create static assets. Game engines are sound design tools for interaction, data-driven and procedural variation. The analog is exactly like a shader/material vs textures. As an artist you still use textures as assets that you import into your shaders, which procedurally filter and modify the textures for a variety of applications. I can imagine in the future, as audio matures as a discipline, we might see a split of focus in audio gigs -- imagine a split between a "wav artist" and somebody who builds MetaSounds (e.g. tech artist) analogous to a "texture artist" and somebody who would use those textures for in-game procedural assets.

@@minuskelvin sorry for the misunderstanding; I never meant it in the way that I wouldn’t be using my DAW or replacing my DAW; I simply mean that I’m going to be using MetaSound more to create variety and explore implementation.

I want to try some thing like a old hard to find DS game called Electroplankton. There was one game mode with tadpoles and you make them bounce on leaves to make a tune. but try it with a bigger tree and maybe grass under makes sounds as well.

I can't find this Soundscape demo, could someone please point me to the right direction? Please note that sometimes TH-cam hides comments with links, making them only visible for the author.

Okay, I figured that out. It is not the engine plugin, so the latest version could be obtained from the City Sample demo, the older (initial) version - from the Valley of the Ancient demo.

@@alexanderalikin1210 Soundscape will be an Engine plugin as of UE5.1, but there won't be many updates or changes from the City Sample version.
