In a world where video essays are getting longer and longer (which is fine!), I find your form in this video concise in the best way. Sometimes I don't want to sit down for a 2 hour+ sit, and you said way more in 15 minutes than a lot can in that space. That, is craftsmanship. Top tier as usual Mr. The Sage.

Anime Abandon is now considered "video essays"?
That explains the analytics, with how he used to do them which is missed and why they hardly have the same..."style"

As much as I love bombastic animation, I also love animation that takes its time to breathe, letting the audience soak in the atmosphere, that’s pure vibes. I feel like we don’t get as much of that type of slower pace these days, I think because maybe some higher-ups are afraid of boring the audience or something.

I do think Korean anime has been making a big scene here recently. The past few seasons it seems like more and more of the popular shows coming out are based on Korean manwha. So if it keeps getting more popular who knows maybe re-releases of older shows could be in the cards in a few years.

a monster calls has fast become one of my favourite films, albeit one that absolutely destroyed me emotionally the first time i saw it, the 'i want it to be over' line/scene near the end gut punched me emotionally in a way i dont think i'd ever experienced before

Korean animation has come a long way from being know for mainly knockoffs of japanese anime, mainly mecha. But now, there are some well respected korean studios like Studio Mir, which gave us the Legend of Korra & Voltron: Legendary Defenders. And they are also working on an upcoming Devil May Cry show for Netflix. I'm really looking to that, having played all the games & seen the great OVA.

    • @fat1fared

I think Korean animation is actually well placed to make some international releases, particularly given the rapid raise of webcomics which is not upending Korean dramas but even Japanese mangas in Asia.

If there is a Korean BluRay they frequently have English options and it's the same region code as North America in BluRay so Korean discs just work.

It's only a matter of time till this movie gets a release. I mean if Cyber City Oedo, Violence Jack, Angel Cop and the MazinKaiser OVA (hope you'll cover that when the Blu-Ray drops) can get a rerelease they sky's the limit.

Another melancholy look at a good movie possibly lost to the ages. At least we get the chance to learn about them and hopefully encourage a re-release one day. We had Cyber City Oedo back, for Vash's sake!

I really enjoyed this directors other movie Yobi the Five Tailed Fox. He does a really good job portraying childhood adventures although the endings are very bitter sweet. Unfortunately Yobi was only on Netflix for a short while back in the early 2010s and Mari only saw this DVD release, so this director was never really able to gain traction or explore his full potential. I think the only other movie I know he made was a Frozen clone which kind of shows where things were in the mid 2010s with Frozen mania. I hope South Korea eventually gets a break when it comes to their animation industry because they're getting left behind pretty badly.
China's animation is starting to become more mainstream though but there are some pretty well made animated movies that get overlooked as well. Deep Sea is a Chinese movie from last year from a director similar to this one and I feel very sorry that he and his team spent 7 years on that movie, genuinely making one of the most impressively animated movies to date IMO, only for it to be treated so poorly outside of China.
Honestly we need to stop looking to just American and Japanese animation for great animated works because there's so many other great studios and animations teams from around the world that are making great movies and shows as well.

Speaking of OOP, I still wonder if Bennett has his library documented in some way. I've been hanging onto an OOP Central Park Media boxset of Descendants of Darkness.
Bennett would definitely be able to appreciate it, I've just been letting it gather dust along with other stuff I'm saying goodbye to (like 2001 Fruits Basket discs that would probably be fixable, but that reduces their value anyway). But if he already has it, then I have plans anyway to enrich my library otherwise

I've have seen a couple of Korean animated movies along with some Chinese ones too. They are and can be just as good and amazing as Japanese animation. Honestly you have a lot more to Asian animation then just the ones from solely from Japan.

I can understand why this movie is compared to Studio Ghibli. The plot and the title makes me think of "When Marnie was There" or even "The Boy and the Heron". Another movie you could have mentioned is "I Kill Giants" that's also based on a comicbook.

Wow, my hopes that "Rosario + Vampire" getting an anime remake that follows both seasons of the manga to the letter are low; but the odds of this movie getting the re-release it deserves are even worse than that. Which, I can not stress enough as being incredibly sad.

really is great to see other country's outside of japan who for years were back ground animators or stuck making rip offs are finally trying to compete with japan. this can also be seen with anime like Ling Long while much of the anime that goes are on season after tend to be bad there are things i seen that i would say are extremely good.. weirdly when chinese anime are allowed to actually show relationships they are better with romance made by japan. i seen thousands of romance anime and the amount of japenese romance anime that shows relationships i count on two hands. it sad that china in the past few years are quickly beating japan in romance anime that they been releasing decades. so it is nice to see china breath life into a genre that i want to love so much but have been disappointing me for so long. while it true these country's are still releasing plenty of stuff that are just horrible but they are also releasing stuff that are very unique and are bringing something great to anime.

I do find it interesting that adaptations of Korean manhwa are by Japanese companies, though parts of them were probably animated in Korea. Regardless, I would love to see Korean animation get to a point where it’s just as popular as K-pop or K-Dramas. As far this, I would like to see it, though I see why you used the subbed version, but maybe it can get a re-release or pop up on streaming,

Am I misremembering or did Bennett ever review Descendants of DArkness? It feels like something he might look into, it's also a Central Park Media release originally, now Discotek Media since 2015. Haven't watched it since the 2000s along with stuff like Samurai 7 and Grenadier (neither of which Bennett's reviewed either, but I can dream)

Shame I missed my opportunity to catch it though unless I watch it Any Way I Can, but one can always hope someone in the Korean animation industry owes someone high up a favor and can be convinced to re-release it... hopefully to a more receptive audience this time around.

0:53 obligatory cultural note that you won't find in articles who write about kpop but put BTS on the image (BTS aren't kpop, they are BTSpop. They are Korean artists. Their success is theirs alone and it is unconnected to the kpop industry that hated and sabotaged them all their career.): kpop is NOT POPULAR in Korea, it NEVER was. The average Korean adult considers kpop manufactured kidzbop only listened by the under 25s. BTS is the one exception, having gp fans of all ages outside of the kpop bubble. Kpop in Korea isnt Taylor Swift, it is Disney Channel Originals
