Vespa Campout

  • My first time taking the Vespa GTS moto-camping. I opt for a S24O (sub-24 hour overnighter) minimalist campout, with all of my camping gear stashed under the seat, and one shopping bag of extra goodies. The campground is Lower Narrows Campground on Colorado 14 and the Cache la Poudre river, in the Arapaho & Roosevelt National Forests area, 30 miles from Fort Collins.
    Lower Narrows Campground:
    www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/arp/r...
    Lower Narrows Campground Reservations:
    www.recreation.gov/camping/ca...
    The bike is a 2022 Vespa GTS 300 HPE in "arancio impulsivo" (impulsive orange).
    Theme music provided by Mother Nature. ;-)
    Chapters:
    0:00 Intro and ride there
    4:40 Arriving at Campground
    6:28 Unpacking and showing gear
    8:56 Setting up camp
    9:06 Exploring and swimming
    12:09 Dinner, relaxing, reading
    14:00 Sunset and night sky
    15:01 Morning
    16:52 Packing up
    17:05 Ride home and thoughts

    What a wonderful camp out, and a wonderful video to watch. It makes me wanna pull my camping gear out and go.
    There’s 24 hour sojourns or fantastic. And like you say, they are like a mini vacation. I’ve done similar things on my GTS. But it’s been a long time. Maybe it’s time to go again.
    Your new Vespa is much quieter than mine. I think my belt and clutch is getting a little worn. And your engine sounds quieter too.
    Thanks for taking the time to make the video. I know how much work it is. and I bet you inspire a lot of people to get out and go on a camp out.

      Thank you. Sometimes it is good to just get away and slow down, even if only for a little while. Not having an Internet connection for 24 hours is like a detox too!
      My Vespa is Euro 5 compliant which I think sets a limit of 80db. I seem to remember that it has more sound damping insulation than previous years, but I’m not sure. It is very quiet, no doubt about that. If loud pipes save lives, I’m a dead man! 😂

    Vespa campout! Great watch and what fantastic quiet roads to exploit the HPE 300! It has given me ideas, I camp and fish alot but with alot of kit. I need to kit myself out with a bivvy tent for next summer and follow your lead and head to the hills on my Vespa. There's a great tradition of people setting out on their Vespa or Lambretta's and exploring. I was recently made aware of two girls from the U.K. that went around the world on a Lambretta in the 1960's. Keep on scootering especially now considering price of petrol we are having to pay in rip off Britain now.

    What beautiful roads you have in your ‘backyard.’ It’s definitely not as curvy where I live yet some pretty scenery just the same. I think my Vespa is the same year as yours or maybe one year older (2021 300 HPE) yet mine is the matte blue supersport-all the colours are fantastic and your orange Vespa looks really sharp. Scooterinthesticks has been my favourite Vespa channel on here and today I added you to that list. Your videos are very enjoyable, with just the right amount of information mixed with quiet and riding. Thank you! I used to ride a motorbike yet the Vespa has taken its place. Really enjoying this video! Especially since I've wanted a Vespa since I returned to riding in 2002, but have yet to purchase one. I do enjoy riding my PCX 150, Burgman 650 and Victory sidecar rig...but, thinking the Vespa 300 would suit me better than the heavy weight Burgman. I also appreciate that you chose a minimalistic approach to camping, as I've been working out a camping kit that would allow me enough comforts for a multi day camping trip on my PCX 150...or, the KLR 650 which at the moment needs some service to get back on the road. You're blessed with a beautiful area to ride! Thanks for sharing!🛵🛵🛵

      @@flatgrindrides The KLR has waterproof Nelson Riggs saddlebags and a 40 litre rear/backpack style bag. The PCX has a nice back box, and I have Givi soft saddlebags from my Burgman, along with a 40 litre waterproof Givi bag. I used to tow a trailer which I still have for my Victory Cross Country Tour, but that set up with a sidecar would be an immense footprint, not to mention horrible mpg. I've been in touch with the dealer I purchased our Genuine 50cc scooters from, and upon my return from visiting my son and daughter in law at Fort Rucker in Southern Alabama, I'm going to start comparing the various 300 GTS models available or simply order one in the color I want. As much as the Burgman is a superb touring bike, I really don't tour any more, and when I do, my KLR is set up and ready to go, once I fix the starting problem. Great video, Scooter in the sticks and yourself have done nothing to deter me getting one of these. I'm fifty four with one replaced knee so going slow on a peace of art suits me just fine. Only negative I saw was the lack of bourbon and a good cigar, and maybe my dog. I just wished they didnt have so many cool colors. Thanks again for the video.

      @flatgrindrides  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you got a top box, you'd have plenty of room in the pet-carrier under the seat for your dog! ;-) It is definitely a different experience and mindset than riding a "big" bike, but very rewarding, especially if you are wanting to relax and take it easy. I'm in my 50's too, and sometimes slower (or even just lighter) is better.

    One small question is the gas container not exposed to lots if heat under seat?
    Enjoy and thanks

    • @flatgrindrides
      @flatgrindrides  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s an interesting question. There is obviously a good amount of heat from the engine under the seat. I don’t think it’s enough to pose a risk with the gas canister, but I can’t say for sure. I’m not sure that it’s any hotter under the seat than it is in my motorcycle panniers out in the sun, or even in the trunk of a car. It would be interesting to put a thermometer in there and actually see how hot it gets.

    • @flatgrindrides
      @flatgrindrides  ปีที่แล้ว

      I just did a quick Internet search and it looks like European standard for camping gas canisters is that they be constructed not to leak at temperatures up to 70°C which is 158°F. So I would think this could actually be a concern. Car interiors can get that hot in the summer’s here. I think I’m going to put a thermometer in the under seat compartment and see how high the temperature gets. In the meantime I will put my campaign gas in an external bag. Thanks for thinking about that! Clearly I did not.

  • @ScooterwolfsMotovlog
    @ScooterwolfsMotovlog ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice set up if you can fit all of your gear under the seat. Great looking footage! Looks like a good camping site. As long as it doesn’t rain the near by creek shouldn’t be a problem.
    Your sleeping bag looked small and compact. How comfortable was it? Looks like you called it, the rain did come. Really like your Timelapse. Did you have it shoot all night?

    • @flatgrindrides
      @flatgrindrides  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. The sleeping bag is an REI Sleep Sac that is rated to 55 degrees, so it is very light and compact. I’m a warm sleeper and I find that I’m usually comfortable with less insulation than most. Yes, the overnight Timelapse ran all night long, from just before sunset to sunrise. I used a GoPro plugged into a little portable battery pack with the exposure set to a 30 second shutter and an auto interval, if my memory serves.

    • @flatgrindrides
      @flatgrindrides  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One more thing about comfort: That tent is obviously really small, and that was just the second time I had used it. It didn’t breathe/vent very well and there was a lot of condensation on the inside by morning. There were two lines, one on each end, that I didn’t stake out when I pitched it. Next time I will be sure to use them to see if it vents better. I didn’t get cold, but inside the tent got too humid by morning.

    • @ScooterwolfsMotovlog
      @ScooterwolfsMotovlog ปีที่แล้ว

      @@flatgrindrides I can see that. The real test is how it holds up with rain or wind. Any thoughts of getting a top case to hold more gear if you want to go on a longer trip?

    • @ScooterwolfsMotovlog
      @ScooterwolfsMotovlog ปีที่แล้ว

      @@flatgrindrides that makes sense. I was wondering how your battery was holding out for so many hours? I have an old school sleeping bag. It fits in my cargo bag but takes up a lot of space. I may have to upgrade to a smaller one if I want to try camping.

    • @flatgrindrides
      @flatgrindrides  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ScooterwolfsMotovlog It’s done well and rain and wind. The first time I used it was in South Dakota, and we had a pretty good storm come through. As for the top case, I’m not a big fan, so I would probably be more likely to start with a rack and just toss a bag on.

      I think it would’ve probably been fine. I may do that next time. I didn’t really mind leaving it in the parking lot, as it was quite close, but there is still some risk of theft with a bike that small and light. It would be a real bummer to wake up in the morning, unzip your tent, and find your bike gone!
